Adam Everett Re-Signs With Tigers
According to the team's official Twitter. Terms of the deal not available yet but when they are it will be fun to compare with the Alex Cora contract.
Edit: Per Ken Rosenthal, it's for 1 year and $1.55 million. Fangraphs provides some instant analysis. Cora got $2 million plus a vesting option. Who knows if Everett would have signed with the Mets but there is nothing to suggest the defensive superstar was even considered. However, Omar Minaya will be meeting with Bengie Molina's agent tonight.

Adam Everett Hates Baseball
He would be terrible in the clubhouse. During spring training he will go up to Jerry Manuel and say, “See, I’ve got it right here in my contract. It says I don’t have to do any calisthenics that I don’t feel are necessary.” He will take Jose Reyes clubbing.
In short, he will be the opposite of Alex Cora, a grinder’s grinder.

Cool.

Patience is a virtu he doesn't posses.
I guess Adam did not want to wait for Luis Castillo to be traded.

I think you're thinking of Kennedy
not Everett.
the number one issue facing the Mets is finding that one guy who’s going to say "get on my shoulders and ride me to the championship."

You are correct. I brain farted pretty loudly. To make things easier for me, maybe we can start calling them A1 and A2.

mmm A1 steak sauce
If there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.

KRos says $1.55 M. Though he has that history of not always being right and everything.

That sucks. I guess there’s still hope for a Brandon Phillips trade.

I want Minaya gone
The problem is that I don’t trust Wilpon to hire someone better. I expect someone like Ricco.
I want Jack Z.

$500,000 +/- isn't a lot, in the baseball world, but that's the salary of some no-name who could make all the difference in September...

Only if you drafted him
If you drafted him, paid a big signing bonus, spent 3-6 years developing him in your minor leagues, where you are paying for coaches, staff, etc, yeah you might get a guy who could make a difference. But it’s not like there is easily identifiable good potential MLB talent floating around very often in the ranks of minor league FA or available off the waiver wire. I’d say 95% of those guys will hurt your team more than help.
If you’ve got a young player who has even the potential to become a future starter, yes you go cheap and let him develop rather than get maybe an extra 10-15 runs from a guy like Cora. But if your best internal option is Anderson Hernandez, it’s worth every penny to actually get some production from your bench.
At FA market rate, a win is worth near $4.5M. I’m sure teams set out to pay a bit lower, but that’s about what they actually pay. A half million therefore is worth about 1/9 of a win.

Is Anderson Hernandez a worse option than Cora though?
Or Awful Reyes for that matter?
by Gina on Dec 8, 2009 9:48 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
maybe
Hernandez is only 27 next year, so it is possible he could take another step forward. That one could actually be close by next season. But I don’t think Cora will prevent you from carrying him if he looks good in ST, either.

I want
Andy Hernandy to play 2B. He fields pretty well there, and is essentially free. If they could swap Castillo for something half-decent, I would be reasonably happy with that.

I realise that is a
heavily-caveatted post.
by deadspy3 on Dec 9, 2009 11:45 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
But I mean that's kind of he point
That there are players who could conceivably be just as good or better than Cora that can be found just through ST invites and paid the minimum, so why is resigning Cora, to 2 million, a priority?
by Gina on Dec 9, 2009 4:28 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That money can be used in the draft.
If Damien Magnifico ever gets major league playing time for some other team, I’ll be sad.
by TheBigStapler on Dec 8, 2009 11:12 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That I agree
If you are investing in all those minor league coaches and running that system anyway, why not spend on the best prospects? If you sign 10 guys for $1M each, you still only need to get 2.5 wins out of production out of the group of them to be coming out ahead. You don’t even need one of them to become a starter. If one becomes a good bench or bullpen guy for 2-3 years that might do it.
by acerimusdux on Dec 8, 2009 12:58 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Apparently the issue with him
and a few other guys wasn’t even money. It was that they never contacted them until months after the draft, when a lot of them had already decided to go to college and even move into their dorms.
