Jose Reyes on WFAN this afternoon with Mike Francesa. This is just one of dozens of great quotes from Jose during the interview, he really aced it. How can any Mets fan not love him? For more, check out Metsblog's live-blog of the interview.

Jose is the man

Hey, "Mr. Reyes", it's different
Victorino is a WINNER and GRITTY. You are a CHOKER, who has no GRIT.
Mets didn't make the playoffs...
…as you may know, in 2008, the year of that controversy.
It was some regular season game, not the playoffs.
Maybe those games against the Phils feel like the playoffs to the Mets?

Hmm
you may have forgotten that Victorino showboated earlier in the game. Jose then hit a 3 run HR and stared down victorino while rounding the bases. EFF, you have been a dousche for a long time, why do you come here and make an ass of yourself even more so? Go hang with Clout and Sophist

This is proof
that, although I hate to admit it still, that firing Willie Randolph really needed to be done after all. However, the execution of his firing was ill-advised (2:15 AM in Omar’s hotel room in Anaheim, after Willie unnecessarily made a trip to California – I believe Tony B was Omar’s courier to Willie to make a trip to Omar’s, post-haste).

right on brother
I forgot who said it here (maybe it was you cjmulrain) that watching Reyes play baseball is one of the true joys of being a Met fan. Anybody who wants to tamper or dilute that is crazy in my view. He is 25 years old, still a baby in baseball terms and still has great upside. To even think of giving up or trading this guy is as foolish as you can get. And Kudos for calling out Victorino.
Also it looks as if the Mets are sticking to their story (and by having Reyes repeat it, doubling down) that it was the Dodgers misdiagnosing the orginal injury as a calf injury that lead to all the problems. Considering that the Mets keep pushing this and I have yet to hear any strong rebuttal from the Dodgers camp, I am starting to wonder if there may be something to this.
I remember this from the game.
I remember I had a few questions as to why they didnt have the Mets doctors examine him at the time. I thought it was bizarre that the Mets would have their young, superstar player examined by another team’s doctors.
by aparkermarshall on Dec 16, 2009 5:21 PM EST up reply actions
Burned!
Make that a double-burn, if Jose went to see the Phillies’ team doctors.
The Mets medical staff were probably hired for cheap from outsourced areas, and never set foot in anything resembling a “Medical School”.
If you were to ask them what Adrenaline (Epinephrine) was, they’d probably blurt out “steroids!” in a clamor, like those investors from Wall St. And then, to stymie them, if you were to tell them that we all produce adrenaline, then they would assume all baseball players were on steroids! Classic example I just mentioned here.
"The picture looked like I was in the dugout, but they got it all wrong. I absolutely was never in the dugout."
- Mr. B.V. Incognito
I thought it was bizarre, too.
I can see having another team’s doc take a look at the player if you’re on the road and it might be a matter of getting the right treatment immediately. But after that? As soon as you get your player home don’t you have him start a treatment plan immediately with the doctors that know him best?

Hey--as good a place as any to talk about Reyes' HOF chances.
What do y’all think he’ll need to make it?
According to FanGraphs his career WAR is already 21.4. Offhand doesn’t a WAR around 60 give you a good shot at making the Hall? Jose is 26. He’s had four full seasons. His three partial seasons add up to one full one. I have to believe that if he repeats his performance to date twice more he’d be just about a lock. That would give him a line of
Games 2373
PAs 10953
Runs 1653
Hits 2880
RBIs 975
SB 903/225
BA .286
OPS+ 101
Fielding + 27 UZR
That’s overqualified for an above average fielding SS. The hits, runs and stolen bases would put him in the upper echelon of shortstops. So maybe his career to date another one and a half times would do it.

Reyes could be the all time greatest shortstop, but people would still say, he never quite lived up to his potential.
"I see the job in bigger terms. Paperwork, that’s false hustle... Know what I’m sayin’?"
Mickey Mantle never lived up to his potential (and legitimatley so, with his knee problems).
Not living up to your potential =/= being a HoF-caliber player. If he puts up the proper numbers, what is left to to have an actual, legitimate argument against it?

Maybe
Cora doesn’t care about playing to win – he does it for the money. But Reyes really does want to play, and it shows.
Cora is like “let’s get this sh*t over with – I want to go home and get me a Mercedes or something”
Reyes is like “Let’s get this sh*t started – I want to go home after I steal me some bases. Hell, I’ll steal home if I can!” (Now, that’s badass.)
"The picture looked like I was in the dugout, but they got it all wrong. I absolutely was never in the dugout."
- Mr. B.V. Incognito
Why is it necessarily sarcasm (and therefore, untrue)?
Cora, the only reason he signed with us is because we gave him the most money. Reyes, he signed extensions in which he’s paid a lot less than he is actually worth, choosing to stick with the team. Cora playing for the money, and Reyes playing for the ability to play the game makes sense when looking at the facts.

I don't think he's racist
He simply has no idea what he’s talking about. When he defended his ignorant post from a few days ago, he called everyone else “holier-than-thou”. Now he’s saying Reyes is arrogant for smiling and laughing, just because the Mets weren’t champtions last year. Makes no sense.

He’s 14, he repeats what the people in his neighborhood are saying. I don’t think he’s actually racist, he just hasn’t yet learned to think very critically about what he hears.

I would think that someone who posts on here as often as he does would at least make an effort to understand. most 12-15 year old sports fans I know act like that at first on message boards but usually try to make an effort to understand more complex lines of thinking.
See my post

metsguy234 allows himself to be attached to strings, and then tries to fight back, only to get caught in more strings. Like, in a spider web of sorts. It’s kind of sad, when one thinks of it. Control = pity.

Arrogance aside, though, Reyes is just having a good time. And if that helps him to do better, then let’s have it! When Willie was at the helm, Reyes struggled for this particular reason, or lack thereof. But when Willie went bye-bye, the Jose Reyes of “old” came back. Proof that his input is needed.
In conclusion, saying that you hate Reyes for his liveliness is almost like saying that you want him to struggle. Yeah, yeah, you can bring out the lessons in coping behaviors and all that, but why bother? It’s a waste of time!

Well, I wouldn't say that Reyes struggled under Willie.
He had an excellent 2006 and 2007 (and a pretty good 2005).

If history has any say in this,
it’s that metsguy234 has a long and reputed history of “hating” on Jose Reyes. Like here, for instance. And here. I could go on, but I’m feeling anti-vindictive at this minute.

This is awesome
My man-crush on Jose has been renewed.
Jose is absolutely right that he used to hammer Jon Lieber – 1.357 OPS against him in 28 plate appearances is the best against any pitcher against whom he has more than 20, though he’s had almost as much success against Kyle Davies in the same number of PA. He’s also done very well against Matt Cain (1.861 OPS in 17 PA) and namesake Jo-Jo Reyes (2.633 OPS in 10 PA).
On the other side, he’s 0-17 in 17 PA against AJ Burnett, and also 0-11 in 11 PA against (huh?) Chan Ho Park.
I am so very ready
… to fall back in fan-love with this kid.

I can't wait until the Mets win a World Series with Reyes
and the media stories change from “arrogant player who doesn’t care about winning” back to “incredibly talented player who just loves to play baseball”

nah
Jimmy Rollins used to get heat for “dogging it” back in the day. Then the Phillies won and now he’s so gritty they serve him at Waffle House.

No, it will be somewhat anti-climatic
They’ll credit the brilliant smarts of the Minaya Administration and his Front Office cabinet. The difference here is that Tony B (the Mets’ version of Dick Cheney) will be out of the picture.

God willing
im worried we’ll accidently win one despite Omar’s failings and he’ll get a ten year extension, plus it will reaffirm his idea that stats are false hustle.

that would really bother you?
I wouldn’t give a crap, so long as they actually won a World Series

Yes
because with a core like the resources we have, and the general lack of smart teams+teams with matching resources in the NL, unlike the AL, we could be the red sox/yankees of the NL and instead of hoping to accidentally win one every 10-30 years actually have a legit chance of winning multiple ones a decade.

I just want them to win one.

for example
2006 – 5 extra wins would have made these last few years a quadrillion times more bearable.

It would have made the last few years better
but how about 2010,2011,2012,2013,2014 when we trade Wright for Derek Jeter, cause God knows he’ll still be playing, cause Jeters a winner and we need a ss anyway cause we let Reyes walk cause he didn’t take the game seriously enough.

I wouldn't care
I just want the Mets to win the World Series. I don’t care if they do it with 15 David Ecksteins and 10 Ollie Perez’s and the rest of MLB comes down with the Swine Flu.

One question:
How much of a winner would Jeter be in Kansas City???
I'd be happy if they MADE IT to a WS.
Winning one is a crapshoot, and would be a bonus.
you know what I'm sayin' ?
I loved how he said

I was watching a screening
of the movie Invictus the other night, and there’s a great scene where the crowd starts chanting “Ole, Ole, Ole,” and it got me fired up for the Mets season, because it’s been so long since we’ve heard the “Jose” chant. It will be nice to see him playing again, and that first “Jose Jose Jose” chant of the season will be pretty sweet (no matter how bad the rest of the team is).
Nowhere to go but UP, I like to say
The Mets of 2010 just have to be better! Right?

I just saw the entire interview from the YES network
Awesome. You can’t really appreciate just the audio. You have to see the body language.
Welcome back Jose.
Oh, and good job by Francesa.
you know what I'm sayin' ?
I didn't really need any more reasons to love him
but I don’t mind them. From being comfortable enough with himself to know he doesn’t need to change who he is, to talking about wanting to be more patient at the plate, he’s an awesome person and an awesome player and fuck anyone who says otherwise, because they’re just ignorant.
And I can’t say the word ignorant without including this http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/154561
That is funny
Because I think of that clip every time I use the word “ignorant”. And yet, ironically, it’s ignorance that makes the world go not ’round, but flat. (inside reference)

The best part of the interview was the end
Where he called Fatcessa “papa”
Yeah, his having been injured in the general leg area before, and then coming back and posting All-Star numbers really have no bearing on anything.

Good For Jose
Most Mets fans not on AA are idiots.Jose is one of the best SS in baseball he deserves to be respected
DO WHAT JOSE REYES DO!!!
People who want Reyes traded can never answer the question: Who is going to replace him such that output at short does not dimish sufficiently that whatever pick-up was made in trading him is negated.
None of them can ever answer. Hanley Ramirez is the only short stop who is genuinely better than Reyes. Other All-Star, marquee names, only a few of them are, questionably, as good, or better than Reyes- Tulo in Colorado, Rollins in Philly…

lol @ Rollins
even healthy he’s barely half the player Reyes is right now, and he’s declining fast.

Actually guys, i've thought about it, and the Reyes detractors are totally right
When Reyes smiles while running the bases, his mouth is slightly open. This increases the surface area exposed to air while running (the entirety of the inside of his mouth is now exposed), which increases air drag on his face. As a direct consequence Reyes has to expend more energy to maintain a lower speed than he could optimally reach. Since he wastes so much energy on face-drag, he is tired and less effective later in games (And thus percieved as lazy). If he would stop smiling he would run faster AND be more energetic late in games. in conclusion Jose Reyes’ smiling is holding him back from his true potential, and until he stops doing it, we’ll just have to settle for less than his best.

Reyes in 2010
It’s hard to predict what will happen after missing most all of 2009. We definitely need him 95% healthy for 95% of the games next year to be successful.
When your game is mostly speed-based, I don’t get a warm fuzzy feeling after trying to play with a hamstring tear for months (thanks Mets), then having off-season surgery to re-attach it, or crochet it, or whatever it is they do with a knife and thread and muscle.
But he’s young, so hopefully a fast healer. Still, anyone who isn’t concerned about his legs in 2010 is whistling past the graveyard.
There's also the fact
the medical staff apparently abandoned the training regime he’d been on since 04 that was keeping him healthy.
Why this happened no one knows.

It's an old-timey thing
Sort of akin to using leaches. Although that’s new again.
It's a really old-timey thing.
From medieval ‘medicine’, as it were. Essentially, they believed that the human body had four basic substances which needed to be balanced in order to maintain health: black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood. If you got sick, it was because your humors were imbalanced. In other words, we employed a group of bass-ackwards medieval butchers for a medical staff last year. Leeches might actually have been a step forward for them, since there is a proven medical use for them.
