Marty Noble has no idea what Sabermetrics are.
I sent the second question in. Yes, I was trying to set him up, but I was expecting him to at least bash actual Sabermetrics in his grumpy old man ways, and not just WHIP and OPS. Gotta love Marty anyway.

i think thats actually a pretty good answer from him
seeing as most of the MM would have said something along the lines of:
“The game is played by players and not computers”
"Solo homers usually come with no one on base." -Ralph Kiner
Its a good criticisms of WHIP, OPS, and quality starts.
I was just sort of hoping for some VORPie bashing.
Really Marty?
And while we’re at it, why is it that a listing of average runs per game for teams exists nowhere?
This is just plain lazy. Is Baseball-Reference some kinda well kept saber-secret? Hear ya go.

yea, that was the only part that really bothered me
everything else was pretty much right. Although, one other thing caught my eye:
“But I’d prefer to know the two components of OPS rather than their total. Luis Castillo’s and Jeff Francoeur’s totals for 2009 were equal, .732. Based on the figures alone, the players were equals. And of course they weren’t. "
$100 says he thinks that Francouer was the better player b/c of his higher slugging percentage.

Yeah I was wondering about that too
Although it wouldn’t be the SLG%… it’s the RsBI.

Its this mentality that "guys in their moms basements reading spreadsheets"
Have some other motivation other than to best express and understand different elements of the game. Like Sabermetrics is some niche sub-culture of baseball rather than an attempt at objective analysis, the same thing guys like Noble are getting paid to do, just with more refined tools. Stats like OPS and WAR aren’t created as some sort of competitive measure of “who can come up with the best stat,” their flaws aren’t deliberately ignored out of emotional attachment, they’re both part of a cohesive process of trying to understand the game better. Digging through the shallow end of the depths of statistical analysis, trying to find something “they” “missed” to prove a conclusion that’s sloppily presented as post hoc but actually derived from a preexisting prejudice, that’s really where you find petty, competitive headbutting.

I don't know, but my eye cought the question right after, where the guys said that he doesn't think there's any reason to not re-sign Brian Schneider. Whoa.

oh dear God
from the last question: “this is what I would do: trade Oliver Perez and John Maine and a Minor Leaguer for Roy Halladay”
And then after that I’d trade Luis Castillo straight up for Chase Utley (but the Phillies have to pick up 70% of Utley’s contract), and then I’d trade Dan Murphy and Nick Evans for Albert Pujols.

I'd then try and swing Bobby Bonilla and Mo Vaughn, (they're still being paid, right?)
for Joe Mauer. They get two veteran hitters and we get a young catcher.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
damn, I was gonna go with
Parnell and some C prospect for Mauer
then swing Bonillia and Vaughn to the Royal for Greinke, Bannister and Disco. THey get veteran leadership and bats

we can swing Parnell and Alfinzo Harris for Greinke
They get two upside guys, we get a guy coming off what is most likely his peak season.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
We're already trading Ollie, along with Maine and a minor leaguer for Halladay
and Castillo for Utely.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
Shhh, we might be able to get away with trading him twice
But now you ruined it. Nice work.
