Perception vs. Reality: Mets' Stats In Games I Attended

I attended seven Mets games this season, six at Citi Field and one at Nationals Park, resulting in a 4-3 record.  Without looking at numbers and going with my gut, I felt like the following Mets played well during these games:

I felt like the following Mets played poorly:

I decided to do some data entry and find out the Mets' stats during these seven games. Here are the top four and bottom four hitters, minimum eight plate appearances (PA):

Player PA OPS
Cory Sullivan 15 1.200
Alex Cora 8 1.071
Angel Pagan 23 1.058
Daniel Murphy 20 1.000

Player PA OPS
David Wright 24 .482
Fernando Tatis 11 .382
Jeff Francoeur 16 .259
Carlos Beltran 8 .250

My perception was right about Sullivan, Pagan, and Francoeur but wrong about Cora, Wright and Murphy.  Here's the same exercise but for pitchers (minimum three IP):

Player IP K BB ERA
Johan Santana 7 7 0 0.00
Ken Takahashi 3.1 2 4 0.00
Tim Redding 3.2 2 1 0.00
Mike Pelfrey 8 5 1 1.13

Player IP K BB ERA
Oliver Perez 5 7 5 3.60
Bobby Parnell 15 12 8 4.20
Brian Stokes 4 3 3 6.75
John Maine 4 1 2 15.75

My perception about both Johan and Parnell was correct, but individual pitching performances are more easily recalled.

Is there a point to this?  Not really, except to distract myself from the awful NLCS matchup. Maybe this shows (anecdotally) that we shouldn't entirely rely on just our eyes and memory when evaluating players. Those pesky numbers can help too.

so basically

you’re just saying you want baseball games to be played by computers. Nerd.

Oh absolutely, it's a noble movement

Anything to shorten games and finally remove the “human element” from the game once and for all. They could still sell tickets to stadiums though and have giveaway nights – TI-89 graph calculator giveaway day and Microsoft Office appreciation day come to mind. Maybe a light show or fireworks display could substitute for what was formerly humans playing “baseball.” Or the players could be cut up into little tiny pieces and float above the spectators like Mike TV did in Willy Wonka. Any alternative to “actually watching the games” is welcome.

I can't use a simple calculator anymore

those things are the shit. Actually, come to think of it, because of that calculator, I can barely add anymore since I used to use it s much.

the 86 is a nice compromise

not quite the powerhouse of the 89, but way more useful features than the 83.

How about the Ti-92

This thing is like nerd awesome

imagine if it could connect to the interwebs

I love my TI-83

Though now that I’m done with Calc, and being a liberal arts major, I don’t see me using it much anymore.

I loved Calc 1 and 2 but hated Calc 3

Probably because I loved my professor for 1 and 2, but then got a different guy for 3 and had no clue what he was saying about anything.

I've never been a math person

but I still use my TI-83 on occassion, though less since I figured out how to do math stuff on Excel. And 99.9% of the time I use it, it’s for sports related stuff. If they used sports to teach math in schools, I’d probably be a mathematician right now.

How awesome would a sabermetrics course be in college?

You have to take useless shit anyway, why not give some people something will actually be interested in?

I think they might be offered at some places.

But I’m not sure.

Jesus, you guys are nerds.

These things make my cellphone look puny by comparison. I don’t remember calculators looking like that when I had to use them in high school.

How else would one calculate one's sabermetrics on the weekends?

After all, us baseball nerds wouldn’t be out playing it or anything, haha

If you had gone to every game in person and had maintained your 4-3 W/L ratio,

we would have finished with something close to 90 wins.

It’s all your fault.

Introducing Buddy Alderson, Sandy's dog, and the newest member of Puppy Avenue!

Embiggen here.
Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
