if we don't get bay I won't be terribly disappointed.

because we’re going to end up overpaying for him. I just hope they take the money and invest it in a lot of cheap contracts to try to find some reclamation projects. There are plenty of pitchers in the FA market not far removed from very good seasons. Maybe we can find a few on the cheap that can bounce back.

Reclamation projects, non-tenders and salary dumps

We’ll need a lot of luck to fill all the holes with “bounce backs”. Not that we have many options at this point.

im looking to 2011 at that point

basically we have the money put aside for payroll, use it for a bunch of 1 year contracts and then see what you’ve got. There are a lot of guys out there who have the potential to be very strong acquisitions for cheap, and if we can’t find any high caliber free agents to invest in, I say go with quantity in the hopes that we accidentially get quality, in which case we can work out extensions later.

I'm very afraid

of the inevitable Bay signing now. With Holliday and his ridiculous monter offer off the market, Omar will probably panic and give Bay 5/90 or something. I’d rather the Mets pick up Church (I know it’ll never happen with Omar/Jerry around) and have Church/Frenchy/Pagan for the 2 corner OF spots than be locked into 5 years of an overpaid Bay. Put us in a position to dominate next offseason. Having that extra $18M in the budget next offseason will probably be more beneficial than having it this offseason.

Been trying to clean up my language of late...

… because of a kid on the way.

It’s getting a lot tougher by the day. I may end up doing more “rassen-frassen”ing than a Red Bull-pounding Hanna Barbera character.

I think the Yankees are getting involved just to fuck with us.

They have no use for Bay, realistically.

I would prefer Holliday to Bay, but with that supermassive offer by the Cards, I don’t see us netting Holliday anymore. Bay, then, is the next best guy. We’ll probably overpay for him, but I’d rather see him than some no name out there in left- even though I’ve kinda given up on 2010.

not entirely true about the yankees

if they get bay they dont have to sign Damon. Which means by the Law of God Hates the Mets, we will probably end up with Damon.

+1 on the new Law

it’s more like a prime directive, though.

you know what I'm sayin' ?

by fxcarden on Dec 15, 2009 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

Damon would be WAY LESS EXPENSIVE. I mean, at some point, the Yankees have to become fiscally aware, right?

Ugh, imagine if WE end up signing Damon for left field? Shoot me now…

The Yankees aren't really unfiscally aware

I mean when you look at our respective teams, even though their payroll is 50 million more than ours look at how much more talent they’ve squeezed into that 50 million, especially when you consider they’re not getting cheap production from guys like Wright and Reyes, they’re spending a lot but they’re definitely spending it fairly efficiently.

Plus if Posada leaves and Montero is able to adequately replace him thats like 13 million off their payroll isn’t it? Same thing with Petite and Hughes/Joba so it could make sense to bite the bullet just for this year when they know they’re getting relief soon.

But that being said it does seem like they’re unlikely to bring in another big name free agent, Hal apparently is pretty level headed and understands that going over 20 million over the luxury tax every year is bad business.

don't want Bay

I think we need a few SP more than OF, we just need guys to return/start hitting

SP is where the games are won

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
