Amazin' Avenue opinion on Left Field for 2010
I'm working on a FanPost for left field options and some that may be undervalued, and thought it might be useful and interesting to include the opinions of the community (I wish we could add polls as a FanShot option). I also feel that this particular position will be very important in how we approach the offseason, as there are likely to be good options on both the free agent market and trade front. We've already had a discussion on how we want to address left field, but several deals have been made and contracts extended since then. I've added several guys that can also play CF, so if your preference is to see Beltran in LF and a new CF please assume that is taken into account. If you vote for "Other", please note who that is in the comments section. Thanks for the help.

What would the cost be for Cameron and Granderson?

Cameron is a free agent.
Granderson has a big contract that Detroit is supposedly willing to move, but he’d likely cost a few decent prospects.

I'd love it if we could somehow bring in Granderson at a reasonable cost.
He’s a good, solid player, and he also has the personality/grission that everyone wants. Plus, he seems like a genuinely cool guy.

I know Cameron is a FA
I was just looking for a price range. Sorry if that sounded mean.

cameron
he’s making about $10M/yr at this point and he just came off a 1yr deal w/ an option (that was picked up before ‘09). i figure he’s expecting right about the same, maybe 2 guaranteed seasons for about $20M.
he’s worth that and more and should really have been garnering 3-4 year offers rather than just 1-2 yr deals (aaron rowand got 5, even eric byrnes got 3) but unfortunately for cam he’s always been one of the underrated players in the game since most people A. don’t value defense properly and B. view 150+ strikeouts as a scarlet letter, regardless of the rest of your game

did anybody actually think TB was going to drop crawford's option?
well the answer is yes because i kept hearing people say “sign crawford if TB lets him go”. yeah and if st louis declines pujols 2011 option we can sign him next winter!
on the bright side, they did let gregg zaun go so he’s suddenly right in the mix of potential catchers. that probably also means that theres no chance dioner navarro will be ton-tendered.

Indeed,
because he’s the one signing that improves the Mets the most in 2010 and helps maintain a core of stars past 2011.
LF does depend on whether Beltran can hold up for another two years in CF. If there’s some doubt, or if it substantially improves his chances of staying in the lineup, I’d be happy to have Cameron at something like 2/20 in CF and move Beltran to LF. Come to think of it, for the money and if Beltran in CF is an injury risk I’d rather have Holliday in LF, Beltran in RF, and Pagan in CF.
But I don’t suppose Omar is going to nontender Francouer…

If they could get Granderson
Without giving up an arm and a leg i’d want him.. he’s a great player and seems like a classy guy.

Granderson and Crawford are nice players and stuff
But Holliday only costs $$$$$$$$$ and a 2nd round pick. Granderson and Crawford will most likely cost elite prospects plus $$$$$$$$ for an extension.

Granderson
is signed until 2012 with a club option for 2013. He’s due to make $5.5M next year, $8.25M in 2011, $10M in 2012, and the 2013 option is $13M with a $2M buyout. (source) Honestly, that seems reasonable. Even if you discard his absurdly awesome 2007 as an aberration, he’s been worth 3.9 WAR in 2006, 3.8 WAR in 2008, 3.4 WAR in 2009. (Victimized by BABIP this year; went from .317 in 2008 to .276 in 2009 even though his LD% actually went up from 19.1% to 21.2%.) Fangraphs has him as worth $14.3M in 2006, $17.0M in 2008, $15.2M in 2009. In other words, his contract is expensive, yes, but not at all out of line with the value he provides on the field. Plus he seems a solid bet to get his offensive numbers back up at least to where they were in 2008, albeit probably not to where they were in 2007. And, he can play above-average defense anywhere in the outfield.
In other words, I can’t figure why Detroit would want to move him, even in view of his contract, but if they do, I’d certainly want the Mets to at least look into what he might cost.
