Hamels Applesauce - Piazza a dad again, Adrian Gonzalez rumors rebuild, Hamels' struggles continue

Star-divide

Meet the Mets

Congratulations to Mike Piazza and wife Alicia Rickter on the birth of their second child

The Padres did not include Adrian Gonzalez's picture on their 2010 season ticket promotional materials. The trade rumor mill is swirling hard now.

Around the NL East

Cole Hamels continues to struggle for the Phillies. Hamels' suckiness has led some columnists to discourage Charlie Manuel from starting Hamels the rest of the way. One thing is for sure, Joe Blanton has a lot of pressure tonight.

The Good Phight criticizes the strike zone for AJ Burnett.

What will the Marlins do with Jeremy Hermida during the offseason?

Around MLB

For those of us who wish to see Bobby Valentine back with the Mets, his lack of job offers is some kind of encouraging news.

The Giants are bringing back Freddy Sanchez for $12 million.

Toronto's conflict with manager Cito Gaston seems to be clearing up.

David Wells plays the role of Jimmy Rollins: Yankees in 5.

Picture this: Alex Rodriguez as a centaur.

Howard Johnson comments on the World Series so far.

Boston is considering making Jason Bay a big offer for some reason.

With the Orioles cutting Melvin Mora, it's time to look back at his amazing career resurgence.

does he WANT people to laugh at him?

The most damning thing

(if true) is he put it the one place where he can’t just play it off as a joke, irony, or hyperbole.

That said, how soon until we see the Three A-Rod Centaur Moon t-shirt?

Well, I know one thing

A-Rod is a jackass (think: double-meaning) and egotistical. Clearly, he’s unwittingly trying to convince us…

A-rod

That is very interesting because, I know a chick that went out with Robby Alomar when he was in Cleveland, and she told me that Robby had painting of himself as a centaur over his bed……..weird.

reading through the comments at Metsmerized

I think I just threw up in my mouth. They want to trade Beltran.

Thank god for Amazin Avenue

could you imagine trying to talk baseball on a site like that?

What “kooky” posts have you seen here?

well

just read last night’s game thread and i’d say all those yankee gay jokes were pretty “kooky,” or at least “ugly.”

After i typed that I wanted to add

“except mine,” but there’s no edit button.

And those, admittedly bad, posters were from a tired man who was still a little drunk

glad you realize, and i'm sorry to seem self righteous

i will be really happy if everyone just cuts that shit out.

That was just because of the post at pinstripe ally

Picture of Wright how the mets choked, and one calling piazza a pussy when clemens threw that bat at him. I fucking hate yankee fans

by Evan_S on Nov 1, 2009 5:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

uh ok

but the ugly part is the gay bashing, not the yankee bashing.

by letsgocyclones on Nov 1, 2009 5:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, Yankee bashing is never ugly.

I hadn’t seen the thread, since I’ve been avoiding the WS like the plague. Even when they’re playing for the championship, Yankee fans can’t help but be insecure little bitches. Whichever city gets the parade, I’m hoping for a nor’easter that day.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Nov 1, 2009 5:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't mean it as gay bashing

I was calling Arod/Jeter gay. I never meant to imply that I had a problem with gay people. I’m one of the more liberal people you’d ever meet, and I would never discriminate or demean anybody based on their sexual preference, race/nationality, sex or anything like that.

"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."

by Evan_S on Nov 1, 2009 5:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The Point Is, I Think....

… if it hasn’t already been made clear, is that calling “Arod/Jeter” gay is using the term “gay” in a negative connotation. The connotation you are making is that being gay is a bad thing. You’re using “gay” as an insult. I don’t know if it can be considered “gay bashing” but your use of the term “gay” is in a way to insult A-Rod and Jeter, and it can be taken to mean that being gay is bad.

Well....

…. the whole “let’s try Daniel Murphy at 2B in the major leagues since he played a decent 1B” thing recently was, well, kooky, I’m sorry to say.

by wgarrett on Nov 1, 2009 4:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It makes sense

in that, the season was over, Murphy is not going to be a first baseman on this team after 2010 (if he even is the first baseman in 2010) and if he shows he can play somewhat competently at second, it adds value if he become a bench player. Him playing second for a month in no way would have hurt the 2009 Mets.

See....

… what I mean? You’re kooky, Evan_S. If a player is not good at 1B, and Murphy wasn’t… oh man, no no no, I’m not going through this again.

Maybe I should go back to that other website and apologize to them.

Wait

Murphy had the second highest UZR/150 in the NL, he was very good at first this year.

It's not a new idea, either.

People had the same thought last off-season, before the Mets sent him to the AFL to play second base. In fact, given his excellent UZR at first this season, I’d say that there’s even more reason to try it than there was a year ago.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Nov 1, 2009 5:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No, It's Not A New Idea....

… but, if you read this article, you’ll see one person who doesn’t think he can become a middle infielder:

They also think that Santos and Francoeur are the type pf players we need to round out the roster with.

One of the guys that writes there thinks the Mets should DFA Murph because he’s not worth keeping at the league minimum.

Yeah

I love how one guy, advocating for Gonzalez trade obviously says:

Reyes
Wright
Beltran
Gonzalez
franceour (sic)

thats a very solid top 5

In what fucking world is Francoeur even 1/1000000 the player that Reyes, Wrigh, Beltran, and to a lesser extent Gonzalez is? How can any fan look at Francoeur and think he is of any value?

Bay is a perfect fit in left for Boston.

He seems to have a decent arm but no range, which is actually an acceptable combo in left at Fenway (moreso than any other park). Most of the things that worry me about Bay here are certainly minimized in Fenway.

Bay is a DH

For his career his ARM has been worth -21.5 runs. Last year it was -0.7.

i haven't watched as much bay

but every time damon catches the ball in left i half think he should tuck it under his arm and run it into the cut-off man.

maybe

But he still has to play half of his games away from there, and he won’t be able to justify a gigantic contract like that either way.

Phils should trade Hamels to Milwaukee.

I hear they have a new pitching coach who can fix guys in 10 minutes.

by madisonmetsfan on Nov 1, 2009 5:03 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Yeah

We all know how fantastic Chris Capuano, Ben Sheets and (perhaps) Manny Parra turned out to be, right?

Yeah, I think Cole Hamels could thrive up there in Cheese Country.

At the very least, however, Yovani Gallardo is fantastic!

Juxtapositional sarcasm never looked so blatant

It is indeed oxymoronic, re “fantastic”.

But seriously, Gallardo is the real deal.

Just wanted to clear things up

Gallardo isn’t a bust like those other guys. Putting him in the same category is an egregious offense.

Well, it might be a bit too early to label Hamels and Parra a bust, but it has looked that way so far…

I'm doing a little study on the NL East and thought I'd share an interesting little tidbit. To all of the self-loathing Mets fans/lazy 'MLB insiders' and journalistic parrots who have 1) Condemned the entire Mets organization as a joke 2) Written off this core's impressive run to date and 3) Deified the Phillies as unstoppable juggernauts w/ no chance to lose this division:

Yes, those wins are weighted towards '06-'07 and yes, the Phillies' are more recent but the fact remains that no other team in that span can even come close to the Mets total of days in first place, which should be garnering a lot more respect than it has. If only because we still have nearly the same core in place that has clearly had a lot of success and health-willing can very easily do so again in 2010.
