Doublethink

Quoth Matthew Cerrone:
"Interestingly, during tonight’s Hot Stove show on the MLB Network, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said, while Omar Minaya prefers Oliver Perez to Lowe, some in the team’s front-office prefer Lowe, because he is a ground-ball pitcher – this is important because when David Wright and others took batting practice in Citi Field last September, the new stadium played as a hitter’s park."

Call me a conspiracy theorist

but do you think maybe, just maybe Omar prefers Ollie cause he traded for him when his stock was low, and he would love to see him flourish as a Met in the upcoming years? Like, as a way to sort of further boost his image as a GM (i.e. “I took this guy off the scrap heap and now look at him – he’s earning 4 years, $48 million!”)

I think Omar is a smart guy, so I doubt this is the case.

Call me a conspiracy theorist

But doesn’t it make more sense for Omar to say publicly that he prefers Perez if he wants to get Lowe at a better price. It’s all part of being a GM, you don’t say what you’re thinking in an open market. (Obvious response: Omar is not that smart. Auto-Response to the latter: I disagree)

True

General Manager game theory? Or something.

Then Luis Castillo took batting practice

and said he felt that it played as a pitcher’s park

SamT

Not that I’m doubting the veracity of what you wrote, but after taking a look at the construction images of Citi Field on MLB.com’s web site, both Construction 1 and Construction 2 phase photos don’t even have the ground prepared for the laying of grass / sod.

Where exactly did he take batting practice from? How did they set up the pitching? Obviously he didn’t need a perfect field to perform batting practice, but after taking a look at those photos, I just wonder how much credence can be given to what kind of hitting took place.

Thanks.

Don't ask me

Ask Jon Heyman. It doesn’t make sense to me, either.

Whoops...

Yeah, I should have been questioning his statement, not necessarily yours. Sorry about that bud.

Was it not clear

that the quote came from someone else, and not Sam?

by Eric Simon on Jan 9, 2009 9:12 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's clear.

My initial reaction was to question SamT, however, careful review of the post shows clearly that SamT was writing about what Matthew Cerone “quoted” Jon Heyman as saying.

I guess I got a little confused after the “dash”. (See below). I was under the impression that the quote had ended and it was SamT speaking. I assumed those were SamT’s words. I was incorrect.

“…– this is important because when David Wright and others took batting practice in Citi Field last September…”

Side note.

Damn Eric! I didn’t know you were “The Man”. I was just reading the “About” portion of SB Nation and discovered that little morsel. Now I understand this unsavoryness (if you will) about “clutch” hitters…Or the lack thereof.

I don't think I get the MLB Network

I’ll have to settle for the nightly 90 minutes of highlights on ESPN, instead of eight hours.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
