Our worst fears
Look at that next to last paragraph. I know you should never listen to anyone when they talk about what a team is looking to do, but Bengie Molina AND Jermaine Dye? I'm actually now physically ill.

Why?
I seriously need to supplement rooting for the Mets by rooting for a second favorite team, and particpating in their discussions. Preferably one with a fucking clue.

I lucked out in that regard.
Had a lot of family from Boston, so that gives me a well-run, large market fallback fan position. It DID make the ’86 Series a little tough, but since I grew up on the Mets, not all that tough.

Signing Jermaine Dye would be an atrocity of mankind
but would signing Molina be THAT bad? Yes he sucks, but there are no good catchers out there, he can hit for decent power, plus it means we wouldn’t be rushing Thole yet.
I’d be happy with Willingham/Lackey/Molina and some other 1B
But Omar, please don’t go anywhere near Dye.
yes molina would be that bad
in that there are better fielders/equally capable hitters on the market for MUCH less money. yes molina hits for power but he has literally the worst pitch recognition/plate discipline in baseball which means what he gives you in power he takes away in OBP. i’m not saying he wouldn’t perform but what he brings can be had for cheaper.
molina got $6M this season and has already come out and said that he wants multiple years AND an increase in pay. So minimum, you’re looking at 2yr/$14M and w/ his power and good defensive rep. I’d be surprised if he didn’t get it somewhere. tack on the fact that he’s 35 and in bad shape and i’ll take gregg zaun for 1yr/$1.5M deal any day.

agreed on Zaun
he’s currently our best option for a 1 year deal

This being the same GM that brought us Moises Alou (twice), I would not be surprised if this really happened.
But at least Alou was really good
injury prone, but one hell of a hitter
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
yeah he was really good before he came to us.
we only got him after he hit the “one more year” stage (twice).
We wsa 2 WAR player in 2007
And he only played in 87 games. If healthy (the story of his career really) he would have been a great addition and we’d have made the playoffs.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
Not good enough. We can do worse, if we try hard really really hard:
*2M to Alex Cora again
*3/36 to old below-replacement SP
*Trade the farm for an injured RP (or Adam Dunn)
*Long term commitment to Orlando Hudson
*3y extension to Jerry after a hot streak
*60M to Aroldis Chapman
*Increase in ticket prices, regardless of what they’ve said before
*Keith doesn’t come back in 2010
Not including the usual “TRAID Writgh for Yuniesky Betancourt/David Eckstein”, cause it’s a given.
this post was soul crushing even in a hypothetical form

the best part is that in the only comment
the person only objects to Chris Snyder.
"[The Giants] beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. ... It wasn't even close." - Raheem Morris, 9/27/09
Hey, at least Eckstein won't be the starting second baseman
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
Joel Sherman doesn't want Bay/Holliday in the outfield because he is lobbying for the job, obviously.

wait
what’s wrong with Dye? he’s a good hitter
"Solo homers usually come with no one on base." -Ralph Kiner
WAR this year, -0.3, huge fielding liability
he’s worth negative runs on the year, despite his bat, and I cant imagine the Citi outfield would be any kinder to him. He’s a DH waiting to happen, and we’re an NL team.

He literally CANNOT play in the National League.

ok, I'll bite
it’s not inconceivable (though maybe not probably either) that he could OPS .885 like he did in 2008. that’s higher than Beltran did in 2008 or 2007. that’d make him a pretty good hitter.
(he still wouldn’t be a valuable player because of his horrendous defense, but it’s not like he’s Francoeur-level bad.)
You know what's worse?
The idea that the Mets might give a multi-year contract to pry Molina away from San Francisco because they just want him that much.
Also, from the article:
One position the Mets want to try to incorporate Omar Minaya’s passion for "slugging" is behind the plate…What? I thought Omar hated “unathletic mashers”. Since when does he have a passion for slugging?
When that guy ONLY slugs
as opposed to someone like Adam Dunn, who also understands how to walk. But noooo, those damn base cloggers…

Yeah, you just know that guy
is going to come back and gloat the day Omar signs Dye to a multi-year deal. Can we just fire Omar now so he can’t sign Dye and Molina?

Maybe Omar is just posturing
In an attempt to improve his bargaining position for Holliday. It’s better Boras doesn’t know if Omar really wants Holliday. Not that I’m really too optimistic, since we know Omar doesn’t really know how ballgames are won and lost.
I've already come to terms with the fact that
Benji Molina is prolly going to be our starting catcher.
at least its not Yadier
sure he’s a ton better, but i’d have this burning urge to destroy things every time i watched a mets game.

My testicles just crawled up into my abdomen
after reading the article.
There’s nothing wrong, at all, with acquiring a LF, C, and a 2B each with medium pop, as opposed to a slugger in LF and a couple of light hitters up the middle. The problem, of course, is that Molina and Dye are, what, the worst possible choices for the “medium power” roles? Molina’s OBP kills his offense, and Dye’s defense kills whatever offense he may have remaining. Good God.
I see the Mets are also rumored to be going after Chris Snyder, who may be yet another sinkhole on offense with a high price tag. He makes me think of the Brain Schneider signing, 11.25 mil here over two years including a buyout. If it’s a swap for Castillo straight up that’s certainly worse than the rumored Castillo for Overbay deal. Given Snyder’s back surgery, and that AFAIK he didn’t play after the surgery, I have no idea what kind of player he’s going to be in 2010 and 2011. Castillo has SOME value this offseason, and given that guys like Greg Zaun are going to be available for short, cheap deals, I can’t imagine swapping for Snyder is the best use of the value Castillo still has.
I realize all this might just be posturing by the Mets in order to enhance their negotiating positions, and nothing could be dumber at this point that announcing “We will sign Matt Holliday, whatever the cost”, but you never hear rumors concerning the BoSox GM babbling about going after guys like Dye and Molina.
