Gonzalez over Davis?
If the Mets could somehow pull off a trade for Adrian Gonzalez, would the community here be willing to do so if it meant blocking Ike Davis? Or is Gonzalez, and whatever prospects a trade for him would require absolutely worth it? Keep in mind that there would be no guarantee we would keep Gonzalez past 2011, as he might certainly be willing to test free agency. Seems to be a lot of support for Davis, and I'm curious how deep that runs.

I think you have to do that with an already established star.
And besides, Davis could always move to right field or whatever. However, it depends what we’re giving up to get him, more than anything. If it’s a very good deal for us, blocking Davis isn’t a big deal. If we’re giving up a good deal to get him, I’d prefer to work in other positions that seem less set…aka Holliday in LF, seeing how he would only cost money.

If Gonzalez could be had for cheap they would have to get him
It would be a great move that would help the 2010 team compete with the Phillies and Braves next season.
An interesting possibility would have Davis play RF in 2011 with Gonzalez at first. Then after the 2011 off-season they could let Gonzalez go to get the draft picks and then move Davis to 1B. Davis could probably handle playing the outfield for the next couple years, but I think eventually he will get to big to play the OF (he is currently 6-5, 195 lbs). Has anyone heard anything about Davis’ defense at both 1st and in the OF?
That said, I hope Omar doesn’t try to trade for Gonzalez because I do not trust him to make a smart trade. He should just get Holliday since he “only” costs money and a 2nd round pick.

The wrap on Davis defensively
Is that he’s a solid athlete with below average speed, but not a leadfoot. One thing I’ve heard is that scouts think his arm is a bit “wasted” at first base, since he was also a LHP in college and he has something of a cannon. But being a left hand thrower also helps with first base defense.

If you can get a solid proven All-Star caliber vet, you do it. Even if it means blocking a promising but still unknown commodity. We know how good Gonzalez is, but you never know how good Davis may or may not turn out.

Right. This exactly.

But Gonzalez has only had one all star caliber season.
Before this year he’s never had a 4 WAR season. I would like to get him, but not at what he’ll cost.

yeah
I agree with the guys here… if Gonzalez is getable, they you get him.
does SD have a good prospect waiting for 1b? I would think that if you are gonna trade for him then starting with Davis as an adequate replacement would be a great place to start.

I do NOT want the Mets to trade Ike
he can play the outfield and then slide over to first when Gonzalez is up. Davis seems like he might be our closest impact prospect, why give that up if you don’t have to?

wouldnt the point be to lock
gonzalez up for the long term?
He is young and really awesome… why would we want him to leave?
you gotta give to get.

Padres already have a 1B replacement in line
Top prospect Kyle Blanks has already spent time in the majors and is more-or-less ready to play every day. Ike Davis would not need to be included specifically.

fact is
there’s no guarantee you can lock him up…a guy that good and that young might want to test free agency, and any number of teams could swoop in and grab him
i’d still do it anyway, i just wanted to pose the question as i saw a lot of people very adamant about Ike Davis

It's still a two-year rental
If we give up 2 or 3 of our best prospects, it’s just continuing the short-sightedness that has gotten us into trouble in the first place.

Agreeing with gbaked...
…You’d have to figure Ike would be included in any Gonzalez deal.
