Castillo for Snyder?

So the Mets have been trying very hard to move Luis Castillo and the DBacks have been trying to move Chris Snyder. A bad contract for a bad contract. However, everything has been complicated by a third team and Milton Bradley. First it is Lyle Overbay. Then it is Kevin Millwood, whats next?

The Mets obviously need a catcher. They want power. I've heard the Diamondbacks want a second baseman with speed and who is a veteran to lead their young infield, someone who can also get on base. Castillo fits that mold.

So I say ditch the third team and do Castillo for Snyder straight up. What do you guys think?

well um

who do we get for second base? and if your answer is Hudson, then I think you have just exchanged one bad contract at 2b for what will surely be another one

I would actually prefer Polanco

Gas prices today are a lot like a pitcher's ERA. Anything under 3 is amazing, under 4 is pretty good and anything 5 and up is something you want to avoid.

Felipe Lopez

Polanco is a Type A.

I don't think the Tigers will offer Polanco arbitration

They just added Scott Sizemore to their roster.

How much would he get if they offered it?

They’re having hella financial problems so if it’s a decent sized number I wouldn’t be shocked if they didn’t.

I'd have to look at Snyder's medical records,

otherwise it’s a blind guess. Castillo is below average, but not by much. He’s not a black hole at 2b. Is Castillo + Zaun really a worse bet bet than Snyder + $2m 2b?

Snyder was having a good 2009 through the end of May, then lost it completely. I have no idea what to expect from him.

'09 medical records

as you may know he had to have back surgery following the season. it was a microdisectomy of a herniated disc which if you read at webmd, isn’t exactly ideal for a guy who bends down for a living. i’d be worried about him going forward.

here is how his 2009 season looked as a result of the back woes:

Aug 29, 2009: Back injury, 15-day DL (retroactive to August 26).
Aug 28, 2009: Gluteus maximus, day-to-day.
Jul 28, 2009: Missed 31 games (back injury).
Jun 23, 2009: Back injury, 15-day DL.
Jun 21, 2009: Back injury, day-to-day.
Jun 20, 2009: Missed 2 games (back injury).
Jun 18, 2009: Back injury, day-to-day.

Thanks for the research, rob.

That particular procedure worries me to, for a catcher. What you posted tilts the Mets away from making the deal, imo.

thanks for looking that up

yeah, not sure about a catcher with a bunch of missed games due to back injuries

For those who voted, I asked if it was a FAIR trade, not necessarily a good one.

Who has a worse contract?

Well

Snyder was given his contract before the back problems right? If so I’d say the D-backs just got unlucky, where as everyone but Omar new the Castillo contract was bad before it was signed.

by Gina on Nov 21, 2009 1:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If not for his back problems I would say yes

But I’d have to know more about his long-term prospects, since moving Castillo means having to pay someone else to play second base it would depend on whether we’d actually get use out of Snyder.

How about if the Dbacks threw in a B level prospect?

Would that be too unrealistic?

let's do it

castillo 6M/yr /snyder 2M/yr and you could platoon snyder with thole / it’s a no brainer
Now ollie for pierre and half our problems are solved

$4.75 million this year

$5.75 million next, and a club option for $6.75 million in 2012.

Do you honestly think the Dodgers would trade Pierre for Ollie?

by Bobby Baseball on Nov 21, 2009 6:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

let's not do it

the d’backs are about as stupid as the mets; he gets 4.75M in 10’ and 5.75M in 2011/I think i liked the millwood trade better

by bob c on Nov 21, 2009 5:50 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I'm not sure.....

But I guess if they’re so close I think it’s fair.
