I could live with Minaya, operating on the assumption that he’s been undermined and second-guessed from above.
but Manuel has no redeeming qualities, and neither does Dan Warthen.

Yea that's what we need!
Instead of an incompetent GM, an incompetent GM with no authority! The Phillies quake with fear! Seriously, you think it should be the Wilpons’ jobs to decide whether his baseball moves are good ideas?

In the Jeff Wilpon/Chris Carlin interview right after the press conference,
Carlin asked where does Jeff stand regarding the keep the core or break up the core. Jeff stated that this is Omar’s decision but he would like to keep the core and would like to add complimentary players. (This sounds good.) But the Jeff continues that these complimentary players should be “gritty,” they should be willing to get their uniforms dirty and they sould be able to connect to the NY fans. Yeah, I don’t really want the Wilpons making baseball moves.
The best thing Jeff said, imo, during the press conference was when he was asked that wouldn’t payroll “have to be reduced due to reduced revenue.” Wilpon replied that revenue isn’t necessarily reduced since if they put a good team on the field and win the fans and revenue will come back. It’s a simple concept but at least Wilpon doesn’t take the Loria stance on the payroll/fan relationship.

I'm just trying to imagine
Eckstein diving into home like a top, not getting his uniform dirty and only getting dirt on his helmet. All of these scenarios end with him suffering a broken neck.

Pointless
This is going to be a painful offseason, followed by an equally painful season. Looking forward to winning 85 games or so, attrributing the increased win total to a full season of Francoeur and Cora, then coming to the conclusion this proves the Mets can’t win with Wright/Reyes leading the way.

The question this offseason
It isn’t going to be how good or bad the offseason is. It’s going to be how much long term damage does this offseason do to the organization. It’s possible, but not probable, that Minaya sells low on one of the core players because the perception is they can’t win with them. That would be bad. More likely though is the probability that Minaya will sign mediocre, high risk players to albatross like contracts. Doing this would pretty much ensure a return to abyss of the early 90’s and necessitate a major rebuilding process after Minaya gets fired.
At this point the best I’m hoping for is that they do go out and sign “gritty” complimentary players to cheap short term contracts. At least they can be easily written off when the players inevitably fail and Minaya is finally fired.

Not what I really wanted to hear but not all bad
It would have been better to hear Jeff Say that he would like to add to the core, instead of adding complimentary players. I am glad that he is giving Omar a flexible budget.

i think omar would make an excellent
third base coach, now that the position is open.

Injuries
Wilpon said the team will change their medical protocols to help limit injury, and he will personally see to it that the team does a better job communicating injuries to the media.
Wilpon noted many of the team’s injuries were suffered on the road, where teams typically rely on the opposing team’s medical staff.
It would be easy to jump to conclusions and say he blames other team’s staffs for the injuries. It might be naive of me to say that the other team’s doctors don’t know the players medical history nor follow the players daily like the Mets staff. So, as part of the new protocol, the Mets medical staff will follow the team on the road. I don’t have the full transcript, so I don’t know what was the question or in what context he was saying that.
by Michkin on Oct 5, 2009 1:54 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but ....
if another team’s medical staff says something like….. " it’s a calf strain ", and the player in question is your allstar shortstop who relies on his legs for 90% of his game, you may want to question that diagnosis as a matter of procedure, and have YOUR doctors verify it. Not doing that is, at a minimum, negligent.

this is so depressing
are we sure the Wilpons aren’t also in charge of Chrysler, Lehman Brothers, and the post-invasion strategy for Iraq?

Jeff and Omar going on tour....
Just heard….Jeff and Omar will make a live, joint appearance, IN STUDIO, with Mike Francesa today at 5:00 PM EST.
You can see it in all its glory on YES, or listen on WFAN.COM.

To be fair...
I’ve actually stated listening to Francesca a bit lately, because he in general seems to be making good, critical yet not overboard analyses of the Mets. He shuts down callers who say, “Daniel Murphy may not have hit 15 HRs, but he leads the team in grit” (actual quote, by the way), and realizes that Jerry and Omar have to go. He still doesn’t understand that we have a farm, and thinks Francouer is actually a good baseball player, but he’s at least tolerable lately.

"Daniel Murphy may not have hit 15 HRs, but he leads the team in grit"
that’s preposterous. Francoeur overtook Murphy in that category back in August

Maybe Francessa is going to be the Mets' new third base coach
And Omar and Jeffy want to be there in person for the announcement.
Alternatively, maybe Francessa is going to be the Mets’ newly-created Assistant GM for Grission. He will tell Omar what players have it, and then Omar will be obliged to sign or trade for those players.

fatso would make a decent assistant GM.

Not so sure about that, myself
I’m thinking his first recommendation would be for the Mets to pick up Jeter. Y’know, because he’s a leader and a captain and a winner and whatnot.

Nah, I think he would be even keeled about it
most of the time, except in interleague or if the team he worked for faced the Yanks.
then he would lobby for loss.
by fxcarden on Oct 5, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm sure he'd be even-keeled;
I just assume he’d be terrible.

Mike really put the screws to Jeff and Omar regarding Murphy....
Mike: What is it that Murphy does well ?
Omar: um….we’ll he’s improving.
Jeff is in the background with a big smirk on his face.
Omar is totally out gunned by Mike.
by fxcarden on Oct 5, 2009 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Omar would be totally outgunned by an empty soggy cardboard box.
I love how they announce that 2009 was “unacceptable”, but the solution is to come back in 2010 with the same owner, GM, manager, bench coaches, and 40 man roster.
Mets slogan: “If it don’t work, don’t fix it.”
Listening to those two asshats (Wilpon and Omar) makes me want to throw up.
Every sports franchise takes on a the persona of its ownership. Good franchises have good owners. It’s almost impossible for dysfunctional moron-level ownership to produce a championship.
Someone earlier mentioned Daniel Snyder, and that is the perfect analogy to Wilpon. Fools with too much money who run franchises that are the laughingstocks of their respective sports.
I firmly believe that it’s almost impossible for us to win a title with Wilpon at the helm.

More laughable BS from Omar...
Minaya likened Murphy to Boston’s situation with Kevin Youklis from a few seasons ago, saying: "He was not the big, productive hitter that he is early on.."
=====
Wow! Murphy is the same as Youkilis! I didn’t know that before Omar told me, I learned something today.
I bet Ollie is the same as Zack Greinke. They are both in the Homo Sapiens species.
And Pagan is like Pujols, both NL players with last names beginning with P.
We have the WS clinched in 2010.

actually he likened Perez to Verlander having an off year last year
saying pitchers are so different from one year to the next. Difference is Verlander was actually good before 08’
by Rigsay on Oct 5, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
that comparison
might have actually been the dumbest thing i ever heard and if omar has a single defender out there, he shouldn’t any more.
the fact our GM is basing his offseason strategy on the theory that pitching is “hot and cold” and Ollie may bounce back because an absolute stud like Verlander — a former No. 2 overall pick who had 3 great years before one fluky bad one — did just makes me shake my head and weep silently.
i know he cant throw him under the bus, but just say “he’ll be healthy, he pressed b/c of the contract…”

I used to think Omar gave cookie cutter politician answers
now hes just pathetic and unconvincing.
As much as I hate Fatcessa, I gotta give it to the fat guy. He pressed them about Murphy and Omar basically had nothing to say other than that he’s improving.
Franny’s point that ALL these guys will be back next year gives them little room to improve other than LF and maybe 1B. pretty scary bleak stuff
by Rigsay on Oct 6, 2009 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
haha seriously
im just listening to the whole thing now. it’s scary. i dont think its going to be pretty. you get the sense omar is so intent on saving his job next year it’s all about the short-term “fix.”
my favorite omar-ism is how he uses words like “nucleus” and “reconstruct” that francesa used in his questions, as if its the first time omars heard the word and he wants to try it out.
by Bieser's Balk on Oct 6, 2009 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
the one good thing about that though
is that he probably won’t do something dumb like blow up the core to rebuild, since he won’t be around for the rebuild if he does. I have 0 confidence that he will make any good moves this offseason, but hopefully he can’t make any mind-blowingly bad ones either.
