Morning Quiz: Mets Seasonal Batting Average Leaders
Using the awesome site Sporcle, I made this quiz which asks you to name the last 25 batting average leaders for the Mets. I used a minimum of 300 plate appearances as the benchmark to make it more interesting.
No prizes for getting all of them, but post your score in the comments if you like. This might be a fun feature on slow days this offseason.
(thanks to Red Reporter for the idea)

Great quiz
I got 13/25, completely hamstrung by the early to mid 90s and the early 00s.

19 / 25 Good Stuff
Also made me realize I can’t spell Wigginton or Tueful’s name correctly.

16/25
Though it was more like 21 because I misspelled Teufel, Magadan and Alfonzo (though I am sure I tried multiple times on the latter two). The funniest one was lucking out on MIller – I randomly just typed the name, and sure enough – the 1992 champion at a whopping .285. Those were some pathetic leaders (in terms of average) in the early 90s.

ya i had the same issue
Also missed on how the heck to spell Henderson’s first name for some reason too.
If i count the ones I thought of and couldn’t spell I had 17

Forget Miller, Rickey, and DESI RELAFORD? Holy crap, that year sucked.

and I’m really, really pissed I missed Lance Johnson. I though I had already tried Wigginton, so I spent about 3 minutes typing out everyone else I could remember from that ’04 team, before I tried him again and he showed up – and friggin Desi Relaford.

I typed in Johnson
Thinking HoJo. Got both of them for it.

totally blanked on HoJo too
should have gotten both of them. Damn. I spent too long on the modern teams, I quickly scrambled to do the 80’s and early 90’s at the end.

I thought Hundley might’ve lead one year, but that year was Bonilla

Another one I guessed right
Shocked that he had such a high average, but then we sometimes forget that Bonilla was actually pretty good. He just came in with such a bad attitude and underperformed in his first year that it really affected his entire stay here (plus the team was so bad), but he really wasn’t bad at all.
by dcmetsfan on Oct 16, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
we have some perception that Bonilla was bad
and Bonilla was 10.2 WAR from 1992-1995…-1.5 in 1999 though

1999 was woeful
He was good in his first go round, but man was he awful in 1999. Still, all around, definitely one of the few productive guys from the early 90s teams.
by dcmetsfan on Oct 16, 2009 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think it's that he got the biggest contract in MLB history
and while good, never lived up to that (especially considering what the other big hitter from the Pirates went on to do), plus he had a reputation as being pretty surly.

Here's a tough one
http://www.sporcle.com/games/pancakes188/nymets_lineups
It’s asking for every Mets lineup from 1990-2009 (I think it’s basing it on most games played or most at-bats, it’s not opening day rosters….a little confusing b/c some guys got traded to or from mid-season)

That one was tough
especially the early 90’s, I was too young to remember that. I did manage to get every team completely back to 1998 tough, I’m happy with that.

Ditto on the early 90s
Plus I totally blocked out Roberto Alomar and Roger Cedeno.
You really remembered Jeff Duncan?

I missed Xavier Nady
I kept thinking of the playoff roster or guys who were hurt, totally blanked on him b/c he was traded. And I missed a few guys from ‘03 and ’04. I was also surprised that Charlie O’Brien was never the starting catcher – he used to be one of my favorite players for some reason.

Good one
Got about 150/180. There are a couple of names I am kicking myself for forgetting – Boston, Thompson, Huskey. I mean, how can you forget a guy whose name is Butch Huskey?
And for the life of me I don’t even remember who Danny Garcia was.
by dcmetsfan on Oct 16, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I actually got him haha
he was a skinny 2b. I only remember him b/c the year he was on the team was the only time I made it through a 162 game season plus playoffs in a baseball video game w/o simming. You tend to learn the players names that way

Yeah wasn't he a kind of
slappy singles hitter?
by deadspy3 on Oct 16, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
2003: .214/.274/.357 (he had 12 hits, 2 were doubles, 2 were homers)
2004: .232/.371/.362 (11 of his 32 hits were XBH, he got hit 9 times, which is why his OBP is high)
.278 wOBA in 2003, .335 in 2004, -.1 WAR in 2003, .8 WAR in 2004
That is all you will ever want to know about Danny Garcia

Got 99
Could have had 100, but I didn’t even bother trying to spell Mientkiewicz. Also, somehow forgot Alfonzo, even though I had just taken the other quiz and got him.
by yellomellojello on Oct 16, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I cheated and googled Mientkiewicz
I figure, if I can remember the name and just can’t spell it, it’s not really cheating

I got 126
I cheated a little cause I read the comments here first so I knew to put in Boston, Duncan and Garcia. I freakin forgot Rey Ordonez, I guess I blocked his crappy hitting out of my mind completely.

Phenomenally entertaining – almost every one I missed cracked me up, from Tim Bogar to “Nobody Beans the Viz” Vizcaino. Funny how much easier it is name all the guys from the good teams. Somebody make more of these quizzes…

Dave Magadan instead of the way I kept on insisting Magidan I would have done a whole lot better.
Some great names here though: Keith Miller, Jason Phillips, Desi Relaford.

On a totally unrelated note
as terrible as this season has been, it will totally be worth it if it turns out Chase Utley developed Knoblauchitis in this postseason that will ruin his career within 3 years
