Catcher Swap Complete -- Phillies sign Schneider
According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Phillies have agreed to terms with free agent catcher Brian Schneider.
Schneider will serve as backup to Carlos Ruiz in Philadelphia. The 33-year-old hit .218/.292/.335 with three homers and 24 RBI over 194 plate appearances in 2009. He is a .251/.323/.374 career hitter.

Prediction:
At some point during 2010, Brian Schneider gives at least one interview where he discusses the difference between the superior, winning, gritty atmosphere in Philly and the losing, unclutch loserness of the Mets.

Or before that.
However, he not only wanted the chance to play for a contending team, but the team he grew up rooting for as a kid, Mike Schneider said.

Too innocuous.
I’m thinking it’ll be more along the lines of:
“Well, you know, Mike, I’ve never felt better going into a season. I’m in the best shape of my life and I’m in a clubhouse where the guys just know how to do things right. You can really feel the difference here with this ballclub. From my first day of Spring Training I could just feel something different, like everyone here just has this amazing, gritty aura that projects winning. This team embodies winning baseball, which is more than I can say for those losers in Flushing. The Mets treat a winning attitude like the AIDS virus: they’d rather not catch it.”

Schneider is not at all awful
Though it isn’t clear why a two-year guaranteed deal was necessary here. I guess if the money is low enough (like $1 million per) it’s defensible.

Schneider's camp inferred in the article that other teams would have been willing to make him a starter
so I assune maybe the Phills needed to sweeten their offer. He did have a number of pretty big hits against them in 08.

Rush is awesome
Led Zeppelin is the second greatest band of all time, (Yeah, I said they’re better than the Stones. What, you gonna do?), but Rush is still great. Tom Sawyer, Limelight, 2112, La Villa Strangiato, and another 20 or so great songs.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
Led Zeppelin is probably the third or fourth greatest. The Beatles have to be number one, just because they're the Beatles, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience had Jimi Hendrix
I just don’t like Rush. Like I said, they’re a Canadian version of Zeppelin that isn’t as good as Zeppelin, but people like to insist that they are.

I wasn't implying that
Zeppelin is on another level from most bands. I think Rush is great, and it’s a travesty they’re not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but they aren’t anywhere near Zeppelin.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
Rush isn't better than Zeppelin
but they’re still a great band. And as a bassist i’m forbidden from speaking ill of Geddy Lee
by KeithsMoustache on Dec 1, 2009 2:53 PM EST up reply actions
Geddy
Geddy, his brother and his son are all in my fantasy baseball league. Geddy won several years in a row. His brother won last year. I managed to squeak by his son this year and then beat Geddy in our playoff format. Took me 20 years but I finally beat him. If this doesn’t hurt his cred as a rocker (any more than saying he plays fantasy baseball), I will add an extremely nice person.
Geddy Lee is awesome
definitely one of the best bassists of all time, and though many don’t like his voice, I think he’s a great lead singer as well.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
I'm gonna get flamed for this
but I think Zeppelin is overrated. They’re definitely not a bad band, but with the exception of Stairway, they don’t have anything that I love listening to. Maybe on a technical level they are great (I don’t play any instruments, but I know people who do say that Zep is the greatest), but their music just isn’t all that enjoyable for me.
Give me the Stones or the Who anyday over them. And the Beatles are the tops.

I prefer Robert Plant's solo work/acoustics over Led Zep myself.
A lot of people didn’t like when he began experimenting with and having his music influenced by Arabic/North African music, but that’s Plant at his best right there.

Beatles are a bit overrated
In a sort of Derek Jeter way. They’re clearly great, just not as super-awesome as everybody makes them out to be.
Besides, the greatest band of all-time is clearly Metallica (pre- and post-Bob Rock).
LMAO
Beatles overrated? Metallica pretty much sucks ass.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
i'm going to assume that metallica comment was sarcastic for the sake of my sanity
I’m really not a huge Beatles fan, but they revolutionized music so I can’t take anything away from what they’ve accomplished. They may not be the best band ever, but they’re certainly one of the most important regardless of what you think of their music.
by KeithsMoustache on Dec 1, 2009 2:57 PM EST up reply actions
No sarcasm intended
I rate them right up there with the Stones, Zeppelin, and Floyd. Sorry, I have odd musical tastes – I also listen to Beethoven and Bach, so, yeah, I might not be in accord with what others think.
And while I appreciate that the Beatles were innovative, I simply don’t think they’re music is as good as the other bands from their generation. I might have a different perspective if I grew up in the 60s, but to me they’re good – just not the best.
Deep Purple is great
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
Beethohven's 9th second movement>>>>>>>
But no way in hell is Metallica even close to the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Floyd, etc., etc. (I could probably name another 50 bands better than Metallica)
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
I dunno
When you put Paul’s bass playing into context with the times, it was pretty revolutionary for that style of music. From a strictly technical perspective, that and the awesome vocal harmonies are always what made the Beatles so special to me.

i'm not knocking Metallica
but they’re not quite in the same pantheon as Led Zeppelin, the stones, etc… I’m a fan of earlier metallica myself, although anything after the Black Album was pretty weak for the most part.
And again I agree the Beatles weren’t the best band of their era, but i do think they’re the most influential when it comes to any music after that era.

i think everyone has the same reaction to nickelback. they hear one radio hit and think, “hmm, this is pretty good.” then, they’ll listen to one or two other songs and think, “not bad”. then, they’ll listen to a couple more songs…and slowly it hits them…its the exact same song.

Jay-z? kanye?
just no. Like really no. They suck. Jay-z can rap to save his life. Em Biggie (a bit overrated but still great) Pac sure, but Kayne and Jay-Z really are just terrible. Jigga had like two good songs off reasonable doubt, but the rest is just god awful. I’m sure their not his lyrics because he either steals them or has ghostwriters, but he has no flow and his voice is annoying as hell. And just one quick point about the whole thing that he doesn’t write lyrics down, if you ever go back and listen to his 7 minute freestyle with Big L, two things are apparent, he steals everything like L’s style when he speeds up his lyrics, and two, that no way can jay spit off the top of his head. He mumbles through almost the entire second verse of freestyle. It’s embarrassing really

Black Album had one good song, Moment of Clarity
and the Blueprint had two good verses, both Em’s. And if you listen to the original version of ‘Renagade" (dumbass Jay-Z can’t even spell Renegade right) with Em and Royce da 5’9, it’s literally 10000 times better. there is no defense for nickelback if
nickelback= what is played of nickelback on the radio
they can’t control which songs of theirs get played
A "Zeile" for avoiding outs
But they do write their own songs, right?
I mean, clearly there must be some conscious decision by that band to write radio-friendly drivel in order to keep the label/radio stations/sponsors/whoever happy? They might not “control” what gets played on the radio but I’d imagine they have a pretty good idea of what songs will be singles.
So, let’s see: you hate Jose Reyes and give a spirited defense of Nickelback. Do you have credibility on anything?

A "Zeile" for avoiding outs
Now,
I’m admittedly a snob, elitist, etc, but I don’t completely agree with that statement. Yes you can like whatever you want, but I think you can say something is better than something else. You can like whatever you want, but I do think there is some standard to what is good and what isn’t.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
V-Ice is not better than Tupac, regardless of your "opinion"
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
What really made me think about that was last year
When everyone was saying how great Lil Wayne is, (I hate him as much as I hate Jay-Z) and A Millie was being played everywhere. I’d say Nas is infinitely better, everyone would say Wayne is better. So I actually listened to the lyrics of A Millie and concluded after listening to nearly 5 lines, that anyone who says he is a venereal disease, and uses menstruation as an example of a venereal disease, cannot be considered a good rapper, regardless of one’s opinion.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
lmao
we were singing that on the bus today… i dont like lil wayne but that’s actually a pretty decent song imo… i could care less if the lyrics make him sound like a dolt
A "Zeile" for avoiding outs
IMO nothing is the wrong taste in music
Some people like Lady GaGa, Britney Spears, and other shitty artists… and I don’t care.
Some people like Weezer, Green Day, Journey, and Nickelback, among other bands…. and I don’t care.
Some people like Led Zeppelin, The Fray, and AC/DC… and yet, wow, I still don’t care!
A "Zeile" for avoiding outs
oh i agree theres no "right" when it comes to what you should like
but there is a difference in quality from a strictly musical standpoint. I think some of the distinction comes down to how much background you have in music theory or playing an instrument. The more you learn about those sorts of things the more critical you tend to be about music.

IMO Led Zeppelin is way overrated
I consider myself a fan of older music, and yet still time after time, I find myself unable to listen to any of their songs (except for Dyer Maker)… same goes for AC/DC

I basically just said the same thing above.
But you also just defended Nickelback, so maybe I should re-evaluate myself.

Also some other good ones from throughout history (and stretching the definition of rock a bit): Weezer, Foreigner, Aerosmith, The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, many others. Led Zep is not on their level in my eyes.

Green Day and Journey are your Numbers One and Two?
Journey is better than Led Zeppelin? Holy hell I have no idea what angle you’re coming from. That’s just crazy.

Say what you want Rush's music
but even if you hate every song, which I get why people don’t like them, at least recognize Neil Peart’s pure awesomeness. The only drummer I’d definitively say is better is Bonham, and it’s still close.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
I say Bonham is the best
then a tie between Peart and Moon, then it gets a little murky you have guys like Ginger Baker and Mitch Mitchell who are great as well.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20091201&content_id=7733508&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
“We feel Brian is ideal for our ballclub,” said Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. “He has played in the [National League] East for this entire decade, so he knows the opposing hitters in this division well and he has also proven he can handle the bat. He’s a guy that we would feel comfortable with playing for an extended period of time, if needed.”
