Projectprospect.com has been running a series on the top prospects in the minors for each position, going 15 deep at each position and 30 deep for pitchers. The Project Prospect philosophy is more about giving credit for high floors than some other big prospect pundit, though upside is still obviously considered. Here are the Mets farmies who appear in the rankings (rank on respective list in parenthesis):

John Niese, P (16)
Jenrry Mejia, P (18)
Fernando Martinez, CF (3)
Ruben Tejada, SS (13)
Reese Havens, 2B (5)
Ike Davis, 1B (7)

The Mets had no ranked players on the Catcher, Third Base, or Corner Outfield lists.

Just exploring the project prospect site a bit for the first time in a while. They have a listing of the youngest players by level. Here’s what the Mets have:

Low-A (I assume SSA and FSA)

1. Wilmer Flores
2. Jefry Marte

HiA

7. Francisco Pena
8. Jenrry Mejia

Double-A

2. Jenrry Mejia*
3. Ruben Tejada

*As of July 26, they only listed Tejada, and Mejia would have slid in just ahead of him, though I’m not sure what other changes may have been made to second half Double-A rosters.

Triple-A (As of May 19, 2009)

1. Fernando Martinez
11. Jonathan Niese
35. Dillon Gee
38. Jose Coronado
39. Eddie Kunz
43. Nick Evans

I’m assuming the Triple-A age level is scaled differently because of all the vets who play in Triple-A leagues. Still, the Mets had at least two of the three youngest players in three different leagues and the youngest player in Triple-A. I guess its not news, but its still pretty extreme.

I can't see the name

Jose Coronado now without wanting to bare my chest and challenge him to a fight

And the guy above Mejia/Tejada

Triunfel (or something like that i’m on my phone right now) was out the whole year (I think) so they were the youngest in AA.

They don't like Ike Davis for some reason.

I can't find the post

but back in September, Foster was saying he had an average season and not that good of a prospect. He had Eric Hosmer above Davis just a few weeks ago.

Foster

In the 1B ranking, published 10/18, Foster said of Davis:

Strong pro debut; contact is a concern; was among our favorite ’08 draft “sleepers.”

Hosmer was ranked 10th, 3 spots behind Ike.

I know

But just a few weeks ago, (actually months, it’s is from September 1) before the AFL, he had Hosmer ahead of Davis which was just absurd considering their respective seasons. This was their preliminary top 30 hitting prospects. They have Hosmer in the “strongly considered” with Davis nowhere to be found on the list. I like projectprospect, I just thought that was crazy as Hosmer was pretty bad last year, while Davis was great.

Sickels

has brought back the “long swing” issue. He said that he thought his swing looked a little long in the AFL. John ranked Ike 22 or so overall in his rotowire list, pre-AFL, which is a kinda fantasy list I think more than his book.

But nobody takes you seriously

Lets be honest, you’re no Eric Simon or James Kannengieser.

Seriously

His idea of prospects is like, Lastings Milledge and Mike Carp. (Totally joking Sam, don’t need another banhammer warning for speaking ill of the Carp!)

Really? No Thole?

If there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.

Well his catcher defense was awful last year

And since he doesnt really hit for power if he can’t stick at catcher he probably won’t stick on a major league roster.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
