Mets Offer Kelvim Escobar Minor League Deal
8:08pm: Hubbuch is a liar and has since changed his blog post to indicate that the Mets have actually just offered Escobar a minor league deal; they haven't signed him. So, our bad for believing anything Hubbuch writes. Love ya, Bart!
Per Bart Hubbuch the Mets have signed offered Kelvim Escobar to a minor league deal. Escobar was great in 2006 -- 4.6 WAR -- and 2007 -- 5.2 WAR -- but missed all of 2008 and pitched just five innings last year. Not a bad low-risk high-reward signing, and it should definitely make up for not getting John Lackey or Roy Halladay.

Definitely, we saved 80 billion dollars on this deal
this is a decent move
at least we get the occasional little one right.

All I have to says is
In your face Phillies, in your face
Honestly
except for Alex Cora, I’ve liked the Mets offseason so far. If Bay and Molina stay rumors, the Mets get Holliday + Sheets/Pineiro, I’d be pretty happy with Omar.
"[The Giants] beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. ... It wasn't even close." - Raheem Morris, 9/27/09
let's just say I don't dislike them
I’m more or less ambivalent to them. Neither one is making a lot of money, and considering the deal Jason Kendall just got, I’m not going to complain too much about them.

yeah jason kendall really sets the watermark for too much money for a bad catcher

Sign Kendalls agent to be the Mets negotiator

If Molina doesn't come
Then I don’t see a problem with them, they’re decent signings and provides depth at a position we need it at.

The report says a minor league deal is offered, not signed. Although the URL says signed.

Arangure of ESPN, earlier today...
Said that the Mets and Rays were interested. He was said to be leaning toward NY because of Johan, K-rod and Blanco.

This would be the best move we've made since Sheffield.
How sad is that?

Lol yeah I was thinking that
this might be the bright spot of the 2009-2010 off-season AND the 2008-2009 off-season
best
it will inspire 1000 metsbloggers comments containing the phrases “los mets” or “freddie coupons”, referencing the fact we made this deal while the Phillies were locking up Halladay.
i need to get back into reading metsblog.
it really is high comedy
Castro is fat and slow! LOL!
At least we have F-Core!!!!

I will admit I am not up to speed on Escobar, but this feels like
this year’s version of Freddy Garcia.
you know what I'm sayin' ?
Well Escobar's only two years removed from his success
Garcia was about 4 years removed, and even then wasn’t nearly as good as Escobar was in 06 and 07.
I must respectfully disagree
Escobar is better – he has far more upside that Garcia.
Escobar (La Guiara), Garcia (Caracas) and Garcia’s father-in-law (Ocumare Del Tuy) were all born within the Caracas region. Are you suggesting a connection?

i liked the freddie garcia move
he was a more serviceable 5th starter than livan or tim redding. and he pitched okay for chicago when they gave him a shot.
Yeah that's one of the things that always puzzles me
the number of players we never seem to even give a chance even when everyone in front of them is falling. It’s not like Redding or Livan were tearing things up, why couldn’t Garcia get a chance?
it is our superior system of player evaluation during ST
where the decision makers are either
a) playing golf
b) giving stupid interviews on SNY
c) playing golf
you know what I'm sayin' ?
Yeah
He sucked in ST and the velocity wasn’t there. Can’t fault them for cutting him.

Yay. I would love this signing if it happens
This would be a great move and something that the Mets need. Especially when the trade and FA market are making the Mets fans feel worse everyday. Escobar can be a great bullpen arm or if needed a fill in for the rotation. Now we just need to sign Bay, find a first baseman, and add lots more pitching.
High Upside, No downside

No downside
That seems kind of impossible. Way to work in WFAN absolutes.

Right. He could get drunk during a flight to some other city, and accidentally crash the team plane, killing half of the team.
I for one think that qualifies as a downside…

Depends on which half of the team.

true, but technically it is downside.
its just low risk. its different. doesn’t mean we shouldn’t sign him. we should.

The Mets are getting suckered with Escobar.
The only way he could pass a physical is the fact he has not been pitching or using his arm. The Angels let him pitch a few innings in one game last year and as a result he went right back on the 60 day DL and did not work anymore in 2009.
