Gregg Zaun signs with Brewers
Disappointing, he would've fit well with the Mets

i didnt know he'd sign so cheap
makes me feel shittier that the mets signed coste and blanco
The Rays had a $2m option on him they declined.
Zaun was a decent bet to sign for around that.

costs as much as Cora
Bengie + Cora > Zaun + Everett in Omar’s eyes?
A strong deal for the Brewers
Good for them. A small market team making a sound decision.

Fangraphs strongly disagrees
Zaun has been worth at least $5 million every year since 2004
2009 was the first year Blanco was ever worth that much
fangraphs doesn't have opinions
it’s because Zaun has been a starter and Blanco a backup. There’s probably a 1,000 PA difference in that span. Fangraphs also doesn’t include catcher defense.
fangraphs doesn't take catcher defense into account does it?
Plus Zauns usually had way more playing time and it’s a counting stat.
Right, but regardless of PA, Zaun has been the much better hitter over his career
And at very worst, he would’ve been a terrific platoon partner with Blanco
you guys are overestimating Blanco
Blanco has a projected .269 wOBA for next season, Zaun has a projected .313. Zaun is 39, Blanco is 38. Is the defensive difference enough to make up for 44 points of wOBA? I really don’t think so. Blanco’s defense would have to be 27 runs better than Zaun on defense for them to be equal.
AL Catcher
Even though I had the Mets signing Zaun in my AAOP, I’ve been wondering lately if it’s really a wise move. How much do you think it matters that he’s been a catcher in the AL (East) for the past 6 years? He doesn’t really know the NL batters, etc. I have a feeling that this plays a big role in the FO’s decision making. Just saying.
Another one bites the dust
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
this is bad news
because every time another catcher gets signed, it brings us this much closer to signing Molina to a bad contract. And Zaun is better than Blanco.
I'm not that disappointed (so long as Molina isn't signed)
I’d be willing to go with Santos/Blanco/Coste, at this point.

This beats the Blanco signing.
Zaun along with Santos, Coste, and Thole would have given the Mets a cheap catching consortium. Now the Mets need another catcher and it’s going to cost them more than the $1m difference between Zaun and Blanco.
