Biz Of Baseball: Two Clubs Have No Analytics Team
Per Maury Brown:
While there has been a sense that sabermetrics is now part of MLB, some are using it only sparingly, while two clubs have yet to get on-board with the objective analysis world, at all.
The Mets employ some sort of analytical group so it's not them. Any guesses?

One of them is the Twins.

Tough question,
I would go with Marlins just based on payroll limitations and the Twins.
the number one issue facing the Mets is finding that one guy who’s going to say "get on my shoulders and ride me to the championship."

It's the Yankees.
they don’t need no stinkin’ analysis…..they just hav bags full of cash, which is just as good as money.
you know what I'm sayin' ?

That's definitely not true.
A friend of mine does analytics for the Yankees.

We all know Yankees have no friends.

that may be so, but they have Granderson
having essentially given up Phil Coke to get him.

twins and cubs sound about right
i would think they are teams that have had some flux with ownership the past few years.
Management on the way out would be less likely to change a philosophy.

The Reds
Didn’t Walt Jocketty beef with the Cards owner, because the owner wanted him to rely more on the analytical wing. I think he actually left because of it.

The Royals...right?
Have you seen some of the trades they’ve made? Check out Joe Posnanski’s blog for anything about Yunel Escobar…

Yuniesky Betancourt I think you mean
but Royals was my initial instinct too.

Please...
Yunel Escobar and Yuniesky Betancourt should never be confused.

Sorry about that...
I meant Yuniesky Betancourt, but I’m pretty freaking tired right now…

Brian Bannister is the Royals analytics department

Yeah--KC is a strong candidate.
How else can you voluntarily trade for Betancourt?
by SeanSchirmer on Dec 20, 2009 5:32 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think so.
they have a department.
by Sam Page on Dec 8, 2009 12:37 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If they do have one...
they have to be one of those teams that use it “sparingly.”
by boom_roasted on Dec 8, 2009 1:07 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Twins definitely
And I actually don’t think the other one is the royals because I remember a report from a year or two ago that their analytical department had stumbled upon this wonderous thing known as obp, so if nothing else they at least exist.
Maybe the Cubs or Phillies?

Arizona Diamondbacks
….just judging by today’s trade news.
by acerimusdux on Dec 8, 2009 2:43 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
haha does make you wonder doesnt it
what were they thinking?
by KeithsMoustache on Dec 8, 2009 2:57 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
My theory
They really like Ian Kennedy?
Sorry, that’s the best I could come up with.
by acerimusdux on Dec 9, 2009 2:12 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
They're supposed to have one of the most advanced analytical departments in the NL
which is why my mind is f**ked over this trade.
by Gina on Dec 8, 2009 3:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah I keep thinking there must be more to it
But no they traded 5 years of a front-line starter in Scherzer for an arbitration eligible middle of the rotation player, and Ian Kennedy, never mind throwing in a cheap possibly future closer. There’s just no way to look at it where it makes sense.
by Gina on Dec 8, 2009 6:04 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
When I'd heard the rumor, pre-Kennedy, i thought it was some sort of joke
A back end unproven commodity doesn’t make it any better
by JayWise on Dec 8, 2009 7:04 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I guess they want to attempt a run while Webb/Haren are still around
Scherzer has a high ceiling and could easily be the better pitcher down the line, but next season, you’ll probably get similar performance except Jackson will give you more innings per start and isn’t the same level of injury risk. And if Kennedy is serviceable, they save a few million on a starter in FA that can be spent on a bat, even accounting for Scherzer/Jackson salary diff.
Not saying I agree with the trade, just that it isn’t completely insane.
by dgriot on Dec 8, 2009 8:34 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not even sure I believe that
That Jackson will be even/more innings than Scherzer, maybe more innings but I think Jacksons due for a pretty significant regression, Plus they got 170 innings out of Scherzer not actually bad for a guys second year I’m not sure why he couldn’t be expected for more next season. I really can’t believe/see any way how Jackson gives you a better chance next year than Scherzer.
by Gina on Dec 8, 2009 8:44 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Eh
I’d rather have Scherzer too, but it’s not a 100% given that Scherzer, a guy working through control/mechanics issues and coming off his first huge innings bump, switching to the AL Central will outperform Jackson in the NL West in 2010.
by dgriot on Dec 8, 2009 10:44 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah but the switch to the AL shouldnt be factored in
Since we’re talking about whether he’d be better for the D-backs next year.
by Gina on Dec 8, 2009 10:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
True - it should only factor for Jackson
which might’ve mitigated some of the increasing flyball/outperforming peripherals concerns. Also that Jackson arguably isn’t a finished product yet.
by dgriot on Dec 8, 2009 10:56 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
He's not
But neither is Scherzer, and even as not a finished project he was worth more last year, and at a fraction of the cost.
by Gina on Dec 8, 2009 11:09 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Scherzer wasn't worth more last year, though
Jackson had more innings pitched (214 v 170.1), a lower ERA (3.62 v 4.12) a higher WAR (3.5 v 3.2), etc.
Sure, Scherzer had better peripherals, but that didn’t translate to being worth more purely from a 2009 results perspective. It could in 2010, but the Dbacks are betting that the control issues won’t resolve themselves that quickly + Jackson can continue to give similar results as ‘09 w/ the league change, I reckon’.
by dgriot on Dec 8, 2009 11:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
According to TRA he was
2.8 WAR, Jackson, vs 3.5 Scherzer, in like 40 less innings.
by Gina on Dec 9, 2009 12:43 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I guess with TRA, Jackson will be penalized more severely for the liners/flyballs
Anyway, we both agree it was silly to trade Scherzer for Jackson and I’m done playing Devil’s Advocate on this particular subject. :)
