if he rejects it
Depending on his status they will get 1 or 2 draft picks for him.

but even if he had him
and he rejected our offer of arb. our first round pick is protected cuz we sucked a fattie
So Carter, Lora, 3.5 million, and a few million not spent on draft picks.
If we use that money to fix the ML roster, I can live with this. Shitty haul if we go into cost cutting mode.

What does a "a few million not spent on draft picks"
have to do with this trade?

I think he's referring to the extra draft picks we won't be getting
if we had offered Wags arbitration

Correct.
A mid to late first rounder and a supplemental pick would have likely cost 2.5 million to sign.

If Wagner declines arbitration
this trade was a disaster.

.287 OPB in GCL. And he’s 20.

34 games, 108 abs in the gulf coast league, with an injured wrist.
It’s way too small a sample size to judge. He had a .455 OBP (15.5 % BB rate) the prior season in th DSL with a slightly larger sample size, which is also too small to reach a judgement. The difference in the two sets of data should at least cause us to look for a larger sample before reaching a conclusion.

His walk rate was excellent in 2007 and 2008

Hopefully this works better.

okay, but he still is 20, and in the GCL.
usually, you should be higher up than that

The next step is short season A ball,
where most 21 year old college draftees end up. Most other franchises take their time with their latin prospects.

Not to defend the trade or anything.
But what players from the Red Sox would have been a fair trade for a RP coming off Tommy John surgery?
this is not an exciting way to start the offseason
that said, at least carter will provide some depth in buffalo.
Fernando's gonna have to cover a lotta ground
If he’s flanked by Carter and Duda. Hopefully Ike can take over a big league role sometime next season and Nieuwenhuis or Duda can move up a level to help out defensively.

Sorry
Nieuwenhis or Guzman, with Duda taking over 1B for Ike.

In a vaccum, sure.
But as our only pickup from Billy Wagner, a Type A free agent who is the most likely player to reject arb? Blahahljdslfjaf

So are you advocating that we should have kept Billy and just collected the two first round picks?
Or do you think the Mets got hosed by the Red Sox an should have gotten better players for him. And if so who?
Either/or.
We probably weren’t gonna get good value from the Red Sox, but I guess I understand that they wanted to do it to have more control over who they got. But really, Chris Carter and some terrible player? That’s it?

Actually
that’s the most compelling case for the actual trade I have seen. I was only moaning the other day about a lack of LHB on the bench, so this is an intriguing possibility. If he can be RF/1B/PH (lefty), spelling Francouer and occasionally Murph, and Nick Evans can be LF/1B/PH (righty), spelling Holliday (please!) and also occasionally Murph, then it might work out rather well.
