What if Bay does sign elsewhere?
I'm curious to see what everyones opinion would be in this theoretical scenario. Lets say the team that has offered Bay a longer/larger contract is not the Mets bidding against themselves, but some other team (lets say Giants since Sabean would do this sort of thing). What should the Mets do if they're outbid for Bay (making the crazy assumption Omar has a limit and doesn't fly into panic mode) ? Do we focus on stockpiling gamble-type pitchers and sort them out later? With Bay, Lackey, and Holliday out of the picture, who would you like to see the money spent on, since we'd have a lot of it floating around. Figure this might be an interesting diversion from the days events to see if we can find any kind of hope in the leftovers of this offseason.

Is Holliday out of the picture?
im turning to drugs and alcohol
actually i’d say PUNT on 2010. maybe some piniero but no need to tie yourself down with mediocre free agents.
im considering Holliday likely off the map at this point
with an 8/128 offer, if the mets top it they’d have to be crazy, and I can’t see him turning that down.

Screw Piniero
We dont have Dave Duncan, We have Dan Warthen
Forget trading a power bat in the outfield for 2010. Lets sign The Dukester, Bedard, and Sheets. If two of the three are healthy they are inserted in the 2011 rotation. Then build from there.
Yeah, Pinero is going to be good next year
just not as a Met. We dont have a 2b who can handle a groundballer. Its the same reason i’m a bit scared of Marquis.
I like these pitching suggestions

nick evans
bullpen catcher of life.
“Start getting warm, I guess. I dunno, I just kinda want to play one of these days.”
“Loosen up your arm. Hey, Dan! Uh, Mr. Warthen! Sir? Have you talked to Mr. Manuel about me possibly getting a chance to play one of theand he’s gone.”
“Just go right down the middle, nice and easy. I want to look good when I’m catching in case Omir, Josh, and Brian all go down with simultaneous injuries and I need to play or something.”

I don't think it ever really was.
We don’t want Bradley, and can’t find another team to make it a three-way.

Would signing Bay really be that bad?
Aside from Crawford who may not even make it to the market, the free agent OF market sucks for next year.
I'm not saying Bay is that bad
I’m not a huge fan, but he’s the best option left to us now. im just asking what happens in the event that somebody other than the Mets goes ridiculously over the top to sign him, and he ends up elsewhere. Then what do we do?
by KeithsMoustache on Dec 15, 2009 1:25 AM EST up reply actions
I'm OK with stockpile pitching theory
as long as we’re not giving major league contracts for the Tim Redding level pitcher.
2 things to be scared about
1) Mets are serious bidders for Fernando Rodney. It’s not that being all in on Rodney is a bad thing because I am a fan, and like him as a pitcher…it’s bad because he was looking for a 3 year deal near 30 million…Lyon got 15 for 3 and I don’t even like that deal.
2) My “Road To the Show” mode on MLB: The Show has an absolutely dreadful roster for the 2010 Mets. I have no control over it either. Let’s just say our starting RF is Vlad Guerrero. They also somehow acquired Barry Zito although I never figured out how..and I really don’t want to know.
BTW Philly had Carl Crawford and Werth was the 4th OF.
I can
of course, it’s a lot easier when you replay Mets history from 1962 on and you know which players from each draft are gonna end up Hall of Famers. Actually, come to think of it:
Marty McFly for Mets GM!
"[The Giants] beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. ... It wasn't even close." - Raheem Morris, 9/27/09
Then...
…sign Rodney and trade him to Philly for Werth when Lidge has his first meltdown.
Problem solved…
Hey the Phillies traded away Cliff Lee who's making $9 mm next season
Who knows what they would do?
"For $11.4 million you can actually get a good player. But of course this is one of the things foolish organizations do: They complain that they can't afford good players after spending millions of dollars on not-good players." --Rob Neyer

I was making a joke...
…relating to the video game.
At least the Mets are showing interest in
Mike MacDougal and Wang (according to Noble)…………………………what a total shit-storm so far.

if we miss out on bay
we should go after a guy like capps and maybe calero to help out the bullpen, and take some fliers on some high risk high reward guys like sheets, bedard, wang, duchererserserererser, etc. not sure who’s available for left, maybe trade for willingham, get delgado at first. i honestly think the mets will be in contention for the wildcard regardless. reyes, wright, beltran is a dastardly combination.
exactly
And then spend the rest of the season building a Spring Training facility next door to Carl Crawford’s house

could certainly make for an interesting 2010
as far as sorting out all the random pieces we pick up to short contracts. Of course this kind of strategy would require careful handling of the major league and minor league rosters, so my guess is we’d bungle it somehow and lose wright and reyes to the rule 5 draft next year somehow.

capps probably wont sign
wants a closer job wherever he goes.

I think the Mets are quickly approaching the point where it may be best for them to do
nothing this year, and go for broke next year signing everyone in sight.
you know what I'm sayin' ?
the problem is their might not be anyone worth signing next year
I think we need to make a trade for someone like Crawford, although preferably not Crawford because Friedman isn’t on my approved gm trade list, but some young player that’s either getting expensive fast or going to be getting expensive that the team is likely going to need to trade. Maybe like Miguel Cabrera or Prince Fielder.
And Aaron Harang
There is quite a gathering of big name players that could be FAs in 2011.
Pujols
Beckett
Cliff Lee
Brandon Webb
just for starters. of course, by then I’ll be dead because THIS TEAM IS GOING TO KILL ME.
you know what I'm sayin' ?
pujols will never make it to free agency
the cards are going to lock him up to a huge extension. The rest of these guys could be interesting if they make it though. Don’t forget Mauer is potentially a free agent, although i get the feeling the twins will lock him up too.
by KeithsMoustache on Dec 15, 2009 2:10 PM EST up reply actions
The Red Sox are already trying to extend Beckett
And I don’t see ANY chance the Pujols hits free agency. The Mariners seem to think they can extend Lee but he’s interesting, the problem is he’s gonna be another one of those early 30s pitchers expecting a huge long-term contract while they’re entering their decline. I have no idea how old Webb is though.
Webb's gonna turn 31 next season
but I have to think he’s the type of pitcher that should be able to be good deep into his 30’s. He might not be as dominant, but he shouldn’t fall off a cliff

Yeah probably since he's a groundball pitcher
and doesn’t rely on blowing players a way. He’s probably someone that would be worth one of the longer contracts, though Arizona also might be able to lock him up since they’re in a bigger market, despite not having big market payrolls in recent years.
If we don't sign Bay
Sign marginal FAs to one-year contracts, pass the 2010 season in mediocrity, and spend like hell next winter. Webb appeals to me the most.

I would trade for Milton Bradely for Castillo,
Sign Sheets, Duchscherer, Wang, Nick Johnson, Kelly Johnson, and Cust, hopefully all for one year deals. We are assuming the Mets can’t get Holliday, right?
yup this is assuming we can't get the big guys
I like most of these suggestions, although where would you want Cust? He’s a terrible fielder, and Kelly Johnson, while an upgrade over castillo, is still a pretty poor defensive 2b. I guess beggars cant be choosers though. Sheets Duchscherer and Wang would all be decent pickups though.
by KeithsMoustache on Dec 15, 2009 7:06 PM EST up reply actions
I think Kelly Johnson would be the best short term pick-up for 2B,
even with his bad fielding. Cust would be for depth in the outfield and possibly 1B. He is a great hitter, and would be a great bench piece. And if the Mets can’t sign an OF or 1B, he would do a decent job full time.
The problem with Cust
is that he’ll give almost all of his offensive value back with his defense. I think we should avoid him, especially if he might play full-time.
