Skankees suck! They buy their championships! A-Roid! Their fans are all obnoxious mouth-breathers! Yeah, whatever. Atleast the Yankees don't have Shane Victorino.

Blind adherence to the written rule.

actually I don't even think the rule was followed
The assumption made by the people who argued it was an ok call within the rules was that Reyes didn’t try to get out of the way. I think the video shows that he clearly did peel off. As I said at the time, its not like he has to run to the dugout.

I remember a long discussion thread about this
One person (or more) argued that the umpires had no choice but to call obstruction according to the letter of the rule; many disagreed. I was of the opinion that the umpires failed to interpret the rule in light of the situation, which was that Victorino went out of his way to make contact with Reyes and, as such, the umpire should not have called obstruction in that situation.

me and my friends
used to make the card game “war” more interesting by considering it right and honorable to attempt to cheat but establishing penalties if you get caught.
steroids aside, baseball tacks the other way. even legal stuff like the hidden ball trick isn’t attempted for fear of being considered douchy, and we get really bent out of shape at victorino even though he attempted what he attempted in full view of the umpire.
i’m not sure i really have a point. just an observation.
by letsgocyclones on Oct 26, 2009 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i'm probably talking to myself here
but i should draw a distinction between rule breaking and cheating. rule breaking is the type of illegal action that has a penalty within the context of the game. it’s illegal to swat at a guy’s arm in basketball but we don’t get indignant over fouls.
i think we can say that cheating is the stuff that’s heinous enough to spill outside the context of the game, into suspensions and the like. we’re always indignant over it. corked bats, razor blades in the mitt.
victorino’s infraction was rule breaking — not cheating — but baseball has an intolerance for rule breaking unique to sports. Is there any situation where it would be justified for a player to intentionally perform an illegal action, like fouling a guy hard on a breakaway, or holding to prevent the certainty of a sack?

Is it bush leage if you dive for a flyball, trap it, hop up,
pretend you caught it, and get the call? Then I don’t see why trying to get a call on the basepaths is different. In every sport there are situations where you try to hide certain things from the refs. This is no different. It wasn’t bush league, he just tried to make something happen and it worked.

Is it bush league if a WR gets one foot down, after a catch
can’t drag the other foot, but the ref calls it a catch, and then the offense snaps the next play before it can be challenged? What if a DB tugs on a WR’s jersey to gain an advantage, picks a pass, and brings it to the house. Bush league? Not to me, just a little play that you got away with because the refs/umpires missed it. That A-Rod play was more bush league, yelling in somebody’s ear.

they're both bush league
but running into a player intentionally so that they get called for an infraction is worse than pretending you caught a ball that you didn’t. Just like Flozell Adams tripping defensive lineman is worse than pretending you dragged both feet in bounds.

Phillies all the way
For one, living in New York, I can deal with the celebration if the Phillies win it all since it will be in another city. I can’t deal with the endless abject worship we’ll have to deal with over the next few weeks if the Yankees win it all. Making it worse will be the worship of A-Rod by the same fans and media who wanted his “choker” ass run out of town on a rail for the last 5 years.
And while we can hope that the Mets can take the high ground in the rivalry back from the Phillies some day, it’s a completely different thing with the Yankees. With them, the level of crap spewed by the media and the fans reaches the absurd. “Aura and Mystique”, “True Yankee”. It’s like playing for them is some noble higher calling, instead of a way to make more money than the Royals would pay you. It makes my stomach turn.
So no, I don’t like the Phillies at all, but sometimes you have to get behind something you’re not fond of in order to defeat a greater evil.
Somehow, a chain of events unfolded that put Steve Phillips in a professional broadcast booth Sunday night so he could rip Carlos Beltran. Try to explain that in any other terms.

theoretically
if the rest of the National League really, really sucked, making it to back-to-back World Series wouldn’t be all that impressive. Kinda like when the Nets went to back-to-back NBA Championships, even though if they played in the West they probably would have struggled to be a 6 seed

possibly
although I think the NFC is much closer to the AFC now than the NL is to the AL, and certainly closer than it was 5 or 6 years ago.
And for the record, I’m not necessarily saying the Phillies are overrated, just that it’s theoretically possible. Even championship winning teams can be overrated, in a historical sense.

Phillies are a very good team right now
There I said it. But that doesn’t mean that they don’t have overrated players. it would be hard to have overrated players on a crappy team wouldn’t it? The thing about the Phillies fans is on the one hand they want to say the Mets choked in 2007 and 2008 and on the other hand they like to say that they were this griity hardnosed team that was destined to win once Jimmy Rollins willied it all into being with his “team to beat” guarantee. it can’t be both can it?
Utley and Howard are legitimate superstar players and Rollins is a solid ss and leadoff man. But coming into this season Rollins had not even been as good as Reyes in three of the last four years if you go by WAR. Hammels is a one year wonder unless he proves otherwise. and Victorino really is an slightly above average player (although I admit the Mets would kill to have even a slightly above average player in left or right field).
They are the best team in the NL right now but talk of a dynasty is absurd. They play in a bandbox and the pitching isn’t that good.
You are respectful enough Bye Dawk, i will give you that

I ride the D train home to 145th St, and coincidentally that is the train many people take to Yankee Stadium. Whenever there is an evening home game, I get to ride home with a train full of obnoxious Yankees fans hooting and hollering and generally banging their chains on the ground.

I don't really have that much of a problem with the Yankees
Yes, there is all the cross-town rival stuff, but we only play them 6 times per year. We play the Phillies, Braves, Marlins, and Nationals many more times and we compete with them for a playoff spot (or two). I would “root” for the Yankees in the World Series against any of those teams.

I love baseball, and I’ll watch pretty much any game any time.
But this is too much. Either of these teams winning it all will be so much easier to stomach if I just ignore it completely.
So I’m not rooting for anyone, and I’m just not watching.

Victorino is an ass and we all hate the guy. But the Kay’s Waldman’s Francescas, Malusis’ of the world make it wayyyyyyyy harder to root against the phils. Sweeny Murti talking about how clutch Jeter was today by letting a ball ounce off of him DIRECTLY to cano. Cano is all of a sudden a GGer with his -4.9 UZR.

I guess I don't really listen
to the Kay’s, Waldman’s, Francesa’s, Malusis’s and Murti’s of the world too often. I don’t see why opinions of people like that really matter. We can make our own decisions/judgments about the game; we don’t have to be spoonfed stuff by the MSM.
Yeah, Mike Francesa saying “TRADE DA CORE” is annoying and reason to stop for a second and say “hey he’s stupid and here’s the reason why” but what’s the point in getting worked up over it? Michael Kay talking about Derek Jeter’s intangibles is like nails on a blackboard, but it’s about 1/100 as infuriating as Shane Victorino playing bush league baseball then telling the world that the Mets suck because they celebrate too much.

Problem is you can turn them off, but
then you listen to WINS even when it’s not the sportscast, and you hear idiot Yankee fans (I know it’s redundant) whining when they lose about their 26 titles vs. the one Angels title as if that has anything to do with the game they just lost. And by the way John Montone, the Yankkes didn’t win 39 pennants in the old Yankee Stadium. The first two were in the Polo Grounds.

Point taken
I think I said it last week – the main three reasons to root against the Phils are: Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, and Jayson Stark. Also, I think I’m a bit immune from having to suffer Yankees fans because I don’t live in New York anymore. I’m actually closer to Philly here, and there are more Phillies fans in my office than Yanks fans (one guy is actually a fan of both, and I hate him for that).
The thing about not watching the Series – this has the makings of being a really good World Series. Our hatred of these two teams aside, these are probably the 2 best teams in the sport, and they’re pretty evenly matched. This should be the first Series to go more than 5 games since 2003, and considering the lineups and the bandboxes the teams play in, it’s gonna be entertaining to watch the final scores posted each night..
Also, I don’t think I have it in me to completely skip the World Series, though I did skip most of the 2006 World Series because I just couldn’t stomach it.

I hate the Phillies. I hate the Yankees as well.
I’m not going to have good feelings about the team that won regardless of the outcome. I hate the argument that the AL is a vastly superior level of competition worse than I hate either franchise in this years world series. At least a Phillies win would give the NL 3 out of the last 4 world series and hopefully lead the media to tone down that ridiculous argument. Largely due to that I’m hoping for an extremely poorly pitched series in cold wet weather (so both teams fans get to suffer anxiety attacks while getting the flu), with a Phillies victory to at least stick one to the AL. I also wouldn’t mind a major injury to a yankee starting pitcher, as I feel that would lessen the likelihood that they get invovled with Holliday.

No, it’s not really possible, and possibly irrational, but I don’t care. I despise the vast majority of Yankee fans, and will not tolerate another winter of hearing about how fucking great they are for buying a 27th goddamned World Series. I suppose if you’re not from NY you haven’t seen the stories and headlines about how they’re ‘back where they belong’ and such bullshit. Frankly, I’m hoping for an all-out beanball war which leaves both teams too short-handed to actually finish the series. At minimum, I want Dicktorino to slide hard into 2nd, tearing his own hamstring while and Jeter’s at the same time. Perhaps then, the two fanbases will eliminate each other, Hatfields and McCoys style.

I actually work on Chambers St, right next to the parade route.
I’ve already informed the office that I will not be in on the day of a victory parade. Even if it weren’t the Yankees, the crowds make it impossible to get anywhere all day. During the Giants parade, we couldn’t leave the building, and drunken morons in brand-new jerseys started a small riot on Reade St, even stomping on cop cars. So yeah, I think I’ll stay home that day.

I will admit...
I was in my high school’s marching band, and we participated in the parade in 2000. I met Paul O’Neil, who seemed a genuinely nice guy, and Mike Stanton (I think)- they were both going around and meeting us kids a little bit before their floats/vehicles/whatever left the staging area. Going down the avenue with all of the paper, it was pretty cool.
My favorite part was the fact that I was wearing my Piazza T-Shirt under my marching band uniform. I got a lot of crap for that after everything was done, when we were heading back to Staten Island on the busses, when I took my uniform shirt off. It was a “bury-the-jersey-of-David-Ortiz-in-your-new-stadium” kind of move, I was hoping. And, hey, the Yankees haven’t won the World Series since…

I really do think it is different with Chipper then a guy like Victorino, cuz while we hate Larry (and believe me, I HATE him), I hate him for what he has done to us on the baseball field with his talent, and I hate him because I know how good he is, I respect him as a ball player and I wouldn’t hate him if he didn’t personally rip our hearts out time after time. I don’t have any respect for Victorino, he is some mediocre douche bag who will be forgotten when he stops playing. That sums things up perfectly
Jones, we hate him because he’s great, and that talent always seems to manifest itself as a Mets loss. Victorino, he’s not. Arguably, he’s good, on average, he’s okay. The guy still hasn’t put up a single season with a BA over .300, or with more than 15 HR, or 75 RBI. Comparing his stats, he’s most similar to Rocco Baldelli, Bernard Gilkey, Kevin Bass…Not a whole lot of amazing talent in the pool. The sports media has a hard-on for his supposed grission and has a “love affair” with him when there’s no actual reason for it.
Jose Reyes had a very similar season that Victorino had this season- .297 BA, 16 HR, 68 RBI, 56 steals, and all you hear are people jumping on his back- his stills are going to drop precipitously, trade him while he still has talent, he’s a no-good, overrated nobody, blah, blah, blah…

I root for the Yankees.
One, if they win, we get Holliday.
Two, if they win, we never again have to hear about how unclutch and cancerous A-Rod is to any team trying to win the world series. It may hurt as Met fans, but that would be a victory to me, as a baseball fan, to not have to listen to one of the best players ever be scrutinized and ripped apart like he is some nobody. For us younger guys, we will be telling our kids/grandkids how A-Rod and Pujols owned this generation. To hear people talk about A-Rod now, you would think he is Mike Lowell.

Also, in a few years, the Phillies may be irrelevant again, and the rivalry will be essentially over. The Mets vs. Yankees feud will always stand though. It has stood since the days of the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Baseball Giants.

We meet six times the entire season now, in games that take place during such a time that they don’t matter all that much, as the standings are still very morphic. It’s not so much a feud as it is a fight for temporary bragging rights.
