These things are silly but fun. Voltron and Johan star, and that guy with no power/leadership and that unfocused smiley guy make cameos. Some other ex-Mets sprinkled in too.

On a serious note

it’s weird to see Vazquez right below Martinez, like I know numbers wise it probably makes sense but it’s hard for me to grasp the idea that Vazquez has been as good/nearly as good as Pedro.

I imagine it's because at his peak Pedro was WAYbetter

But because of injuries his peak didn’t last particularly long. Where as Javy has been consistent.

Javy's been amazingly consistent

Has pitched at least 198 innings in every season this decade. Has an ERA right around 4, despite playing some bad defensive teams and in hitters ball parks.

by vivaelpujols on Dec 17, 2009 4:48 AM EST up reply actions

Right

Pedro pitched 1468 innings in the decade, Vazquez 2163. If you’re doing a cumulative, WAR-style ranking, pitching almost 50% more innings has significant value.

by JoshNY on Dec 17, 2009 9:18 AM EST up reply actions

Don't forget

Pedro’s period of domination began in the 90s. He won two of his three Cy Youngs then. It’s hard to think of his career as just 2000-2009. Javy on the other hand didn’t become a good pitcher until the turn of the milennium. I think that’s mostly what it is, because if you take the best 10 year stretch of each guy’s career it’s not even close to close.

I didn't even bother reading them

Every time Neyer writes something, there are predictably hundreds of people lined up to tell him he’s an idiot because he doesn’t repeat the same things the rest of the MSM does. It’s especially ridiculous on things like this because it’s obviously a highly subjective exercise, so there will be plenty of room for argument, and Neyer himself would probably entertain real debate, but these people will refuse to admit that there is any possible ordering other than their own. What a world this would be if people were willing to step back for a moment and just consider ideas contrary to their own…

this list is pretty silly

plenty of guys here weren’t active for more than five years, or were great in the 90’s and fizzled out halfway through this decade. just a silly thing to attempt.

by Rey-O on Dec 17, 2009 10:54 AM EST reply actions

anyone noticed how, in general

no one gives a shit that this decade runs out in 2 weeks, because there’s no good way to refer to it? we’ll have to wait till the 20s to be once again flooded with top 10 lists.

Really?

I’ve seen tons of “best of the aughts” lists.

Figgins #94 and Reyes #95

I know it’s pointless to nitpick…. but wtf. Why does Figgins rank higher than Reyes? Durability? Played longer? Jose’s full seasons are better than any of Figgins’ seasons.

by DC4Three on Dec 17, 2009 3:30 PM EST reply actions

no

not really. Fangraph’s WAR start in 2002, skipping a couple of Koskie’s best years, and a couple of Lee’s first years too, but nevertheless, Koskie had higher WARs in 2 seasons than Lee ever had. Lee beat him for the decade, not counting ‘01 and ’02, 2 of Koskie’s better years I think, and then Koskie didn’t have Lee’s longevity. Close but Koskie over Lee isn’t unbelievable.

by wobatus on Dec 18, 2009 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

likely wrong

Chone Figgins had a 6.1 WAR in 2009. Better WAR than Jose ever had, slightly. Not apples to apples, but it’s hard to say all of Jose’s full seasons are better than any of Figgins. But that ws Figgins’ best by far.
