Should the Mets be interested in Damon?

The Mets signed the Japanese set up man. Lets assume they are going to get Bay. Should they try to sign Damon? Add Beltran to that mix and they have a pretty good outfield. Good offensive potential and decent defense. Bay may not be the best but considering who we've fielded the last couple of years, not so bad. Next......we need some [pitching and are obviously not getting a big name here. This should have been a priority. Bronson Orroyo has been linked to Omar. Don't know much about it though. I just don't want to suck so bad this season.

also not to be a pain but this should be in the Fanshot section

since it’s more of a conversation starter than a full article.

Also is Bronson Orroyo a combination of Bronson Arroyo and Jesse Orosco?

Haha, missed that.

I think Damon is only useful

at first base, but can he actually play the position?

by Delgado on Dec 18, 2009 1:03 PM EST reply actions

an interesting suggestion

but with Murph supposedly locked in at first i doubt that happens.

by KeithsMoustache on Dec 18, 2009 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

we dont want to pay JD $5m to platoon with Murphy

Just use Castillo as the platoon for Murphy then cut him after the season

oh man a Castillo/Murphy split at first?

I guess by comparison when Murph was playing he would look like a power hitter at least. I’m still holding out hope somebody is dumb enough to take Castillo for a sack of magic beans or something.

The Mets think they have their next superstar in Francouer so it’s a moot point anyway. No to him though, can’t defend. Let him continue putting up good numbers for the Yanks. That ballpark couldn’t be more perfect for him.

A thousand times: No.

Damon’s the kind of guy you get if LF is a complete sinkhole and paying $5m per marginal win might make the difference between going home with 89 wins and making the postseason with 92 wins. That’s not where the Mets are. There are so many problems in the lineup that the $10 m per it will take to get Damon are better spent elsewhere. I don’t think Pagan is going to have a good year but if it came down to getting Damon versus taking Harang or Arroyo in a salary dump from the Reds I’d much rather stabilize an ungodly weak rotation and take my chances with Angel repeating his 2009 season in 500 PAs.

Introducing Buddy Alderson, Sandy's dog, and the newest member of Puppy Avenue!

Embiggen here.
Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
