Asked by The Post late in the year how he felt about the catchers' defense and handling of the pitchers, [Dan] Warthen pursed his lips and said: "Next question."
This is why you were supposed to fire everyone after a disastrous season. All the survivors are going into job protection mode.

I hate Omir Santos
But I find this absolutely disgusting. How dare Warthen and Manuel try to pin the burden of a bad pitching staff on the team’s catchers?

This is somewhat ridiculous
I’ll admit our catching options weren’t stellar in their own right, but they can hardly be blamed for the combination of injuries, poor fielding, and awful pitch control exercised by the rest of the team. Catchers aren’t blameless in our terrible season but they were hardly the reason our pitching staff looked so awful.

Redding, Livan, Ollie and Pat Misch are bad pitchers any way you slice it.

Makes me feel real confident, yup...

from roto
“Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post reports the Mets were unhappy with Omir Santos’ defense in 2009.
The criticism extends to Brian Schneider. Schneider just signed a deal to become a Phillie while Santos is not expected back with the major league club. Given the Mets’ newfound depth, it’s likely Santos is traded or non-tendered. New York has signed catchers Chris Coste and Henry Blanco in an attempt to boost their catching depth ahead of 23-year old Josh Thole, considered by many the future catcher of the Mets.”
Wow, makes you wonder who's really in charge
B/c it’s pretty clear that Jerry loves Santos.

The current Mets coaching staff...
Self-serving, lying scumbags since 2007
That might sound harsh, but I really hate these people. Completely incompetent, always looking for someone else to blame — Heilman, Schoeneweis, Church, Santos/Schneider, etc.
With some of those guys, I see getting rid of them as PR moves, to appease the greater fanbase
Heilman and Schoenweis, when in 2007 or 2008 did you ever hear anything positive about them from the legions of WFAN callers, or posters at most other sites, or whatever else? Like when Schoenweis got booed at opening day, the greater majority of fans seemingly wanted their blood, and Minaya agreed. Most people forget that Heilman was one of the best members of the pen in ‘06 and ’07, or that Schoenweis pitched fairly decently in ’08, but whatever…Too late now, of course. We didn’t get anything out of it when we traded them, but it’s not like they were being awesome or anything like that. Given what the Cubs got back for Marquis, we could have very easily traded Heilman for Marquis straight up, and got him back (not that he’s awesome, but he would have provided some stability last season).

heilman
gave up a 2 run home run to yadier molina in game 7 of the NLCS. this negates everything in the mind of a fan.
Right, but it's not like he was one of the best bullpen guys around for the rest of the season.

sure
in 2005 he led the league after we stashed him in the bullpen with a 0.65 ERA…. in my opinion we shoulda kept him as a starter. his heart was never in the bullpen and once he realized that was the plan for good, he just kinda burned out. towards the end of 07 we had non-stop pitching injuries and we would let anyone but him start.
The biggest thing isnt getting rid of those guys
It’s kicking them on their way out of town that’s so classless. Jerry questioning Church’s toughness, Jeff calling trades of Scho/Heilman “addition by subtraction” that bothers me.

yeah the guy threw a 1-hitter
and then pretty much never got to start again… seemed odd to me when we needed all those spot starts that we never went to him.
by KeithsMoustache on Dec 5, 2009 4:52 PM EST up reply actions
I kept reading that as -1 hitter
and was confused but anyway. Apparently there were legit concerns about his throwing motion causing him injuries if he tried to be a full-time starter, which is why they tried to change it but once it was ineffective moved him to the bullpen and let him keep his arm-slot. Why they never allowed him spot starts though who knows.
thats definitely a legitimate concern for the long run
but I don’t think one or two spot starts down that stretch would have hurt him. They could have fixed him in the offseason. I dunno, just always found it curious that a guy that showed that kind of promise was shelved entirely and they never really seemed revisited the option of having him start.

I hope this means Omar has no intention on bringing in even medium named pitchers
Because he thinks getting new catchers will completely solve the rotation woes.
So I bet they get Molina, for his "catcher defense"
And that will be the point where I give up on the Mets.

you haven't given up yet?
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
That's just downright deplorable.
Doesn’t surprise me on Warthen’s behalf, though. Didn’t he pull a similar stunt on Pelfrey earlier this year.
I can’t fathom how those two were the ones to keep their jobs.
Do you know what's amazing?
Catcher defense is probably the only thing Santos did WELL last year, and will continue to do well in the future.

I agree but if the guy couldn't call games
Then why were they so enamored with him for so long and why didn’t they look into other catching options during the season?
and why would we not hear about that until now
You’d think one of the pitchers would say something.
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
AND, probably, potential trading partners don't really know how well he called games.
Santos WAS the kind of guy you can get something useful for in a trade. The chances of that happening now are, of course, reduced.
Brilliant.
