This is why I hate baseball fans
This guy proposes two trades where we ridiculously overpay for Adrian Gonzalez and give up Pelfrey and Ike Davis for Seth Smith and Jorge de la Rosa, a trade that makes no sense for either team. I mean, do people realize Adrian Gonzalez just had his first great season? I like him as a player, but the way people talk about him you'd think he had been like Miguel Cabrera for the past four years. No way in hell do I give up two ~20 year old prospects in AAA (Mejia will probably start there, right?) who both happen to be top 50, if not 30, prospects in all of baseball for a 27 year old with 1 season of +4 WAR.

This is why I registered here, having no clue about anything Sabermetrics.
The people here have a clue.
Heh, the article said that Fernando Martinez is a fizzled prospect who didn’t “pan out”.

I think you might be overvaluing your prospects here

Oh yeah, I overreated no doubt, this article was a tipping point in a series of events.
But no way is Gonzalez worth Fernando and Mejia, he is not that good. He had a great year this year, no doubt, spectacular, but what makes you think he will repeat it? Maybe this was his breakout season, but I’m not trading my top two prospects for a guy who was worth less than Adrian Beltre, Dan Uggla, Placido Polanco, Mike Cameron and others from 06-08. This Gonzalez hype is an overreaction itself to one great year. And you don’t think Fernando and Mejia are top 50 prospects?

I think Fernando and Meija are excellent prospects
However, even as top 50 hitting prospects, their expected surplus value is about 46 million over the next 6 years.
Gonzolez, even if he’s being overvalued by his last really good season, is at least a 4-5 WAR player going forward.
by vivaelpujols on Nov 4, 2009 7:31 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Right
But whats the difference in surplus value? Gonzo costs about $10 mil over the next two years. Even if you assume he’s worth $20 mil in each of those seasons, you pay $10 mil for $40 mil of production. So his surplus value is $30 mil. Beyond that, assuming Gonzo does produce at that level for the next two years, due to length, its tough to imagine his surplus value is going to be too great even with a contract extension, so thats still a $16 million difference in surplus value.

Martinez Mejia and Havens, not to mention Pagan, for GonzalezEckstein hardly sounds like overvaluing anyone on our side.

Yeah, lets trade our starting second baseman,
our 4th if not starting right fielder, our top outfield prospect, and one of our best pitchers for Adrian Gonzalez and fucking Eckstein. Eckstein is not a good backup….Eckstein is not good at all.

the first way sounded more like something Omar would say

yeah
The Gonzalez deal is ridiculous… 6 or 7 players for Gonzalez and Eckstein is crazy, especially considering we’d be trading two starters away as well as their minor league counterparts.. no thanks.
I actually don’t mind the Colorado deal too much. It’s just not going to happen, but Seth Smith is awesome.
ain't had enough...

i'm also a fan of Smith
but i dont like either trade as proposed there.

Whoa, Eckstein too?
Eckstein would combine with Francoeur and Cora to give the 2010 Mets the dirtiest uniforms around, and that’s good for something like 30 wins.

Wow, that's all kinds of foolish.
I mean those trades make the Putz deal look even-handed. When Omar makes them, will he also have to bend over and shout, “Thank you sir may I have another?”

Well....it is called "Bleacher Report"
which might explain the logic.

hahahaha
you really confused me by saying “Seth Green” instead of “Seth Smith”. he’s a pretty good hitter, 2.8 WAR in less than 400 PA this season, factoring in good defense in LF. .383 wOBA in 2009. not sure why the Rockies would deal him though.

My bad
Seth Green is awesome though. Robot Chicken is hilarious. I’ll edit it now.

Seth Green would be good coming out of the bullpen.

Lots of better than, say, Elmer Dessens.
But to Dessens’ credit, he will eventually have that auto repair row named after him.

The best part is all the comments say that the Gonzalez trade is lopsided...
in the Mets favor.
