MLBTR Top 50 Free Agents List
Mets are projected to get the #1 free agent, Matt Holliday, along with Randy Wolf and Brad Penny. Any scenario in which we end up with Holliday is a win. But besides that, any thoughts on these projections? Anyone else interesting on this list that you think we should pick up?

FWIW, last year they called us getting KRod, their #4 free agent.

Wolf
I wouldn’t touch 3 years/$30 million. I’d rather give Harden $10 million for one year.

I agree
Short term deals are better, and Harden has a good chance to be better if healthy. I think I would also go with Pinero over Wolf. Penny would be a good pick-up, but it all depends on the price. What do you think Penny would get?

penny gets 1 yr/$3-5M
any more than that and i’d be very surprised. he got 1yr/$5M last year and while he was serviceable (4.46 fip over 176 ip), his 4.88 era (not to mention released by the sox) won’t do him any favors at the negotiating table.

I don’t think Lackey is going to the Yankees. They have no reason to sign him. They already have a glut of starting pitching, even if Pettitte moves on, with Sabathia, Burnett, Wang, Chamberlein, and Hughes, and less-than-impressive back of the rotation guys like Kennedy, Igawa…
Randy Wolf would have been nice last season, but I don’t think it’d be wise to pick him up, with that kind of contract. Wolf has been a ‘meh’ pitcher for most of his career, and last season was a “break-out” season that he probably can’t duplicate. Giving him a 3 year/$30 million dollar contract is a lot like giving Oliver Perez his 3 year/$36 million dollar contract.
Adam LaRoche, I have a feeling the Braves are going to hang on to him. With Davis on the move shortly, I’m willing to take my chances with Murphy/Evans/Tatis, and save our money.
Brad Penny, he had a down year in an up-and-down career. I wouldn’t bother perusing him, though, because teams who are more desperate for decent pitching, like the Brewers, probably will be willing to jack up his price to make sure they net him.
Jason Marquis, I hope we don’t go after. He’s a back-of-the-rotation kinda guy, and we have plenty of those. That’s nice that he’s from here, and wants to play for us, but that ship has passed. We could have gotten him last season for virtually nothing (look at what the Rockies gave the Cubs in exchange for him. They were just trying to make room in their rotation, because the Peavy trade seemed imminent at that time), so why sign him off a career year?

while I agree that I'm not big on Wolf
I disagree with one thing: “Giving him a 3 year/$30 million dollar contract is a lot like giving Oliver Perez his 3 year/$36 million dollar contract.”
At least Wolf is actually coming off of a good season. Ollie came off a season in which he had regressed into a below average pitcher and we gave him that contract. Just inexcusable.

Wolf is coming off of a good season, possibly his best.
That translates into Omar thinking that he’s always going to produce those kinds of numbers, which means he’ll think he’ll be getting a bargain by giving him a contract that he really isn’t worth.
And, yeah, I forgot about Perez’ meh season last year, replacing it instead with his decent one in 2007.

like I said
not disagreeing on Wolf. Just saying it would be way way way way way more defensible than the Ollie contract.

i disagree about the yankees
while i don’t know if i’d say its definitely going to happen, i could see them making a push for lackey especially since the idea of breaking the bank for holliday seems very unlikely to me w/ their still crowded OF. in fact, i hope they do get lackey because i sure as hell don’t want him.
a lot of those guys you mentioned are definitely not set in stone SP options for the yankees going forward. it sounds like joba is going back to the pen, wang will probably get non-tendered and even if he doesn’t they’re not counting on him to be anything, same w/ hughes after his stints in the rotation. kennedy and especially igawa are non-factors and if pettitte retires, they’re down to only 2 guys they really trust, and how much can you trust burnett? i think they’d love to have a cc, lackey, burnett top 3 and continue the same model they used in the playoffs this year.

Why would the Yankees not use those starters?
Sabathia, obviously, is their ace, and they’re paying him like it. Burnett, it’s not like they’re paying him chump change, and, for all intents and purposes, he performed decently enough last season. Wang, if Cashman gets rid of him, he might be stupider than Omar, even with his injuries (but, their loss is our gain, I would hope). Pettitte, now I’ve heard that he’s leaning towards returning, and like Burnett, he performed admirably enough to not be snubbed (and with him, there’s the sentimental value as well). Joba, I’m going to assume that they’re not going to put him in the bullpen because they’re been grooming him for two years now to be a starter in the Major Leagues. If they do, Hughes is already a starter, who has had some success in the Major Leagues as a starter. And behind them, they still have internal options to choose from that don’t cost nothing.
These are the Yankees, but they do have a limit somewhere. Especially after breaking the bank last season.

Wolf has been pretty consistent with FIP and kind of with tRA
its just his ERA that changed a lot this season. And he’s better than Oli.

no Wolf please, just have SANTANA<<PELFREY<<<MAINE<<<PICK UP Lackey
and Pavano or Harden instead if $$$$$ available……put niese and nieve in bullpen…..trade oliver perez for anything, luis castillo must go, GET: POLANCO< and
maybe (JOHNSON from braves ,if not tendered) also sign either SORIANO< GONZALEZ
or if management has the money go for other set up man for big bucks 3years @ 6million. AN ABSOLUTE MUST get PENA 1B from rays >>>OMAR get busy offer them
PARNELL and/ or TEJADA // plus another minor leaguer…PENA free agent to be
rental….Barajas or other 1 year stop gap catcher…BYRD from texas (F/A) 2 yrs 11 m..if
budget allows offer HOLLIDaY 6 years 101 and not anymore…..unlikely since the 25-30
players listed will cost about 150 million…the METS must spend around this number to compete in 2010 an beyond until minor leaguers come up.. budget could be slightly reduced thereafter..
only trade I’LL ADVOCATE is for PENA or maybe Berkman of the astros…..DO NOT
trade the whole farm system for the likes of JJ PUTZ>>>PLEASE!!!!!!

Holliday would be great, past that I'd like Lackey of course, but barring that I'd take Harden.
I vote no on Penny. Also, am I the only one who feels like Garland will be a Met by the end of this offseason? I’ve just got a feeling they’ll sign him because he’s an “inning eater”.

I would be happy if this was our off-sseason
just replace Penny with Harden. And what’s with all the Mets hate on MLBTR they are going off like the Mets just won the WS 5 years in a row and our fans were dicks about it

it's pretty crazy how much vitriol there is towards the Mets and their fans
considering they haven’t won a World Series in 23 years. It doesn’t add up.

In "their" defense, when I was browsing the site yestarday, I did see a clueless douchy Mets fan.
One of those types who are like, “Lol, atlanta sucks chicken eggs!!1 They got nohting and atlanta is a gay place to b. There fans need to not root for a team that sucks. The nets are gonna mop the floor with the AL East next year. Hosay Rayes is going to hit 50 HR and steal 150 bases”.
Overall, though, it think it’s general “penis envy”. They all wish they had a club as inept as ours.
