Cardinals sign Brad Penny.... for $7.5 m
Plus $1.5m in incentives....um, just, wow.
I think this overtakes Cora's deal in terms of pure stupidity.

but with their pitching coach being as good as he is, i’ll probably be eating those words in a few months. Does seem a bit much though.
Its really not bad at all
Penny has only been worth less than that in 2008 (injured, 17 starts) and 2000 (rookie season, 22 starts). Penny was actually one of the better FA pitcher options. There is a good arguement that he is better than Wolf, Marquis, Garland, and Sheets, and very close to Pinero and Harden.
He's been a below average pitcher the last 2 years
And it would’ve been way smarter for the Cardinals just to resign Piniero.
Pieniero would cost more.
And he’d want multiple years.

Not much more
And if he can replicate even a sliver of what he did last year, he’s a much better pitcher
Yes
My gut reaction was “What the hell are the Cardinals thinking?”, but if Penny is healthy he’ll be worth $7.5 million or more, and it’s only a one-year deal (apparently).
Ouch. Must be paying for him per pound.
