Take a flyer on Wang?
With the Yankees rumored to be wisely non-tendering Chien-Ming Wang to save $5 million a year, there seem to be worse risks than the Mets signing him to a minor-league contract and taking a low-risk flyer on him.
Obviously his peripherals in his best years were not always predictive of the 19 wins he won (eg, 1.54 and 1.76 K/BB), but two 19-win, 4-5 WAR seasons pre-injury seem like a higher upside than Tim Redding ever was. Especially if it's league minimum, and even that isn't guaranteed unless he pitches.
Thoughts?

If he's healthy sure
He was better than Piniero before the injuries, but he’s another guy I’d feel a lot more comfortable with if there was a better infield defense in place.

for a minor league contract and league minimum sure why not
the upside is good, but i agree with Meddler that an infield defence would really be our best pitching acquisition this offseason.

This should be a 'chat' FanShot
But since it’s already here, I think the Mets should definitely consider Chien-Ming Wang, though I suspect that if the Yankees non-tender him they will just re-sign him for less money/guarantees.
I'd be happy to sign Wang for the league minimum, but would he take it?
I have to imagine some GM (actually, I could see this being Omar) will go “ZOMG 19 WINZ IN 2OO6 AND 2OO7” and offer him like $3M plus a guaranteed spot in the rotation, and I don’t think he’s worth it.
$3mil, yes
guaranteed position NOPE

If Wang is healthy he will not have a small role. He will be in the rotation.
An incentive laden one-year deal might be a pretty good idea. Although I assume that he will resign with the Yanks, as Eric said above.

I would agree
But I don’t think there’s any chance they go after him for the price he’s expected to sign for
Yeah, he's worth it
but Omar will see that he had a 34.50 ERA and go no way

I like Wang
but I’m not sure pairing him with the Mets infield defense is the best idea.
Also, I didn’t even realize what I had typed into the title until I almost hit post, and then I got a good laugh, so screw it, I’m keeping it. Pun intended. Have a good laugh at my expense.

Absolutely.
I don’t understand why the Yankees would want to non-tender him. I mean, since when have the Yankees been concerned about monetary matters? Their loss would be our gain, though. Wang is still pretty young, and he’s put up decent numbers as a ground ball pitcher with a Yankee defense of Jeter and Cano playing behind him. Can Reyes and Castillo really be worse?

this is actually kind of a no-brainer move
Wanh for 1 to 3 M could be a steal
Wanh?
Of course I meant Wang. Most of the Mets moves already cause me to say Wanh, W-ahhh, What!!, What the hell ! etc
Should we call you a wahnbulance?

The man's officially non-tendered!
Unfortunately, it appears Cashman wants him back.

Wang only had a 4.55 xFIP in 2009,
and his career FIP is .23 less than his xFIP due to his low HR rates. His HR/FB rate was 17.1% and his BABIP was .397. And he only pitched 42 innings. I would definitely try to pick him up for an incentive deal.
Normally I would too, but where would you put your Wang?
He’s not going to take a minor league deal and the Mets already have at least four guys who qualify as reclamation projects who are impossible to project with any real accuracy for 2010: Perez, Maine, Nieve, Niese. I mean, it’s not like we lack for candidates to run out there to see what they can do.

The majority of the time I keep it in my pants
But concerning Chien-Ming Wang, the Taiwanian(?) has had sustained success at the major league level. If Wang is healthy, he should be a reliable starting pitcher. If not, put him on the DL and he won’t take a roster spot.

That's the adjective form...
What’s the noun? Is it Taiwanian? Exiled Chaing Kai-Shekian?

where he’s healthy, starting, and not very good.

When has he ever been not good...
I understand his BB rate and tRA was a little higher in 2008, but some of that must have been due to injury.

I can see Niese and Maine in the pen, especially at the beginning of the season
but Ollie? His stuff and his head is anti-anti-bullpen.
Also, Niese seems like he has a higher upside than Nieve. I’d rather groom Niese as a starter by having him work as the long maon out of the pen.

Wang will be wearing Dodger Blue
Remember a guy named Joe Torre? He is now managing the Dodgers, and he remembers when Wang won 19 games for him two years in a row. Wang remembers Torre too. You think he’ll go anywhere else?
Yes. The Yankees.
