Mets interested in Meche
Not a great pitcher, but had a little bit of an unlucky season with a BABIP of .321, .24 points higher than normal. If we can get DeJesus back in this deal without giving up much, then we should absolutely do it. Meche makes $12 million in 2010 & 2011, and DeJesus makes only $4.7 million this year and $6 million next. That would be a steal. If we really want to fleece them, I'd also try and get either Kila Ka'aihue or Johnny Giavotella back as well.

not to mention Brian Bannister or Disco Hayes.
or, uh, Zach Greinke. We could sneak him in there too.

Disco Hayes is rule 5 eligible, and as of right now we have the 7th pick with the 6 teams in front of us having full 40 man rosters.
Bring on Disco Stu…

Me too
Coming off an injury, Meche gives cause for concern. This deal could make sense for the Royals. They get to save six million for the next two years with a Castillo, Pagan- Dejesus, Meche swap.
The problem is that they already have a second baseman. They traded for Goetz from the chisox.
Well they already have Callaspo too
and it’s debatable whether Getz should be considered a starter at all. I’d like to get Aviles from them.
wasn't his injury back related?
or, by “arm” do you mean “body”?
"[The Giants] beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. ... It wasn't even close." - Raheem Morris, 9/27/09
That seems more likely
What do you think the trade package would look like? I would have to think Pagan carries more value than Meche. Meche’s arm might be shaky, coming off a bad year, and he will be making $12M for the next two years. Pagan is cheap, and was productive last year. He is far from a safe bet, but the salary relief I would think is big. That is why the Royals would have to sweeten the pot, IMHO.
I like Sam’s idea of Aviles. He would provide solid back-up for Reyes and Castillo/Hudson. Heck he could slot in to start at second.
It should also be noted that way the Royals framed their interest in Pagan was hilarious. “we really like Pagan, and we would even be willing to send Guillen”. Very cheecky, because we all know that they would fall all over themselves to send Guillen to a team in exchange for a warm body.

How long does a body stay warm after death?
Guillen for a corpse…sounds fair to me.

I wouldn't mind trading Pagan
but not if we’re getting back a player with $24 million on his contract, little upside and injury risk. But if the Mets want to trade Pagan for a young, team-controlled second baseman like Aviles or Callaspo, I think that would be a great move. It’s a much better option than signing Hudson to a three-year deal.
I want no part of Gil Meche's contract, thank you very much.

What if we sent them Francoeur and Castillo for him?

I'm not even sure that would be better
I would definitely say Castillo is more worth his contract than Meche is at this point, with all his injury concerns, Meche is owed twice as much Castillo and could conceivably end up being as bad as Ollie.
And not only would we be taking on that extra 12 million, or 9 million if Frenchy gets 3 million, or God forbid more when Omar signs him to a 20 year extension, we’d then have to spend money to fill 2nd base, along with filling the hole losing Frenchy creates, I’m not a frenchy fan but if we don’t pay him some ridiculous amount/start him (who am I kidding), he’s at least a serviceable bench player/4th outfielder type.
So we’d be taking on 9-12 million + the money to fill 2nd base and another outfielder and not even certain be getting better, or even equal, production than what’s available on the market, since you could likely sign Marquis/Wolf to similar or even cheaper contracts with less risk. If there were better 2nd base options to be had, most likely I imagine we’d just end up with Castillo part deux, though it’d be nice if they’d go after someone like Lopez, or we were more cash strapped I’d consider it but I don’t think it’s a smart move given the market/the amount of money they should have to spend.
I still don't want to go there
Castillo isn’t as much of an injury risk as Meche, I don’t think. And, I don’t mind Francoeur in left for just one more season, given that he isn’t making all that much money. If we trade both for Meche, along with paying for Meche’s contract, we also need to sign a second baseman and a starting left fielder.

I value Castillo at around 3 million per for the next two years.
Meche, otoh, is tough to figure. Even with the off year he was around a 1.5 WAR pitcher. James projects him as respectable next year in around 150 innings. Is that worth 6-7million? I’d say it all comes down to the MRI, but if you add Meche then you need to go after one of the high upside durable guys, like Arroyo or Harang. You can’t skimp on both additions to the rotation.
By the way, the Mets desperately needed Placido Polanco. Now they desperately need Mark DeRosa or Kelly Johnson. I have no sense whatever that Omar understands this.
Hang on. This could really hurt:
“According to Sherman, although the Mets are not interested in swapping Luis Castillo for Jose Guillen, they could engage the Royals in switching out Castillo for Meche, ‘possibly by taking another bad contract, such as those belonging to relievers Kyle Farnsworth or Juan Cruz.’
The 33–year-old Farnsworth is due $4.25 million in 2010, while the 31–year-old Cruz is due $3.75 million; and both can be made free agents at the end of next season."
So Castillo is worth around $6 mil over his 2 year, $12 million contract
Meche might be worth, on average, $7 mil per over his 2 year, $24 million contract.
I’ve been thinking that to do this deal the Royals would have to pay the difference: about $2 million a year. If the Mets think they have to take on a bad contract to get Meche without any salary relief, they’re idiots.
