aaop: Winning team
This is a winning team, But I think we could even do better if we could trade for a few players. I would put up for trade Francoeur not because he's not good just because there might be a lot of interest and I like Pagan in RF, I would also try to trade 1 of either Maine or Pelfrey and Green. Try to get some power on the bench and depth in the Pen. For now this is what I got.
1B Murphy - 400,000 - He's cheap and can give us a good full year while we wait for Ike. IF you can get some one cheap to platoon fine.
2B Castillo - 6.25 mil - He won the spot in 2009, he has a high OBP behind Reyes this is a plus. He has speed and descent defense lets concentrate on the positions we really need.
SS Reyes - 9.35 mil - Lets hope his healthy.
3B Wright - 10.25 mil - Lets look for the power from 2008.
C Molina - 5.5 mil - Why? here is why. His got power, we can get a full year of production from him, he's a veteran and hopefully we can get him for about 5.5 for 1 year. Just enough time for Thole to get ready
LF Matt Holiday - 18 mil - We need him! He's a franchise player. I say 95 mil for 5 years or 108 mil for 6 years. If we can't get Matt we have to get Bay for less of course.
CF Beltran - 18.5 mil - His the best player on the field.
RF Pagan (only if we sign Matt or Bay)- 700,000 - He can hit, very good speed and good defense and I would also sign chavez to a 2 year 2 mil contract as our 4th OF. But I don't think this will happen, it would save some money. If this is viable I would trade francoeur for a good catcher or a SU reliever. If not we keep Francoeur he has power and did play good for the mets.
Bench
OF Reed - 400,000 - Good defense
IF Cora - 2 mil - It looks like that is what they are going to pay him but I would have given him 1.5 mil because fo the injury
C Santos - 400,000
OF Chavez - 1 mil - If his healthy he is good and I am sure everyone was sad when he left. Bring him back.
IF Miguel Cairo - 750,000 - He can play 1B and 3B which is highly needed and we can get him for 1 mil or less. If not we stay with Evens
Starting Pitcher
1 Santana - 21 mil
2 Pineiro - 8.5 mil per 2 years - We can not ignore his 2009 performance. He gave up very few walks and HR's, in citifield he should be great. If he asks for too much money try to get sheets or Harden for a 1 or 2 year deal if healthy, if not Penny is a very dependable pitcher and pitched a ERA of 2.75 in LA
3 Wolf - 7 mil per 3 year - Mr. consistency, we should have gotten him last year over Perez but we have another chance.
4 Pelfrey - 400,000. - I feel that maine is a much better pitcher then pelfrey but we save money with Pelfrey. But the mets should try and trade one or the other for a C, 1B or a couple or relievers
5 Perez - 12 mil - What choose do we have, thanks to Omar we are stuck with him.
The Pen
CL K-Rod - 11 mill
SU Affeldt LHP - 4 mil - From SF via trade Francoeur and a minor league C or Santos for J. Affeldt LH and B. Medders RH. SF needs a RF with some power and a catcher so this can be done.
LHS Feliciano - 2.5 mil
RH Strokes - 750,000
RHS B. Medders - 475,000 - Good against RH batters
RH Green - 500,000 - Not impress with him would try to trade if posible
LM Parnell - 400,000 - He can pitch you a good 3 innings might be future SU man
2010 payroll $142,025,000
Line up
Reyes
Castillo
Holliday
Beltran
Wright
Pagan
Molina
Murphy

I enjoyed that mis-spelling
of our 4th catcher/first five-eighth Nick Evans.
the number one issue facing the Mets is finding that one guy who’s going to say "get on my shoulders and ride me to the championship."
I'm a big fan of our new RH reliever Strokes

I'm going to have mine ready for opening day.
No sooner than that, though.

Molina for 5.5 million
I just gagged a little bit.. Pineiro and Wolf? Why not one and them and one of the following: Harden/Sheets/Bedard…since Pineiro and Wolf will probably end up being the same type of signing (i.e. bad contract)
Injury prone
I do think Harden and Sheets are better but we just got though a injury full season and I am looking for consistency and quality but if they are healthy I say go get one of them.

We need 2 solid starters in 2010, not more injury risks.
Our top five starters threw a combined total of 524 innings in 2009. That’s barely one hundred innings per starter. That’s a rotation in need of serious help.
ummm this is kind of 3 weeks late

its not supposed to be a prediction of what is going to happen
its what you would do.

i just threw up in my mouth
not a little… a considerable amount…. probably in the gallon range. If you’re going for realistic however, probably accurate as sad as that makes me.

I like the overall approach
Don’t think you’ll go too wrong with Holliday and shoring up the rotation with one or both of Pineiro and Wolf. And the Francoeur for Affeldt suggestion was reasonably creative. Not sure SF goes for it, but it’s not bad, and I’d certainly would like that deal.
My one complaint though, I really hate that bench. Cora is the only one there I like, and of course he will get overpaid.
Luis Castillo has "descent defense"
Castillo’s defense is not descent, it is not even decent. Have you ever seen his UZR? Castillo is one of the worst defenders in the league for all second basemen!
Gas prices today are a lot like a pitcher's ERA. Anything under 3 is amazing, under 4 is pretty good and anything 5 and up is something you want to avoid.
better option
No one is going to trade for him,do you have a better option without braking the bank and losing 6.25 mil. We got to work with the real need areas, like Power, starters, bullpen, catcher, 1B and then 2B in that order.
Bench
You are right I did not work on the bench too hard. I have about 3 mil I would spend on the bench but I would really love to trade Maine or Pelfrey for some good backup players or starter and move around some players.
Why would you trade a 26 year old pitcher
who has one of the best ground ball percentages for a backup?
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
Whats so great about pelfrey
4 seasons and only one under 5.03 era and a record of 23 W and 32 L, also he gives up a lot of hits your need any more reasons. And I said some meaning more then one and/or a starter.

Okay
Win Loss record is beyond meaningless. Bunt hit percentage is a better indicator of a pitchers performance than Win Loss record. Regarding Hits and ERA, those are representative of the team, specifically the defense, even more specifically for Pelfrey, the infield defense. As I said before he’s a ground ball pitcher, one of the best in the league at getting the ball on the ground, so bad defense kills him. Wright was terrible in the field last year, Reyes was out so Cora played most of the games and he has terrible range, and Castillo was one of the worst second basemen in baseball. Those three guys didn’t get to the ground balls Pelfrey was producing, so they became hits, which turned into runs. Wright should be better next year, Reyes back will improve shortstop defense, and should we replace Castillo with Polanco or Lopez, Pelfrey will be a solid pitcher. Any team that has a great infield defense would make Pelfrey look like a great pitcher. The Mets had a horrible infield so he looked bad.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
Jeez, lighten up, gang. It may not be perfect but he tried, and there are some novel ideas here.

At least there's been worse ones.
It could have been worse; he could have decided to trade Wright and his bloated contract.

my biggest complaint with this plan is its mostly realistic
and that saddens me greatly. We will probably see something that very closely resembles this lineup when the offseason is done.

Realistic
I was going for realistic, my mistake did not realize it was fantasy roster.
You also wrote, "His got power" as an actual phrase of an actual sentence.

Pitchers are starting to disappear Pineiro is still out there so lets get him we still need a second starter and since wolf is gone I would go after Marquez we should be able to get both for much less (13 to 15 mil) then what Lackey went for and lets leave Molina out use that money to get Delgado and go after Holiday we need the power.
