Phils Emerging as Halladay Frontrunner
I've been reconsidering the possibility of a Halladay trade for the past week, considering the pitching market, and further developments like this would certainly expedite my support. Gotta get hday1 or hday2 IMHO.

It may be a moot point for us
One of Jayson Stark’s sources told him that Halladay probably wouldn’t approve a trade to the Mets.
While it’s certainly possible Stark and his source are wrong, the idea that Halladay wouldn’t want to come here isn’t that hard to believe.
Here is something I do believe though: if Halladay ends up a Phillie, Lackey will end up a Met.

Stark is a huge homer though
related to your Lackey point, this situation might add the fifth year to Jason Bay’s contract…

If thats the case
The Mets should be calling all the other interested teams and seeing if there’s anything they can do to help. Maybe they can work out a prospect swap that would help pique the Jays interest.

What are his sources?
Why wouldn’t he approve a trade to the Mets. He wants to go to a team that has a shot at winning. According to the gamblers at Vegas, we do. I smell BS.

Meh
I can understand why he wouldn’t think that of us. And I don’t think Starks has any reason to BS.

He's Jason Stark; That's reason enough.

It's

Honestly
let them have him and start planning for 2011. This would absolutely gut their farm and pretty much narrow their window to next year, 2011, and if guys age well 2012. Howard has old man skills, so I think the decline is gonna come pretty quick for him (hopefully not till after the Phillies lock him up to a long term crippling contract though). Ibanez is already on the decline, I think that contract will look like an albatross by the end. Rollins is already in steep decline, Polanco is in his mid-30’s. They’d have to spend a ton of money to extend Halladay, meaning they’d have to make some hard choices when it comes to Lee, Hamels, and Utley, and they’d probably be pretty hamstrung in next years free agent market. And with a bunch of aging guys, injuries always become a major issue.
Meanwhile, the Mets could basically punt 2010 – forget about Lackey or Bay. I’d still want Holliday, b/c he’s young and will be an impact player for the next few years, but for the most part use 2010 to see what Reyes and Wright are going to be going forward, see how Beltrans knees look, hope Ike and Fernando and Mejia and some of the other guys keep progressing, and then go into the strong 2011 free agent class like gangbusters, with a ton of cash and (hopefully) a good GM.

theres some merit to this idea
although if they land halladay they’re going to be a monster for the next year or two which will be painful to watch. Also this front office doesnt understand the concept of building for the future, especially now that their asses are inches from the fire after a few horrendous seasons, so I don’t hold out hope that they wait out the storm and shoot for 2011 or 2012

I agree with CJM
the phils window is obviously closing with the age of their core, and a trade like this would decimate an already weak farm system. They’ll probably contend for another year or two then fall off a massive cliff.
Of course the problem with waiting for 2011/2012 is we’ll have to pay Reyes market price, God forbid we let him walk, and David Wright much closer to market price than we’ve been paying. And considering Omar couldn’t build a roster with 150 million paying them peanuts who knows what he’ll do when they’re talking about 1/5 of that payroll.

It seems like you feel that Reyes should be allowed to walk. It is an interesting scenario. Sad part is, we don’t have a replacement. Tejada might be abel to step in, but I would not put money on it. Reese is a second baseman, and Flores is not really a short stop.

of course all this speculation is contingent upon Reyes coming back as the player he was before
After a number of lingering leg injuries, and surgery in the offseason I’m going to worry about him coming back 100% before i worry about how difficult he may be to re-sign down the road. If his speed has been negatively impacted by the leg problems, it hurts his value somewhat. I hope this isn’t the case, but they let him run around and re-injure the leg numerous times instead of just getting him the surgery he needed when he first needed it, so we’ll have to see how he comes back from it.

No I don't feel Reyes should be allowed to walk
I’m just commentating on how if Omar couldn’t build a team after 06, he definitely can’t now.
by Gina on Dec 11, 2009 3:22 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Err he definitely won't be able too when faced with
much less payroll flexibility.
by Gina on Dec 11, 2009 3:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
you would have to trade reyes
and get something before you allowed him to walk. Personally it would be silly in my opinion to do either.

Yup, this is the problem
Of course, it all becomes more palatable if a couple current prospects really emerge by then, and this is probably the best the farm system has looked since Omar’s taken over, so we’ve got that going for us, which is nice.
