Around SBN: The Worst Team Ever Projected?

What is it going to take?

When will the Mets learn?

Star-divide

I have been a Mets fan my entire life. I can remember back to the heady days of the last true Amazin' Mets team. This is a team who truely is in not only a World Series Championship drought, but a complete drought of talent. Sure we have Reyes,Wright, KRod and Johan, but it takes a lot more then that to win a division, let alone get to the big show in October and win it too.

Beltran,Delgado have both put up mediocre numbers since coming to Flushing, and thier frequent trips to the DL, one wonders how much more they have in thier tanks. The Mets essentially gave up on Pedro and what is he doing now? Going to the World Series with rival Philidelphia. The only plus was getting Billy Wagner off the shelf and moving him to Boston, but since Boston pulled a "one and out", Wagner is talking retirement. Makes you wonder if he's going to follow through or Brett Farve it, and change his mind in December and decide to make a comeback.

What was with trading Ryan Church to the Braves? and for Jeff Francouer? Only time will tell who got the better end of that deal.

Looking to the future, If Matt Halladay is within reach, GRAB HIM!!! The Mets need another solid bat in the line-up, and with the 4 Horsemen coming back next year, that being Reyes,Wright,KROD and Johan, and the free agent market, lets all hope that Omar earns his paycheck.

On a sidenote, If the Mets are looking to give Manuel the boot, I'll take the job for FAR LESS then you were paying him. Sure I've never managed anything but a Fantasy League team, but I won my League in my first year. Just food for thought.

Maybe we can trade carlos Reyes and Jose Beltran for them.

That would be a huge grission upgrade.

by Evan_S on Oct 24, 2009 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I stand corrected

He’s been the second best since 06

Beltran: 2006: 7.0 WAR, 2007: 4.9 WAR, 2008: 6.7 WAR, 2009: 2.9 WAR Total: 21.5 WAR
Sizemore: 2006: 7.5 WAR, 2007 5.8 WAR, 2008: 6.3 WAR, 2009: 2.2, Total: 21.8 WAR

And he’d have been the best if he didn’t get injured this year. I discounted 05 cause of Beltran was hurt/sucked, so if you look at 05 Sizemore had 5.3 WAR to Beltran’s 1.9.

Matt Halladay

is that like this generation’s Babe Ruth? Great pitcher AND great hitter? I’ll take him.

Also, you’re not gonna make many friends around here saying Beltran has put up mediocre numbers. You might wanna try PhillipsAvenue.com instead – also a good site if you’re into crazy interns.

What IS with that chruch for francoeur trade, I feel like we just sort of glossed over that topic around here without any real discussion into the matter. I say hire this guy as Omar’s replacement though, he’s got a keen eye for talent in CF, seeing that Beltran is clearly an overrated hack. And I miss Pedro too, maybe we should also re-sign Al Leiter and Steve Trachsel as well, I’m sure they’re younger than i remember them being and would have pushed us over the top this year.

I'd Take OMAR's Job

and produce before the contract was up. He clearly has an ear for names, but doesn’t have an eye for talent. I wouldn’t have taken ManRam, but I would have chased C.C. or Burnett last season to add an arm to the rotation, knowing that they weren’t getting Pedro back in a Mets uniform this year. Getting KRod was a good idea, if he had some offense to back him up. Reyes and Wright are the only real offensive weapons the Mets have on thier roster spun around a bunch of guys that either couldn’t catch on elsewhere or got a couple years left in thier tank. I’d rather see them bring back Doc one more time and see if he has any of his magic left before i’d concider Trachsel as anything more then a hot dog vendor, and Leiter, HA, you better come up with someone else, why not give Rocket or David Wells one more Farewell Tour?

by squid92 on Oct 24, 2009 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

it apparently causes their WHIP to increase every season they've been in the majors

causes FIP to balloon, and drops your WAR to just above replacement level, and causes your strikeout totals to decline every year since long before you were on the team as well. Its clear closing for the Mets not only made him worse this year, but made him steadily get worse every year before he even played for them until he reached this point. Beware players, if you intend to play for the mets in 5 years, your stats are gonna start dropping right now!

by KeithsMoustache on Oct 24, 2009 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

How does offense help closers?

Did you seriously ask that question, or are you trying to prove how dumb you are. A closer is brought in when the WINNING team has the lead. How many times did the Mets lose because thier lead wasnt strong enough? The closer can only do so much.

by BigJohnInFla on Oct 24, 2009 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

thats if you measure them based on saves

if you look at his body of work in the games he did come in to save it was unimpressive, and thats a generous assessment.

by KeithsMoustache on Oct 24, 2009 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

KROD = DUD?

is that what your saying. That KRod is a bust after one season with the Amazin’s. I don’t think you can really place that tag on him…yet.

And for all of you who think I’m a traitor for bustin down Beltran, talk to the NY tattoo on my right forearm in the Mets colors. When the season is over, and everyone is hanging thier jerseys, hats and necklace/charm combos up til next season, I wear the colors proudly year round. Wanna see a pic of it, I’ll post it tonight

by BigJohnInFla on Oct 24, 2009 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions

im not placing the dud tag on him

but there have been warning signs he’s been steadily declining in ability to consistently get outs for years… its something that they should keep an eye on. And we’re not saying you’re not a mets fan for not liking beltran, we’re saying there is absolutely no evidence to back up your claim that beltran has been medicore since coming to the mets. Its just a nonsensical statement.

by KeithsMoustache on Oct 24, 2009 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Beltran's #'s

I may have misspoke when I said “Since he came to the Mets” when its really only been the last 2 seasons. Delgado too. Injuries abound between them, thier production hasn’t been that great, and doesn’t meet the level of production they showed early on in thier tenure.

by BigJohnInFla on Oct 24, 2009 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

the injuries are rightfully a concern

but in the time they played they put up more than adequate numbers most of the time.

by KeithsMoustache on Oct 24, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Delgado's overall numbers are good,

but his long streaks of white hot and ice cold were frustrating to say the least.

by fxcarden on Oct 24, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

no doubt

i wouldnt have argued the delgado point as much, when he’s hot, he’s ridiculous, and when he’s cold hes terrible, but beltran has been consistent

by KeithsMoustache on Oct 24, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Beltran was a 6.7 WAR player in 2008, and he had a .915 OPS this season.

I hardly see the massive dissappointment, I see one of the top players in baseball looking at those numbers. Some regression from Delgado was clearly expected in the last year of his contract. He was a 2.9 WAR player in 2008, equalling the best of his Mets career. There was no reasonable way to expect those two to miss the amount of time they did. You’re allowing the dissappointment of 2009 to affect how you remember 2008, but the reality is that Delgado was decent in 2008, and Beltran was an elite player.

Frankie was a bad signing because of the money.

He’s declining, no doubt and will have a 17.5 million dollar option going into 2012 unless he gets hurt. The only way he a closer could be worth 17.5 million is if he pitches 85 perfect innings (pretty much) and that is not happening.

"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."

by Evan_S on Oct 24, 2009 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I have a deep, involuntary love for Frankie

and I don’t even know why, maybe it’s the way he throws himself off the mound. But even I can see that he’s iffy. I still like him as my closer, but I’m prepared to see some blown saves.

And as for Beltran, any mets fan who doesn’t thank their stars that they get to watch him play every day is not any kind of real baseball fan, no matter their tattoos. He is one of the great players of his generation, even putting aside the utter beauty and gracefulness of his play.

He does get injured, but I don’t think most fans begin to understand or appreciate how often he plays hurt (and this is REAL grission) and still is the best centeerfielder in baseball.

by SuperT on Oct 24, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I never liked him while he was with the Angels because of that

Since he came to the Mets, though, something’s changed, and I agree. His…flopping off the mound is great.

But the only thing offensive support would affect is the amount of save chances!

When a closer goes out for a save, THERE IS NOTHING THE OFFENSE CAN DO ANYMORE. Jesus, man. It’s never the offense’s fault that a closer blows a lead.

closers are paid to "save" games when there's a one run lead

So, yeah, offense has nothing to do with it.

by firejerrynow on Oct 25, 2009 6:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Come to think of it,

a better offense might actually hurt a closer’s performance. If we’re scoring more runs, there’s probably fewer 1-3 run leads to protect, which means fewer save chances. Which means Frankie finishes fewer games.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Oct 25, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

To a degree, but the Save stat is so horrible that winning a game in which you entered with a 3 run lead is considered a save, I believe. Haha, think about it, X Closer enters the game with a 3 run lead, gets an out, solo HR, out, solo HR, out, and he gets the SAVE!

I wouldn't have taken Manny either...

…but another arm (or two) was essential. With the starting rotation so uncertain adding Putz was a ridiculous move. There’s no way the Mets were ever going to pick up his 8.6 mil option for 2010, so it was always a one year deal. And it was for a setup guy when a 200 inning arm was essential, an arm for which we could used the five chips we spewed on the Putz deal. Ridiculous.

I’m constantly reminded these days that Theo has been in Boston for about the same amount of time that Omar has been in New York.

No, Maybe I won’t make a lot of friends talking trash about Beltran. But I Dont Care. That’s not what I am here for. If you are the experts ( god help us) then, Why don’t you tell the rest of us what is wrong with the Mets?

Is it that the over-paid little leaguers are throwing tantrums and not playing to thier full potential? Is it that they see thier new home, CitiField, being refered to as ShittyField in 5 years when they are still sucking hind-tit to Philidelphia and Atlanta (believe me, there is no worries about Washington and The Marlins, Huizenga doesn’t own the team anymore, so no more bought WS titles out of Miami)

Anyway you look at it, this team has choked every season since 2000 when the BANKEES handed them thier ass, or would you rather look more recently to when Philidelphia spanked them a few years back? Answer this one, WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO BRING THIS TEAM BACK TO THE GLORY OF A WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP??

Why don’t you tell the rest of us what is wrong with the Mets?

Terrible injuries. Bad players playing too often. A shaky starting rotation. That about sums it up…..

Is it that the over-paid little leaguers are throwing tantrums and not playing to thier full potential?

No.

I’ve got Yankee fan and Phillies fan friends of mine who already call it Shitty Field. Also, Josh Beckett and the 2003 Marlins say hi. Also, saying that the Nats will be terrible in 5 years is probably like going back to 2003 and saying the Rays will be terrible in 5 years. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Anyway you look at it, this team has choked every season since 2000 when the BANKEES handed them thier ass, or would you rather look more recently to when Philidelphia spanked them a few years back?

Every year? The 2004 Mets were choke artists?

WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO BRING THIS TEAM BACK TO THE GLORY OF A WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP??

A lineup with good power. A starting rotation with no real weak spots. A tremendous bullpen. That seems to be a common feature of teams like the 2002 Angels, 2005 White Sox, and 2008 Phillies.

There, I’ve answered your questions. Now please never post again.

All Very Good Answers

and i agree with all except the last one, because it’s total bullshit. You gave me exactly what I was looking for, someone who shares the same views as me. Your right on all your points, and 2004, was St Louis and Boston. Mets made it as far as NLDS and went home. The 2000 Series was the last time they got to the Big Show and got sent home as 2nd best.

I would be willing to part with my Pedro and my Wagner signed balls if they make it to the world series in 2010, and my 86 WS Team Ball if they win it.

becuase it didn’t seem like the Mets were in it since Reyes made the DL. It seemed like they were just going through the motions. By the All-Star break, 3 of thier top tier players ( Delgado,Beltran and Reyes) we’re either sparsely playing or on the DL. Yes, the bullpen has been the achilles heel of the team for quite some time. Name one closer for the Mets, other then Wagner or Franco who was worth thier contract? And don’t say Orosco, yes he was good, but in terms of today’s standard, he would have been another mid-level closer. KRod has potential to regain the kind of production he had with the Angels, but he alone will not be the salvation of this team.

It is time for Omar to step up and spend some money on this team. So what if it pushes the payroll over 300mil, with a quality team on the field, the fan’s will fill the house. " If you build it, ( in this case the team) they will come.

by BigJohnInFla on Oct 25, 2009 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

if you take out wagner and franco

the mets have had only 2 other closers in the last couple decades when you take away wagner and franco. Those are benitez, and looper, and nobody is going to say they were great for sure. but just because they were underwhelming doesnt mean k-rod is worth the contract they gave him. He has declined every season in the big leagues, and while i’d love to see him improve, there is nothing to indicate he’ll suddenly get his velocity and control back.

And to argue a team is going through the motions because its players end up on the DL is just silly. Its not like they decided to go on vacation, 2 of the 3 you mentioned ended up having surgery of some sort. I agree expenditures this offseason are vital, but its not because our players just arent trying hard enough. Its because our depth is woefully bad, and we took too many gambles with our pitching rotation.

i don’t think the bullpen specifically is our problem so much as the fact we have to go to it way too early in games. Pitchers rarely made it through the 6th this year, and if you lean that hard on any bullpen it’ll crack a bit.

We need a temporary 1b and a left fielder, add a decent pitcher and we’re in good shape. Its not like we need to buy a whole new team here.

by KeithsMoustache on Oct 25, 2009 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree Again

atleast on the need of a LF and some decent pitching. As for a temp 1B, I believe it’s time to hand Delgado his walker and send him off into the sunset, or perhaps a trade is in order, Carl Crawford would make a good trade, and we could kill 2 birds with one stone if we got Zobrist from the Rays. He’s a good utility man and can play inf or Of positions, not to mention his numbers were decent( h/ab-149/501 R-91 HR-27 RBI-91 SB-17 .297BA)

by BigJohnInFla on Oct 25, 2009 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Zobrist was one of, if not the best position player in baseball this year,

And you want him as a utility man? They aren’t trading Zobrist.

This guy isnt going to spend money like the top 10 teams will, that being LAD,SF,AZ,CO,NYY,PHI,CHISox,Atl and Sea.

These teams will continue to appear in the post season because thier owners are willing to commit money to improving thier teams by getting the talent that will get them to a WS. Wake up and smell whats cooking in the league, there are legit contender-makers out there this off-season, grab some before they’re all gone and your stuck with another losing season.

First and foremost, for someone who pokes fun at othe people's intelligence,

you spelled “thier” wrong, you used “YOUR” when you were supposed to use “you’re.” Sure, it’s nitpicking and I’ve made spelling/grammatical errors myself plenty of times, but not after I’ve touted my superior intelligence.

Now, you’re an idiot. Sorry to be harsh, but you’re an idiot. We don’t have Putz anymore unless we pick up his 8 million dollar option, and we don’t have Delgado, so how exactly are we going to trade them? Also, why would the Rays trade a player still under their control for another two years, I believe, who came off a great year and is still young. Who is going to play second for them next year if not Zobrist? Hell, even if we could trade Delgado and Putz, why would they trade a young star for two fading veterans who will cost four times as much as Zobrist, that goes against your logic of them not spending. Please, shut the fuck up and get the fuck out.

its the fuckin internet

and are any of us getting paid for blogging on this site? No, we’re doing it to exercise our free speech. I could fucking care less about grammar when its on the internet, Professor. I’m sure that you have a phD in Astrophysics, so change your name to hawking.

As for thier trading for better, it was a fucking example. GET IT? when you put together a scenario, in this case, to show what it would take to get the job done, nothing more. The Mets, my beloved Mets, will continue to pack thier lockers at the end of the season and go to the WS as spectators unless something is done by the front office.

Instead of talking shit about one another. How about we get back on task and discuss what we all think the actions of the GM should be. Who should they chase in FA? who should they avoid?

If anyone has anything interesting or intelligent to say on those 2 points, speak, but if your just going to try and run down a first timer, then sit back and shut the fuck up, and let the adults talk.

It may have been an example,

but it was a lousy one. There’s about a million reasons the Rays wouldn’t do a Zobrist for Delgado/Putz trade, and only one they would (hint: it involves temporary insanity). We could post wild, impossible speculative trades and free agent signings, but it would be a stupid and pointless waste of our time. Instead, we should be thinking about realistic ways the Mets can improve this off-season.

BTW, you really should take a look at the Community Guidelines and the Commenting Guidelines. In particular, the parts about not insulting other posters and using proper grammar. Yeah, you can type ‘thier’ all you want, but it just makes you look foolish.

Yes, an 86-76 pythag this year after a 92-70 pythag in 2008 is a real return to the days of Steve Cox and Tanyon Sturtze. Your (sic) aware that the AL East can send, at most, 2 teams to playoffs, so one of the trio of Boston, New York, and Tampa Bay is going to be left out each year, right?

But by all means, give Andrew Friedman a call and see if he’ll deal some of his core players for the Mets flotsam.

Somehow, a chain of events unfolded that put Steve Phillips in a professional broadcast booth Sunday night so he could rip Carlos Beltran. Try to explain that in any other terms.

I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
