Defensive Statistic Question.
Quick question about the difference between these two metrics. I was just looking at Sean Smith's WAR data, which has been updated to include the 2009 season. I looked at Beltran's page where he had an astounding 4.4 WAR in 81 games. FanGraphs had him at a considerably lower, but still excellent 2.9 WAR for the year. The biggest difference between the two was Beltran's defensive numbers. His UZR was a paltry -4.8 while his TZ was a superb 13. How can the difference be so great between the number? I know UZR is the more advance stat, and better stat, and I also know UZR used Shea Stadium data in calculating it, which probably hurt Beltran's numbers. Finally, I've probably asked this before, but what were Beltran's Dewan numbers last season, just for further comparison.

Well, just to isolate the variation
Beltran’s Error and Arm ratings are about in line with what he’s put up over the last few years. It’s his Range that was much lower than usual. So, I feel, because Citi Field’s center field is larger than Shea’s, he could be letting a few more hits fall in. When these hits are put up against Shea’s smaller center field, it appears, to the Range equation, that his range has definitely decreased, while it’s really just the fact that half of his games are played in an environment where more hits are going to drop in center field than in Shea.

Dewan put him at +2
So the metrics are all over the place. I do think his D slipped a little bit this year based on watching him play but I’m no scout. I’d bet he was 0 < x < 5 defensively.

Measurement error
UZR relies on human observation of batted ball classifications and hit location – therefore, it will have a lot of errors in a small sample size. Over a couple seasons, you’ll see TZ and UZR align pretty well – but not in a half of a season.
