No Matt Holliday or Jason Bay apparently means Adrian Gonzalez
Mike Pelfrey, Ike Davis, Fernando Martinez, and Bobby Parnell or Brad Holt for Adrian Gonzalez? Not only do I see it taking more to get San Diego to hand him over, but what exactly is the point? In Davis, we seem to be getting a guy very much fitting the slugging first baseman mold, and we'll still be without power in the outfield.

Not to mention now you have Pelfreys spot
to fill in the rotation, as if we didn’t have enough rotation problems, and you’re opening more questions in the outfield by moving F-mart. And I’d feel like moving Pelfrey means they’d have to bring in Lackey so I can’t see them bringing in Holliday/Bay too.

i agree with you there
if such a deal DID require that level of return i’d happily settle for carlos pena.

i may be off base here but thats WAY too much
i feel offers like this one are severely misreading the value of cheap young players in baseball today. i mean pelfrey, davis, fmart & holt? i’d barely give 2 of those guy, let alone all 4, but maybe thats me.
i don’t want to sound like the prototypical dope who wants to give nothing and get everything but to me the issue here is that the industry has clearly shifted, valuing cost-controlled young players more than it ever has before. these are players that are years away from free agency and even arbitration. i’ve heard this, i’ve read this and most importantly i’ve seen it in some of the trades of superstars the last couple of seasons:
how else do you explain the white sox getting peavy without any elite prospects or established major leaguers? even better question, how did we get johan for that package? or look at holliday going to the A’s where they gave huston street coming off his worst season and talks of arm problems, carlos gonzalez who has since surged but at the time had had a bad ’08 and was no longer considered an elite prospect and greg smith who has always been considered a back of the rotation guy at best.
people have said “adrian gonzalez is worth more in trades because of his relatively cheap salary” but that same fact didn’t stop the phillies from acquiring cliff lee for a bunch of decent prospects but nobody elite and certainly nobody established in the majors.
the aforementioned package for gonzelez not only surpasses any of those actual deals but it blows them clear out of the water which to me indicates that we’ve got to re-evaluate what teams value and understand that before we go throwing away our entire system.

I think that package is too much
But that’s because I think adrian gonzales gets WAY overrated. There are young controlled players I’d consider that type of package for but he is definitely not one of them.
I also think it has to do with the state of our farm system/teams. If we didn’t have so many holes on the major league roster or a farm system that was a bit deeper than that deal, for another player not for Gonzales, might not be as bad. But with so many other question marks that we’d still have to fill, on top of the holes it would create, that trade just makes no sense.

I have to agree that that seems like too much to give up
I’m not sure why the author is writing off Holliday and Bay, either, in any case

Pelfrey's 2008 was almost as good as AG's typical year
so if you think Pelfrey’s 2008 is close to his true talent level and Gonzalez is going to come back to earth after his career 2009 and continue to play at his 2006-2008 level, you don’t want to give up three real prospects for that fairly minimal difference.
Isn’t Gonazalez going into his last two years of arbitration? If so he’s not going to be cheap, and assuming an extension comes with the trade you’ve made the trade in order to pay him market rates from 2012 on.

That article says Gonzalez is clearly a need for the Red Sox
huh? They have one of the top 3 all-around first basemen in baseball – if they’re just gonna get him to DH, why not get someone who’s not a good fielder that can be acquired a lot cheaper?

Well I'd assume they're thinking Youkillis would be moved to third/left field
and considering their current third base options I can see why moving somewhere there could be a need. They also lack power in their line-up I guess.

By the way
I’m still not over the fact that the Marlins traded him for Ugueth Urbina less than a week after we traded Armando Benitez (the better pitcher at the time) to the Yankees for a turd sandwich platter. Was that Phillips or Duquette?

Wow could that trade get any worse?
Let’s throw in Wright and Mejia.

Throw in some extra cash while we're at it
What, with Wright’s horrendous contract and all…
