Figgins isn't the only key Angels player likely to leave as a free agent, as right-hander John Lackey's price tag figures to be too much for their taste. The Rangers and Mets are expected to make serious bids.

How about
signing Figgins, giving away Castillo to some ‘smart’ GM who values his grission and use the money to patch some holes?

Figgins will cost more than Castillo, even if we could trade Luis without paying some of his contract.
We certainly won’t be saving any money to fill holes that way, just reducing our budget money to upgrade one of the few non-problematic positions we had this year.

I'd argue Castillo was a problem to a degree
His defense at 2B was miserable this year, if we could unload him I’d do it in a heartbeat.
For the good of Mike Pelfrey’s sanity we should try to dump Castillo while its seems possible. Its not a huge priority IMO, but if the opportunity presented itself I would hesitate to trade him.

I'm not saying we couldn't improve there
I just think the money should be used on Left, 1st, and a good starter. Swapping Figgins for Castillo will probably use a good chunk of our budget.

Where Figgins has a career 6.5 UZR/150 at 3b,
His career UZR/150 at 2nd is -8.5. He’d lose quite a bit of his WAR value at 2nd. Assuming that he’s worth 3 WAR, which is fairly close to his career norms, he’d only be worth 1.5 wins over Castillo. Figgins will likely cost 9 million per season, which is on top of any of Castillo’s contract we have to eat (likely at least 2-3 millon). There’s much better ways to spend that money.

No way
We couldn’t find a GM who wouldn’t force us to eat enough of his contract to make it worth it

Better this than signing Marquis to a 3 year 36 mil contract.

if minaya couldn’t realize we needed a #2 starter last year, i have no doubt we’ll end up with a couple of lofty contracts to guys like marquis, piniero, maybe even bring back tim redding and livan for another go.

signing my dog would be better than signing Marquis
my dog would make a good baserunner

Depends on the breed.
Dachshunds would be too slow, and retrievers would constantly get thrown out because they’d chase the ball. A greyhound or whippet, though, would be an excellent baserunner.

I have a dane/greyhound mix...
But she likes to give high fives and looks happy running around. We cant be having more players in the Reyes mold.

Yes but Daschunds are very small and crafty
Therefore they must be loaded with grission :)

They're tough, too.
Originally bred to fight badgers. That’s got to be worth plenty of grission.
