Matt Holliday
It is becoming increasingly clear that Bay is playing games with the Mets. There probably isn't a mystery team. There probably isn't another offer at all. They just want Omar to bid against himself. That said, I would pursue Matt Holliday hard. He's the better player anyway, and the money spent on Holliday would be more justifiable than that spent on Bay. I am not saying that Bay is a bad player, I am just saying that we shouldn't settle for second best. So then, the question becomes how much is a fair contract for Holliday ?. Here is my take on this. In 2005, when we signed Beltran, he was the top bat / OF available. We signed him for 7 years / 119 million, which averages out to 17 per. Holliday apparently wants more than that, but I haven't seen anyone account for inflation. I did a quick calculation, and found that $1 in 2005, is worth $1.15 in 2010, so with that in mind, why can't the Mets offer the same deal to Holliday and be done with it ?. I am not saying we should offer 7 / 135 which would be the same value as Beltran and account for inflation. Matt Holliday is a great player, but he ain't no Carlos Beltran. What I am saying is offer 7 / 120 or 17 per (same as the original Beltran contract, but the inflation adjustment makes it worth less even if it is the same salary). This would accomplish a number of things. It would get the media off the Mets' back. It would put Bay on the spot, and perhaps force him to accept. Besides the whole winning thing, the Mets are shoveling shit against the tide when it comes to public relations. This may just net us Matt Holliday, and go a long way towards repairing their image. Just my two cents. Economics majors, fire away.

While we're linked a lot more to Bay, the talk persists that we are still interested in Holliday at the same time, so...

I don’t think the Mets have any reason to go blow away Holliday with an offer right now because he, like Bay, doesn’t have many suitors. But, it makes NO sense that they haven’t at least offered something just to get into the Holliday “sweepstakes”. Even if they idiotically do prefer Bay to Holliday, at this point it’s important to 1) try and gain some leverage in the Bay negotiations if that really is their guy and 2) start working on a back-up plan on the off-chance that Bay really doesn’t want to be here.
It really is unfortunate that the Mets have these skewed perception of Bay/Holliday. Holliday is the better player and is just sitting there while they wait for Jason Bay to make a move. Makes no sense.
Hey, I got it,
Luis Castillo and his ’ bloated ’ (ha ha) 6 m per year, for Cabrera and his 126 m or so,
that’s one way of getting rid of Luis. I think Detroit might throw in some pizza and maybe a Chevy or two. That way there’s no need for Holliday/Bay.
really?
i’d take cabrera in a second if it only cost castillo. unfortunately, it will cost a lot more than that. and there’s no evidence that miggy is even available.
Agreed.
His jackassery seems more or less contained to an incident or two involving some exchanged words that, were he not a famous person, most people wouldn’t give two rats tails about (an apparent incident with his wife, where he was drunk and might or might not have been hit by her; nothing said anything about him hitting her, and another one a bit earlier that involved him threatening some diners in a restaurant that never actually amounted to anything). It’s not as if he does PEDs, or “grievous” things like that.
On the positive notes, he puts up monster numbers, he’ll turn 27 next season, and on a crazy awesome note, he’s a high priest of Santaria. K=Rod will have a buddy. Asides for the contract, and maybe the fact that he’s put on some weight, why wouldn’t any team want him?

If Scott Olsen is in any way related to Nellie Olesen, he deserved it.

He's a piece of garbage
He Brett Myresed his wife in October before the playoffs when he came home drunk. That said, him Wright and Reyes would be the best infield in baseball for the next 5-7 years. I’d love to get him if they’re looking to dump his contract.

...
maybe his wife had it coming? she probably didn’t have dinner, and cabreras a pretty big guy, he needs dinner.

yeah but looking at Miggy breakfast for him probably includes
a full turkey, a few steaks, and no less than 3 kinds of pie.

Uh...According to the reports, his wife hit him, not the other way around.
A la Wiki:
“Early morning on October 3, 2009, police were called to the Cabreras’ home and took Cabrera in for questioning. Cabrera had come home at 6:00am, after a night of drinking at the nearby Townsend Hotel, and got in an argument with his wife. He was seen later that day at a game at Comerica Park, with scratches on his face. Cabrera told reporters that the scratches came from his dog and refused to discuss the matter further. It was later reported he had a blood alcohol level of .26, three times the legal limit, when tested at the police station.”
No mentions of his wife being hurt, him hitting her, etc.

In the 911 call, she said he hit her

That changes things, then.
He’s a schmuck.

How do we know if either one wants to come here?
Neither one has come to NY to check out how great it is to live here. How about their families questions about schools, neighborhoods ect. I think at least in Bay’s case he doesn’t even want to be here but at least the Mets have shown him they are interested. Holliday hasn’t been shown any interst at all.
yes the school systems are better in St Louis

Well, the Mets haven't shown any interest for Holliday,
so why should Holliday show interest for the Mets?
If they're being paid millions
Couldn’t they just send their kids to the best private schools money can buy? I mean I feel like when you’re being paid upwards of 15 million a year quality neighborhoods and school systems aren’t going to be hard to find.

The Mets credit Bay's time as a CFer for the Pirates in 2005
as part of the reason they believe he’s at least as good if not a better fielder than Holliday.
Incredible, is it not?
Incredible is the only word I can think of
how do these people get paid to make baseball decisions?

Tell me about it.
I’d be happy to take a few months off each winter and run the Mets out of the goodness of my heart, just to save all you nice folks all this grief.
Well, I’d need the limo, but other than that I’m good.
