The Inevitable, Alex Cora Close to Resigning
Apparently he's getting his $2 million, once again guaranteed, this time with some type of vesting option.

Aah the infamous vesting option. My guess:
Playing in 45 games in 2010 activates a $17.5 million dollar option in 2011.
I loathe Omar Minaya. This right here is a horrible move. He can’t hit, he can’t field, he can’t run, so why is he back. Passes over better options for less money, how does this guy have a job?
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
My guess
If Frankie Rodriguez finishes 50 games in 2010 and is declared healthy by team doctors, Alex Cora gets $17.5 mil next year.

to be fair
i don’t think cora is that bad. were there better/more economical options out there? yes definitely, adam everett was a personal favorite and i’d even had taken vizquel at nearly half cora’s price.
but i don’t know if i’d characterize him as completely useless. i mean he hit as well as could have been expected until he really became overexposed, his defense wasn’t great but at short it was actually a positive and as far as backup MI go speed isn’t a top priority IMO. then of course theres the intangible stuff which i know people hate to hear but does have its value, especially on a team as seemingly rudderless as this one.

I just can't justify this in any way.
They paid Alex Cora 2 million dollars coming off of a season when he was worth around 3. Okay. Then they pay him 2 million again after he provides no value at all? I just feel sad.

I can't believe this. Strike one Minaya.
Wait, it’s more like strike 45. But for this offseason, you’ve already made a mistake. Mooooooooooron.

How disappointing
If only because I was hoping that $2 million would go towards the Bengie Molina Fund. Blast!

Oh come on, guys....
give Cora a break…..someone has to play SS when that loser Reyes blows out ( insert body part here ).
I think this move is gangsta.
I was shocked
even the Metsblog commenters know this is a terrible deal

Maybe we'll get lucky
and he’ll get a more serious injury that even his grit can’t overcome with homemade casts.
I think someone may have the term confused....
maybe he’s getting a vest with his number so he can look more grissiony / gangsta.

I don't get it, either. Where was the market for Cora?
Who was going to pay him $2m, such that we needed to top that w an option?

I kind of like Cora on the bench but that’s way too much money. No other team would offer him close to that. Why is Omar bidding against himself again?
I'm not entirely sure
but I think Omar may have moonlighted as W’s economic adviser the past few years.

you wouldn’t want to offend anyone. Cora might throw a tantrum if you offer him half as much as last year, (but twice as much as anyone else would give him.)

Why Red Sox > Mets
“Though the Red Sox are still in the market for a shortstop, they did not express interest in bringing Cora back to Boston.”
2 years ago he stopped being a player the RSox wanted
and it’s not like he’s become a better player since

What does Omar see in Cora?
I mean, okay, there are a lot worse people out there that he could possibly sign, sure, but $2 million dollars? We already learned last season that he’s not worth $2 million dollars. He’s going to be older next season, and play less (if all goes according to plan). What’s going on? Does Cora know magic or something, because he’s obviously got Minaya charmed.

Or in AA terms, “Cora has lobby Omar to give him another above-market-rate contract”.

Every year a team needs to put money into replacement level players
just to fill AAA with reliable veterans in case of big league emergency. But we don’t need to spend $2 million on any one of those players and we probably don’t need to waste a spot on the 25 man either! Oops!
I could probably name about 50 players better than Cora
but I’m too lazy too

In my AAOP
I budgeted $750,000 for him. Maybe that was too generous, but I don’t see why he wouldn’t sign for that. No one else would pay it.
i'm arguing with some dude on another forum and i said that cora sucks
this guy is saying i’m wrong
someone give me some numbers to prove me right
A "Zeile" for avoiding outs
this was the guy's post
How does he suck? He’s fine as a utility player and you saying that clubhouse presence can’t make up for the fact that he “kinda sucks” is just flat out wrong IMO. Look at Julio Franco in 06, remember when Beltran didn’t want to give a curtain call and Franco convinced him to? That very possibly could have changed Beltran career as a Met. Clubhouse presence is a lot more important than you think….
A "Zeile" for avoiding outs
he's citing Julio Franco as his proof that Cora doesn't suck?
that pretty much explains it all

I don't think one curtain call
changed Beltran’s career as a Met. His career changed when he was too much of a pussy to take the bat of the shoulder. Derek Jeter or any other grissiony player would’ve fucking swung.

i said this
I’d rather have a better baseball player than a player who is supposedly “better in the clubhouse”. We could have had much better players for cheaper (Adam Everett and others).
Besides that, Cora was a poor fielder and hitter and a mediocre runner last season. Now consider the fact that he is aging and coming off of surgery. Doesn’t make me feel too confident about him this year either.
A "Zeile" for avoiding outs
I have this vision of impending disaster
where Omar follows up his 2 mil to Cora with like 3/30 to Bengie Molina. God I hate this front office.
and then he offers 4/52
to Livan.

More Cora details from Rosenthal...
Cora can earn an additional $1 million in performance bonuses: $250,000 each for 80, 90, 100 and 110 starts. There is a $2 million option for 2011 that becomes guaranteed if he has about 80 starts next season.
No chance he starts 80 games again. Essentially a one-year, $2 mil deal.
by The 'Ropolitans on Nov 30, 2009 5:32 PM EST reply actions
So not only did we give Alex Cora 2 million guaranteed,
but we also gave him motive to Kathy Bates’ Reyes’ legs.

Same old
This is what Omar Minaya does. He spends too much money on small roles like backup IF, middle relievers, etc. They could get comparable production out of this spot for the league minimum, yet he wastes that extra ~$1.5M for Cora. That $1.5M could be used on an extra bullpen arm, another bench player to add depth, put towards a contract offer for Holliday or Lackey, etc. It’s stunning how Omar doesn’t get this.

I think the problem is
He decides how much he thinks a player is worth and won’t budge from that number, so while it seems like the extra 2 million we spent on Redding/Cora last year was the difference between Lowe and Perez, it wouldn’t have made a difference because Omar likely had a ball park of what he was willing to pay and wasn’t going to go above or below that regardless of extra funds.
At least Omar seems to be picking up some catching depth.
Word is the Mets got Chris Coste, who’s not bad at all, and that Omar’s looking at Barajas, too.
