Pineiro Mets top SP target?
This makes all sorts of sense, and if we could get him for 2/$16 million, that would be great.

How about three starters: Santana, Maine, Pelfrey, and 11 relievers
sign: Valverde, Dotel, McDougal, Calero, Beimel, Gregg, with K-Rod, Feliciano,
Igarashi, Parnell……………and yucks, Ollie.
That's really only 2.5 starters
Since we dont know how much of a workload Maine will make it through.

Sounds like Lou Piniella's strategy
where as the manager of the Devil Rays, he would throw out his RP, before a SP in the 2nd or 3rd inning. And of course, that didn’t work either.

I'm fine with Piniero
but I’d prefer if they brought in more than one starting option, and that one of those starting option=/ a Tim Redding like pitcher.

It depends on the contract, but I'd be fine with Piniero as well.

I hope he comes with Dave Duncan, as an added bonus
D.D. is really the only reason Piniero excelled last year. If he goes to another team, especially the Rockies or Phillies, he’s almost sure to get bombed.

Chapman
should be the top FA target. Get him in the high minors now.
Someone more proven for the minors?

Oh, come on.
You know what he meant. When we desperately need more than a few major league holes filled, and our best players are all reaching their peaks, signing prospects as our biggest offseason move is, in a word, stupid.

Yeah but when you consider how awful our recent drafts have been
and, since they don’t seem to have much interest in Holliday, there aren’t many FA signings that are going to be very impactful (in a positive way, Bay for 5+ years could be impactful in a negative way), yeah signing Piniero cheap for a short-term deal would be nice but it’s not the kind of deal that’s going to make or break 2009 for us. Signing a 21 year old with the type of upside Chapman has for the price, only 3-4 million per, IMO is going to have more of a long-term impact than any free agent not named Holliday.
I mean what free agents left on the market, that there’s actually a chance of them bringing in, i.e not second basemen since they’re not going to treat Castillo like a sunk cost, are going to fill those major league holes better than the pieces we already have?

Nay on Pineiro
I get a bad feeling about him. 8-9 M per year is way too much for a journeyman. Sheets is a better gamble. The Mets need to get rid of the Holliday-Bay-Molina-Pineiro aspirations. A power pitcher is what is needed.
Sheets hasn't thrown a pitch in the MLB since 2008
He’s also a large injury risk.
I’d rather have Piniero
If you were looking
to buy a 2002 truck with 120,000 miles on it, you would not pay full price. Pineiro is a high milage, inconsistent maybe who wants top dollar + multiple years, coming off of a career year (for him). If he was willing to take $5M+ reasonable incentives (maybe up to $7.5M) on a 1 year deal (so he’s playing for his next contract) then I say grab him. Sheets could be had for less than that, and a 3/4 value Sheets is better than Pineiro at 100%. I would prefer they don’t sign either, and use the money in the draft to pony up the way the Yankees do.
Point of fact:
Sheets most definitely does NOT want “less than that.”

Sheets
everyone here thinks he is great…we need to see him throw before we hand him a contract, he may have nothing left

not for 2010
he is a good signing as long as the plan is to send him to the minors and hope he developes over the next couple of years to become a solid lefty starter, or solid closer with that type of power arm

Also,
Pineiro is not a pressure guy. Yes, he did well in Seattle and St.Louis, but did not pan out as a reclaimation project in Boston. The Red Sox are good at evaluating players, and shipped him out for peanuts. If the Mets signed him, I could see him cracking under pressure ala Ed Whitson. Joel is basically a #3 starter, who could be valuable on smaller market teams like the Cards, Minnesota or Cleveland. The fact that none of the smaller market teams have scooped him up (like Gil Meche in KC) to be a #2 shows that he wants too much money/too long of contract. If the Mets had LaRussa and Dave Duncan then I could see him as a possible #2 guy. The amount of money he wants could be better spent elsewhere. If he can’t hack it in NY, the fans and the media will hate him, and set things farther back.

Jeff Weaver immediately comes to mind.

Weaver is another Perez
tons of talent, hints of greatness followed by weeks of nothing, I was a big fan of his when he first came up, but he never became consistant.

I liked my AAOP rotation:
Santana, Harden, Sheets, Penny, Pelfrey, Maine, Niese, Perez. Now I’ll go with Santana, Sheets, Pinero, Pelfrey, Maine, Niese, Perez. The Mets should really get Pinero as long as it isn’t a long term commitment.
As long as
it’s short term AND cheap. Otherwise, no dice.
Harden and Penny both signed one year deals for $7.5 million
and I think Sheets will be short term considering he didn’t pitch last year.
Sign; Bedard, Sheets, and Doug Davis,
Santana, Pelfrey………Maine to Set up role……..Ollie to Cleveland, KC or hell!
Yikes, that is a risky rotation.
I think you have to counterbalance a high upside signing like Bedard or Sheets (my preference) with someone like Garland or Piniero. I think, in general, you can really only have one of your rotation guys be as big of an injury risk as Bedard, Sheets, or Maine. So maybe something like Santana, Pelfrey, Piniero, Sheets, Ollie (he’ll be back, we just have to accept it) with Maine in the pen/emergency starter and Niese in the minors.
