A (maybe really dumb) proposal made in boredom

After seeing Wright's negative UZR projection earlier, would it make any sense to move him to 1B and sign Chone Figgins to play 3B? Wright's arm has always seemed shaky, so this might make a little bit of sense (what is the metric that would tell me about his arm, by the way?). I know that defensive metrics and projections are imperfect, but it's just a thought that came to me since I'm super bored at a meeting right now, so I figured I'd throw it out there. Thanks for indulging me.

We know now that in order to make UZR more effective, we’re supposed to look at it in a three year sample, making Wright -2.1 over that time. Not bad.

Wright toyed with the idea of moving himself to second if someone like A-Rod ever came around, and I think it’d make a whole lot more sense to move him there due to the defensive spectrum, what we have in the minors, and the fact that it’s a hell of a lot easier to get a first baseman than a second baseman.

No reason to move him to the easiest defensive position. He can handle third.

ain't had enough...

I agree, 2nd seems more logical than 1st

His main problem is his arm. He definitely has the speed to play 2nd, and he seems to have good quickness and a good glove. At 2nd his arm won’t be as much of an issue.

Are you sure it wouldn't be a problem

It’s not like his arm is weak his throws are just erratic, would moving him to second really improve that?

A shorter distance to throw

would make it less erratic

Playing second base really can really shortens a players career though

Sure, there are exceptions but I wouldn’t want to move our franchise player to a position with so much attrition.

I'd love for Wright to get a 70s porno stache

that would be hilarious

You see Evan, he lobby David Wright for porn stache.

I'd like to avoid Figgins

Was surprised to see that he’ll be 32 by Opening Day 2010, I thought he was like more like 27 for some reason. His awesome D at 3rd looks legit (+/- said +31 this year, wow) but I don’t like the idea of giving big $$ to a guy with a career SLG of .388 on the wrong side of 30.

This

He had, more or less, a career year last season. He’s (supposedly) a hot commodity. Not a good combination from a buyer’s point of view.

It only makes sense if Wright continues to severly decline.

I wouldn’t read too much into one year of UZR or +/-.

There's that.

Convincing even a team player to move to a position that severely damages his chances of going to the Hall of Fame would take some doing.

I'm doing a little study on the NL East and thought I'd share an interesting little tidbit. To all of the self-loathing Mets fans/lazy 'MLB insiders' and journalistic parrots who have 1) Condemned the entire Mets organization as a joke 2) Written off this core's impressive run to date and 3) Deified the Phillies as unstoppable juggernauts w/ no chance to lose this division:

Yes, those wins are weighted towards '06-'07 and yes, the Phillies' are more recent but the fact remains that no other team in that span can even come close to the Mets total of days in first place, which should be garnering a lot more respect than it has. If only because we still have nearly the same core in place that has clearly had a lot of success and health-willing can very easily do so again in 2010.
