...when you could get a DH to play left field?

Omar is a perfectionist

Just when you think his ideas can’t get worse, he comes up with something that is mystifying in it’s stupidity.

This is a perfect example. Jack Cust is an incredibly horrible outfielder and his hitting isn’t even that good anymore.

He has grission

not true

Nobody who plays for the Oakland Computers has grission. That’s why they never won a World Series under Beane.

Somehow, a chain of events unfolded that put Steve Phillips in a professional broadcast booth Sunday night so he could rip Carlos Beltran. Try to explain that in any other terms.

But...He's Jack Cust. Look at him.

The A’s don’t have grission, though, very true. Billy Beane tries to stick to those darned quantifiable stats and stuff…

Wow, that is awful, awful, awful defense

Cust seems to be, in all respects, a slightly older (by 10 months), much worse version of Adam Dunn. Look at this:

UZR/150 in LF: Cust -18.9, Dunn -12.4
Batting average: Cust .239, Dunn .249
OBP: Cust .374, Dunn .383
SLG: Cust .455, Dunn .520
OPS: Cust .829, Dunn .903
BB%: Cust 17.8%, Dunn 17.1%
K%: Cust 39.5%, Dunn 32.4%
HR/FB: Cust 24.7%, Dunn 22.4%
ISO: Cust .216, Dunn .270

They’re practically the same player, except that Dunn is significantly better, and that the Mets could have had him last winter without giving up any players. (Or even any draft picks? Is my recollection right that the Diamondbacks didn’t even offer him arbitration?)

Now, Cust’s inadequacy as compared to Dunn isn’t a reason not to trade for Cust; Dunn is obviously a dead issue. The fact that Cust isn’t a very good baseball player (5/3/1 WAR projection is 1.53) is a reason not to trade for Cust. But if we didn’t want a good “unathletic masher” type when one was eminently available, why do we want a bad one now?

wonder if he could handle 1b, even though he's never played there

Thats the only scenario I can think of where this would make any sense at all. It would be the power bat we need at first, and he’d likely be cheap and probably easy to sign to a short term deal leaving room for Ike. I’m not saying I want this to happen but its the only way i can even fathom them wanting to sign Cust.

except with terrible, terrible defense.

again I don't advocate this choice

its just the closest to logic i can put on the Mets ever wanting this guy, thinking from their perspective.

He'd make an excellent bench piece/pinch hitter

If he’s non-tendered I’d definately be interested, but not at 3 million plus.

Bill James projects him for a .375 wOBA, but

his is an absolutely horrible fielder. Maybe if he trained hard he could become a below average 1B defensively.

I'd rather go with Murphy/Evans

Cust will put up an OPS of around 830 with presumably brutal defense. Adjusting their major league PAs for handedness and giving them a positive nudge for age a Murphy/Evans platoon is a very decent bet to put up an OPS around 800 with (Murphy’s) above average D. And I’ll bet too that their upside is significantly higher than Cust’s.

and fwiw

Evans was an awesome first basemen according to total zone in the minors

Even better!

After hearing some smart projections on this site wrt to Evans v LHP, and knowing Murphy’s defense is good, I’ve become convinced that 1b is about last on the list of positions the Mets need to upgrade this offseason.

I don’t know if it would cause contractual problems but D does seem like the kind of thing a FO could tell a young player to focus on in the offseason, even to the point of offering to hire a personal coach.

Live every week like it's Shark Week.

the number one issue facing the Mets is finding that one guy who’s going to say "get on my shoulders and ride me to the championship."

Cust did have a .393 wOBA in 2007

That’s pretty high upside

"What was my greatest fear in the past is now upon us. Armed with their "advanced metrics" and clutching their spread sheets, the new-age baseball voters have officially taken over the sport"

You're right.

I missed that. Cust could pull a 900 OPS out of his hat in 2010.

by SeanSchirmer on Nov 23, 2009 8:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This is not possible

UZR/150 in LF: Cust -18.9, Dunn -12.4

The rating goes from as high as +10 to a low of Adam Dunn. Surely no one is worse than the big donkey! How is it possible to be worse than the worst?
