almost there
just a few more days of this

At least we're not playing florida in the last series!
Remember how happy we were for that 6 months ago.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
not to worry....
were we to be in contention at this point, we would have been 3 up with 3 to play, and the following would have happened
Wandy = 3 hit shutout
Oswalt = no hitter, and the Mets would have given him the pitcher’s plate to mark the ocassion.
LaTroy Hawkins would then have made an emergency start and pitched 6 strong, while Ollie never got out of the first inning.
Who in their right mind would sign up for fantasy camp with THIS crew ?
Personally, I don’t need any surgeries, thank you.
are you kidding
playing in fantasy camp next to these guys… you’ll look like a pro! They might sign you

I have 3 worn out lumbar discs and 2 more that are bulging,
I also have a cranky left hip.
I guess I fit right in, but I would have to be day-to-day
i've just got a bad knee and ankle
id be an all star for them

you can't be worse than Ollie

You guys see Jerry's comment about Francoeur today?
“Jerry Manuel told reporters that acquiring Jeff Francoeur may be the best thing to happen to the Mets this season.” — from Metsblog
I know it’s been a rough year, but that can’t possibly be true, can it?
There had to be a top-notch hot dog vendor or a new bat boy with promise they brought in right?
well in all fairness that really does sum up our season
by KeithsMoustache on Oct 2, 2009 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions
It's not so much Francoeur himself
as the fact that the organization feels it solved so many of its problems with this thoroughly mediocre grit machine. They really think they got a steal in this guy.
by Bieser's Balk on Oct 2, 2009 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions
no way...
a good ole boy like Francoeur would learn a wimpy language like French. Francoeur is way too masculine for that. Professor Reyes? Sure. But not the former football stud.

its probably one of the worst things to happen to the mets this season
one of the worst players in baseball is now on the mets
i think he's gonna be like the reverse nolan ryan.

Hey what do you guys think about the Mets maybe pursuing Micah Owings as a bottom of the rotation guy / bat off the bench.
i dunno, he's not exactly a reliable pitcher
he’d be an OK pinch hitter, but do we really need a Matt Stairs type who’s only good for pinch hitting?
by KeithsMoustache on Oct 2, 2009 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions
1) who isnt better than ollie
2) cringe
by KeithsMoustache on Oct 2, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions
No.
I’d rather have a roster spot for a bench guy taken up by someone who can play multiple positions, such as Felipe Lopez. I think he can play every position except center, catcher and pitcher.
And he’s a free agent…
by MetsFan4Decades on Oct 2, 2009 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions
owings could be a pitcher and a batter
how much value does he had (while pitching) as a hitter compared to the average hitter?
IDK
but how many guys do we have already who are #5 t ype pitchers?
by MetsFan4Decades on Oct 2, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions
depends, i think a few are FA at the end of season
so we could always let someone go, but i dont trust him even as a 5.
by KeithsMoustache on Oct 2, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions
nice swing
where were these at bats all season… the last few games he’s started to look a bit more alive again

i just watch a lot of movies though. I think i keep blockbuster open around here singlehandedly

my son does the same.
in fact, just minutes ago he was on his way out the door to Blockbuster and his mom reminded him that there are still 2 movies he hasn’t seen.
haha, getting a bit ahead of himself
i’ve slowed down a bit at this point because there just arent many good movies coming out anymore these days.

I never saw the Natural
But have seen Field of Dreams and Bull Durham plenty of times too. And I’m 6 years younger than you

you'd tear your rotator cuff

it's always been terrible....it's just that now we know what is going to happen.
Palmer decided to go work for Allstate, and boom !

2-4 were bleh and the last two were cringe worthy

we need to get football sabermetrics in the mainstream
there are some football sabermetric websites that i know of but i haven’t had much time to read a lot of it. the football analysis now is just heart, guts, and personal opinion. i read on footballoutsiders.com that the moves jim zorn did were actually good statistically, even though everyone thinks he’s an idiot. football sabermetrics aren’t as advanced as baseball and it is a lot harder (with an almost limitless amount of game states and there being more players interacting at once), but it would be interesting to know what’s actually happening.
Disagree completely
Sabermetrics is one of the reason I’ve come to love baseball so much more than other sports. Though I still love football.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
I think his point was that it's OK to measure, but at some point it also has to be more than number crunching.
agreed, i just get frustrated when somebody says something totally incorrect
then when presented with the numbers attacks sabermetrics.
by KeithsMoustache on Oct 2, 2009 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah, I've said some things that were incorrect, but I can always shut up when someone presents real data.
although I don’t really buy all of the SABR data, I can see where it has a lot of value for a GM.
i'll agree stats like UZR need work
but they’re decent starting points for a conversation usually
by KeithsMoustache on Oct 2, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions
UZR
is still the best we have available. We know your eyes deceive you and errors are useless on their own.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
oh im in no way saying UZR is not a useful stat
but its in its infancy.. they need to work out the algorithms a bit better still, but I advocate its use… just take it with a grain of salt
by KeithsMoustache on Oct 2, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions
I get what you're saying
That’s one of the reason they say 3 years of defensive data is equal to 1 of hitting.
I can’t wait until the stadiums have that system from the NYTimes article earlier this year.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
yeah....I just don't see blind reliance on pure numbers.
because players are people, not machines.
numbers help you make decisions, but can’t be everything.
the grission factor for each playler=1000

"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
Football sabermetrics??
Egh.
I’m a sabermetrics guy, but I don’t need them to tell me Jim Zorn is a shitty head coach
What sites?
I’d love to read about it because even though I don’t know any of it, I have a feeling it backs up my theory that just because wide receiver A has 12 touchdowns and wide receiver B has 8, doesn’t automatically make A better, like so many think.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
i basically google searched football sabermetrics
and i got two good ones:
footballoutsiders.com
advancednflstats.com
yea imagine we still had livan too

Redding has probably earned a shot at the 5 spot
this second half he’s been pretty solid
by KeithsMoustache on Oct 2, 2009 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions
and we may or may not have nieve, niece, and figgy as well
at least one of them should pan out to a serviceable bottom half of the rotation pitcher
by KeithsMoustache on Oct 2, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Santana, Lackey, Pel, Perez (stuck with him), Redding.
Is a serviceable staff.
depends on how he comes back from that nasty hamstring tear

that would be glorious
but will never happen
by KeithsMoustache on Oct 2, 2009 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions
In what universe is Marquis a number two starter?
Wolf and Garland are both better than Marquis
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
well that lineup has a #1 and then 4 #3/#4 pitchers
there isnt really a 2 per se, but it balances out pretty well
by KeithsMoustache on Oct 2, 2009 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions
I really don't want Halladay for the prospects he'll cost
and I’d rather pay Holliday over Lackey
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
right now we have:
santana, pelf, main, perez, neise, redding, figgy, nieve
we need 1 or 2 more starters. we should take the best deals on the f.a market to not waste money. i would hope for pinero and wolf (lackey would probably be too expensive if we are also adressing corner OF, 1B, and catcher)
well for a little while he was pausing at the top of his leg kick
and when he did that, he would pitch with much better control, but then he just stoped doing it and started throwing across his body again.
by KeithsMoustache on Oct 2, 2009 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm no pro, but I did teach both my kids to pitch thru HS level, and what I see is that regardless of motion, he's just not a baseball person, period.
he has no baseball DNA.
probably had a poster of Valenzuela when he was young, and some idiot scout saw him throw hard and “bingo”. instant ball player.
add to that, the fact that Jerry is the manager, and it’s a recipe for disaster.
What did Livan do?
I missed something…

Once again
I’m entertaining myself reading the whining on the Philly blogs.
They clinched Wed, they lost yesterday, their losing now.
They’ve got no BP, no reliable SP and a very anemic offense right now.
Go Rockies! Go Dodgers!
One plus on this season almost over
we don’t have to see that ugly inaugural patch next year on the unis – right?
Hopefully
it will be looking at him from the rear view mirror – as he’s leaving….

Period.
There isn’t another decent option for RF, and it really wouldn’t be THAT bad to see if this is even close to real next year.
beggers can't be choosers
even saber-beggars.
is he ideal? No, but where do we get off expecting the ideal?

sure, but you could say that about every single component of this team. The damn bullpen catchers probably suck
do you have a gm or management team capable of figuring that out?

sure why not, he's an affordable option
and he looks like a calculated risk at this point instead of a wild risk

Pagan is good to give Beltran breathers every week, preferably around an off day so Voltron can have 2 days off in a row.

i kind of wonder about you guys who think evans is some kind of real deal just cuz jerry doesn’t play him. Jerry might not know what he’s doing, but its a logical fallacy to arrive at the conclusion that evans is a major league quality player who deserves more playing time because of that.
I think the evans luv is a result of fans being under extreme duress. more likely its just reshuffling the deck chairs on the titanic.

Did you all read where they’re contemplating making him a catcher? Heard that yesterday.
I can’t figure out if they’re doing that b/c he really doesn’t have a position right now and that would be a way to get his bat in the lineup or…
They’re trying to increase his trade value.

Phillies fans – who are losing yet again tonight:
- Our bullpen sucks. They can’t get anybody out.
- Bullpen is totally unreliable. Phils are done in the first round.
- We are lucky the Phils managed to string together two victories against the lowly Astros otherwise I am convinced we would of certainly collapsed like 1964
- Sorry but everyone who thinks they are repeating are nuts. They are not good enough this year. Now we will lose all of home adv. This is a horrible division this year. Lucky we play in it.
Done and out in the first round. Gives me a reason to watch and enjoy the post season.
Now if the Yankees can only tank as well, I’ll enjoy post season playoffs.
