Could we get a head count on 2B vs. 3B?

For all of the stories and jokes about 3B, consider this: for the last 2 decades, the position has mostly been manned by: 1) Hojo; 2) Fonzie; 3) Ventura; and 4) Wright. That’s not too shabby in my book. But if you look at 2B, there’s hardly been any long term answers. Some one year wonders, a few platoon players (Boswell, Backman , Teufel). The guys who were there more than a year or two full time? Ron Hunt, Felix Millan and Fonzie while Ventura was at 3B? I wouldn’t be surprised if the total number of 2B rivals or even surpasses the number at 3B.

Only 122 2B

29 seasons with one player seeing over 100 games at second. Quite a bit of crossover with third.

I think it dates back to the beginning

Ron Hunt was the Mets first legit all-star, and he was a 2nd baseman, so that myth never really developed. It’s like Miami still being referred to as Quarterback U, even though they haven’t produced an NFL-caliber QB in nearly 2 decades. But yea, in recent years 3B has been way more solid than 2nd

Yeah, it goes all the way back to 1962.

Zimmer was our Opening Day 3B, and he went something like 0-14 to begin the season. Not long after he got a hit, he got traded. It took us a lot longer to find a decent starting 3B, which is the reason we traded Nolan Ryan and Amos Otis.

yea that's pretty crazy

Yikes!

Even if you cheated on this, there’s a good chance you still wouldn’t get them all right. Way to rethink your Mets IQ, huh?

(Yes, I'm having too much fun with GraphJam)
I'm doing a little study on the NL East and thought I'd share an interesting little tidbit. To all of the self-loathing Mets fans/lazy 'MLB insiders' and journalistic parrots who have 1) Condemned the entire Mets organization as a joke 2) Written off this core's impressive run to date and 3) Deified the Phillies as unstoppable juggernauts w/ no chance to lose this division:

Yes, those wins are weighted towards '06-'07 and yes, the Phillies' are more recent but the fact remains that no other team in that span can even come close to the Mets total of days in first place, which should be garnering a lot more respect than it has. If only because we still have nearly the same core in place that has clearly had a lot of success and health-willing can very easily do so again in 2010.
