Amazing Vigil.
On October 10th, I left the following letter enclosed in plastic & taped to my brick at the Citi Field Fan Walk ---
"Dear New York Metropolitans ---
Please accept my condolences for your dreadful 2009 baseball season, one that I am writing-off as never happening!
I am leaving this candle as a sign that, as a loyal & true Met fan, I am keeping a vigil until this baseball team comes back to life for the 2010 season.
Signed,
Loyal & true to the orange & blue!"
During the week prior to the last homestand against the Astros, we were sitting out in back of the house talking about the baseball playoffs and how nice it would have been if the Mets played during the season the way they finished-up with a sweep against the Astros. I was very happy to have been at Citi Field for the last game of the season (since I was there for the 1st one) and to finally see an end to the agony. We were talking about something to "Mets-orcise" Citi Field of the evil spirits hovering in & around it from May through the end of the season. One idea was to visit the ballpark periodically during the off-season, walk around it singing "Meet the Mets," "Take Me out to the Ballgame" ... perhaps even chanting a litany of the names of some of the Mets' heroes. Then out came the idea of a vigil ... bringing a flameless candle to Citi Field & placing it on my brick! At this point, I needed no further encouragement ... "the die had been cast!"
2 Saturdays ago, I made a pilgrimage out to Citi Field where I placed the above note & a flameless vigil candle on my brick (see picture) . Right after that, I had the opportunity to chat about this with WFAN radio personality, Steve Somers, on the air at approximately 4:10 PM ... he compared it to "sitting shiva!" I also sent an email with the picture to Q104.3 radio personality, Ken Dashow (Sunday morning "Breakfast with the Beatles" show), who loved it!
So now I am posting this as a "call to arms" to all the real Met fans ... a raly call to do the same ... in the hope that the NY Metropolitan baseball team & its organization come to realize that Met fans are the BEST fans in the world, that they deserve a better team (so much more deserving of a beautiful, new ballpark than the one that was fielded from May), that we can forget about the disastrous 2009 season as if it never happened by offering our condolences and looking forward to the rebirth of the NY Mets in 2010!
Let's go Mets!

I don't want Jeff thinking he's got the best, most devoted fans in baseball
I want him scared to death that this year has kicked a huge hole in the fan base and his receipts are really going to suffer unless he gets us a very nice team for next year.
Never mind.
I just realized your Avatar is the picture.
This is what I think may have happened after your valiant effort.
1) A cop or city sanitation employee removed the paper and candle as litter. You should consider yourself lucky you didn’t get a summons for littering.
2) Jeff and/or Omar got word of it and went to look, and when they saw the candle they figured the person that bought the brick died. They then said to themselves “glad he paid for the brick up front”.
3) The person whose brick you placed the candle on is pissed at you because you put wax all over their brick.
i don't know if i'd say that
i mean well over 1000 cumulative days on the DL isn’t really anyone’s fault. and nobody can compete w/ that kind of handicap, not the phillies, not the yankees, nobody.

shitty backup players and not-ready minor leaguers seems like self-inflicted to me.
just my opinion, and I will admit I am probably extra pissed at the Mets and will continue to kill them until they prove otherwise by at least making it to the post season.
Of course the two teams playing in the WS don’t help my mood any. I am reasonably certain that if I saw Minaya crossing the street in front of me, I may just do the deed right there.
You're both right.
Injuries killed us, but we should have at least had better backups. Minor leaguers I can deal with, because anyone in the know would say the Mets have at least an above average system now.

yeah but
what do a couple more marginally better backups give us? 5 more wins, maybe? i’ll be ultra-generous and even give you 15 wins from a bunch of AAA players and then what, we’re still WAY out of contention so what does it matter?
of course its frustrating but by no means did that ruin our season. and for the record, no team has the kind of depth in the high minors that was needed to weather this storm nor should they. if omar had somehow presciently accumulated all of that depth in AAA and we didn’t have these injuries, we’d all be killing him for misallocation of resources so i haven’t bought that argument all season long. its complaining for the sake of complaining. sometimes you just have to accept that you got screwed and move on.

"Mets-orcise" Citi Field...
That’s pretty original. I like it. Here’s to hoping it works…
