Bill Madden has the balls to say what we're all thinking
"Mets? Did somebody say the Mets? They won't spend the money for Holliday, Bay or Lackey and apparently, they're only interested in signing low-budget Latin players, having shown little or no interest in Byrd, Figgins, DeRosa, Wolf or even Staten Island's Jason Marquis, while waiting for their markets to come to them. At the same time, the Phillies and Braves wasted no time in addressing their needs. Sad."
It's so true. Omar is pretty obviously biased towards Latinos, and so he doesn't take full advantage of the market. It makes me sick.

... being a Mets fan is an acquired taste, BTW.

I assume he's talking about Chris Coste?

I think
Replacing the sitebot with a picture of the Cookie Monster telling Bert to “Shut the Fuck Up!” would be an adequate decision.
Beer is good! And stuff!
I don't think he has a bias towards latin players
I think he’s stuck in a view that players should be certain types, speedy/strong defensively, vs unathletic masher types and typically latin players are stereotyped as the former.
Basically I just think Omar’s dumb.

Yup
That’s why Ramon Castro confused him so much. Did not compute.

Is it more that Omar
doesn’t have a bizarre fascination for Jason Marquis just because he’s from New York? Isn’t the assumption that teams should favour local players as bad as that they should favour Latin players?
local players speak English
and lord knows those crusty old reporters prefer interviewing guys who speak english

Is it more that the journalist
has nothing to write about, and then attacks Omar for having latino players?
And yes, I think the journalist is a little racist here.
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
we have signed many more latin players than white/black/asian players during omar's reign
and most of the time they ended up getting exorbitant contracts
(also note that omar has tried to keep a token black and a token asian on the team, along with a couple of whites, at all times, so he has someone to point to when the accusations of racism come up)
A "Zeile" for avoiding outs
What the fuck?
Token players? Holy hell you are pushing some level of nonsense here.
Congratulations. You continue to set the bar lower for yourself as a commenter.

People who are into paperwork are into covering their asses, so if things go wrong they can point to all the work they did. They’re thinking more about failure than success. The more paperwork the opposition does, the better my chances are. Know what I’m sayin’?"
i'm actually not racist
i don’t mind having latinos on the team… i mind when 4/5ths of the team is latino and half of those latinos have giant undeserved contracts
A "Zeile" for avoiding outs
You're just making things up, by the way.
Take a look at the 40-man roster sometime.
"He's definitely mixing it into his repertoire. That's French for 'repertoire' " - Keith Hernandez
by Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright on Dec 6, 2009 3:04 PM EST up reply actions
by half he means Reyes of course
Except he is too foolish to know that Reyes’ contract is actually under market value
I count 39 guys on the 40-man roster right now
15 of Latin American heritage
24 American born Caucasian
0 Black
0 Asian
Thats about 38% to 62%. The estimated breakdowns for the entire league are as follows:
White: 60%
Latin American: 29%
Black: 8%
Asian: 3%
So basically, the Mets have four more Latin American players on their 40 man roster than the average MLB team, a typical number of white players, three fewer black players, and one fewer Asian players.
Clearly, undeniable evidence that Omar has a Latin bias.

And, more to the point, why do you care?
The roster could consist of 40 aliens from the planet Gleep-Glop and it wouldn’t matter a whit of those aliens could play good baseball and win games. People like yourself and Bill Madden throw in the extra focus on “Omar and his Latino players” when the real issue is just that Omar is not a very good General Manager. Adding in the race thing is inapposite to the real issue, and just throws gas on an already fiery subject.
I just want this team to win. I couldn’t care less where the players were born.

Many more?
His first move as Mets GM? Signing Kris Benson. He’s responsible for John Maine, Mike Pelfrey, Xavier Nady, Scott Schoenweis, Ryan Church, Brian Schneider, Shawn Green, Chad Bradford, Paul Lo Duca. etc.

here is a tip Metsguy234
Bill Madden knows nothing and cares less about the Mets. Relying on him for Mets news is like relying on Tiger Woods for marriage counseling.
no way jose

I actually sort of agree with Jose there
sure Madden made a racist comment, but he allowed to have his opinion. What the daily news should have done, is made Madden back up his claim and fine him for what he wrote if they feel it was wrong. I obviously don’t agree with the comment, but I’m a strong believer in free speech and sine it made it through editing once, so they didn’t have a problem with it until the backlash. I understand what the Daily News did, they are a company that depends on people buying their paper and a comment like that threatens their sales. Editing the article just seems disingenuous to me, that they don’t care or respect their readers. The last thing a paper wants is to be at the center of a racism debate, but if that’s how the author feels, let him expand on the comment, or retract the statement.
"We must win and we must know how to win rather than win because we have statistical people."
i didn't really read the comment.
i just wanted a chance to say “no way jose”.
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf"
-Tug McGraw
yea, this
it’s a stupid opinion, but he has a right to it, and it’s disingenuous for them to edit it out like it never happened.

whatever guys
that’s all the talk amongst the mets fans i know, how omar is racist because he only signs latinos… i didnt even explicitly call him racist… i guess you guys are all holier than thou though
A "Zeile" for avoiding outs
We're not holier than thou
We’re looking at the evidence which suggests very strongly that Omar isn’t biased towards acquiring Latino players. Among the players he’s signed/traded for: Billy Wagner, Tom Glavine, Brian Schneider, Ryan Church, Jeff Francoeur, John Maine, Gary Sheffield, Cory Sullivan, Jeremy Reed, JJ Putz, Xavier Nady, Scott Schoenewies, Chris Coste, Kris Benson, Shawn Green, Chad Bradford, Darren Oliver, and Aaron Sele. None of those players are remotely Hispanic.
Were I a more cynical person, I might suggest that the whole “Los Mets” meme was actually started by people who are bothered by the Mets having a Hispanic GM, and want him to fail. Oh wait, I am that cynical.

Guys, I think you all have it wrong
it’s so obvious that Omar goes out of his way to sign/trade for nothing but crappy hispanic players, like Johan Santana, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, and Pedro Martinez. Without Omar, those guys wouldn’t even be able to play in the Atlantic League. And don’t even get me started on the fact that he hasn’t released Jose Reyes yet

and he just couldn't wait to release Marlon Anderson last year, huh?

So you're saying he's a racist for signing HOF type latin players
while signing only mostly crappy white guys? That he’s trying to make whites look bad?
/kidding
greek is latin too?
what countries aren’t latin? Maybe this post was actually a clever way of saying we’re really all latin players and his problem with Omar is that he signs any players at all. I could almost support that idea, because pretty much every time Omar does something these days I die a little on the inside.
