Manager of the Year Applesauce - Manuel does not win, report on Havens, Davey Johnson in DC

Star-divide

Meet the Mets

Toby Hyde provides us with a little update on Reese Havens down in Arizona. Ted Berg gives his two cents.

BlueandOrange.net presents an exercise in what might have been.

Why all this talk about Mark DeRosa when there's another guy out there who does the same things?

Kevin Goldstein is still pretty high on Jenrry Mejia and Wilmer Flores.

Now for the over the top commentaries of the day. First, Kevin Kernan urges Omar to go all Brian Cashman on this year's free agents. Second, Paul Raymond seems to think that Dave Jauss shows that the Mets don't want to win. Because a bench coach is really that important.

Around the NL East

The Phillies are apparently favorites to land Mark DeRosa.

Good work by the Nationals, signing Davey Johnson to be a senior advisor with the organization. Johnson worked with top pick Stephen Strasburg on the US Olympic team.

The Marlins are facing a little labor difficulty with their new stadium construction project.

Around MLB

The Managers of the Year are: Jim Tracy and Mike Scioscia. Tracy promptly received a three year extension from Colorado.

After his enormous free agent contract and subsequent major bust status, Jason Schmidt will likely retire from baseball.

More confessions from non-Greinke Cy Young voters. This time Mark Feinsand explains his King Felix vote. This one is definitely more reasonable than the Verlander vote, but still.

Raymond article

Is Bleacher Report a reputable site? This Raymond guy is an idiot. Not only is the point of this article terrible, but he refers to Bob Melvin and Eric Wedge as former “head coaches”, and there are about 7 missing commas. That’s one of the worst articles I’ve ever read.

I think Bleacher Report allows users to contribute articles and commentary

Although I may be confusing it with another site.

Ah

Makes sense.

Probably Fanhouse.

Because they start bringing in the likes of Jay Mariotti, who’s a dick and hates blogs to begin with.

Stuff

That’s a scary look at what could have happened.

The Mets don’t want to win. Duh. I thought we all knew that.

That’s a smart move by the Nats, I am guessing. If anything else, it brings a winning guy into their organization. He probably will be very helpful in allowing the Nats to draft low cost/high reward amateur and Minor League players, given his experience with amateur/college baseball and the Olympics, and all of that. If only our front office had the foresight (not that I have any sentimental love for Johnson or anything)…

DeRosa definitely has a grit that will fit in in Philly.

I lobby Omar give Schmidt $7 million/three years.

That’s a pretty good account of a vote for Felix Hernandez over Greinke. My own feelings mirror what Feinsand said. But, at the end of the day, Greinke put up better numbers over the course of the year. You can’t argue with him winning AL Cy Young. As much as I wanted King Felix to win it, I think I would have been more “outraged” if Greinke didn’t win.

Bench Coaches

They are like the Vice Presidents of MLB coaches. They make no difference unless the manager gets ejected, fired, resigns, dies, gets impeached and removed, or there is a tie vote in the Senate.

Well maybe not the last two.

unfortunately for us

Jerry Manuel is having the baseball equivalent of being blown by an intern in the Oval Office right now

"[The Giants] beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. ... It wasn't even close." - Raheem Morris, 9/27/09

Would that be a step up or step down from the above?

God knows, none of them are lookers. Does psychoness make up for, or is worse than, federal grand juries, blue dresses, and that whole schpiel? I don’t know…

Re: What might have been

I don’t know if it’s scary of just pathetic to realize that as bad as last year, and recent years have been, it could have easily been 20x worse.

Basically what I mean is

We’re like not even half-way to the mets basement of bad

Holy cow!

Sorry for the slight digression, but the writers actually got another one right – Lincecum got the Cy Young. That’s a shocker – a good one, to be sure.

Franky C.

would probably be a nice addition, but the added draw to to DeRosa is that he adds righty power, which the team sorely lacks. And he does crush lefty pitching, slugged well over .500 last year vs. lefties.

It seems like Catalanotto does what Chris Carter could potentially do, but with better fielding.

I'm doing a little study on the NL East and thought I'd share an interesting little tidbit. To all of the self-loathing Mets fans/lazy 'MLB insiders' and journalistic parrots who have 1) Condemned the entire Mets organization as a joke 2) Written off this core's impressive run to date and 3) Deified the Phillies as unstoppable juggernauts w/ no chance to lose this division:

Yes, those wins are weighted towards '06-'07 and yes, the Phillies' are more recent but the fact remains that no other team in that span can even come close to the Mets total of days in first place, which should be garnering a lot more respect than it has. If only because we still have nearly the same core in place that has clearly had a lot of success and health-willing can very easily do so again in 2010.
