Yankees acquire #1 pick in Rule 5 Draft
I was not aware that this was what they swapped Bruney for. It's actually a really smart move in that they should be able to replicate Bruney's production (and probably more) for about $1.5M less.
From our perspective it sucks; though we're the 7th pick overall there was a good chance we were going to be the first team to select someone.

There must be someone in particular they have their eye on
This was how the Twins nabbed Johan, correct?

Not exactly,
I believe the Marlins wanted someone at the Twins pick (who had a earlier pick) so they worked out a deal where the Marlins got what they wanted and the Marlins selected and gave them Johan.
the number one issue facing the Mets is finding that one guy who’s going to say "get on my shoulders and ride me to the championship."
probably
but it probably has as much to do w/ bruney really playing his way off that team/reaching arbitration years than anything else.
either way, hopefully the yankees don’t have the same pick in mind that i do for the mets.

Who's that? Aneurys Rodriguez?
I can’t imagine its one of the risk/reward type pitchers like him, though I guess it could be, since the value in those guys seems to lie beyond having to keep them on the roster all year.

it is rodriguez
and while you’re right that he’ll most likely be a multi-year project, i see no reason why he can’t maintain a spot in the bullpen as a hard throwing righty with decent if inconsistent secondary stuff. thats basically brian stokes though rodriguez could even make spot starts.
i mean the kid posted a solid year in AA at 21, including a 2.22 era in the 2nd half. doesn’t walk a lot of guys, gave up far fewer hits than IP and he struck out a pretty good number as well. there are better candidates for the pen next year (i like stephen wright from CLE) but few with as much upside as rodriguez.

Yeah that's true I suppose
And after dealing away Bruney and Coke the Yanks could use some relief arms. I wouldn’t be at all upset if the Mets drafted him, but I’d be really worried that Omar would somehow bungle it and wind up returning him in the middle of May to make room for Nelson Figueroa so he can spot start for a guy who winds up going on the DL by his next turn in the rotation anyway.

I like John Shelby
White Sox OF, good power and speed. Not quite ready, but worth the gamble.
so do i
i like him better at 2b though, unless he can really stick in center.

Dumb ass Nats. I'd rather keep the Rule 5 pick than Brian Bruney. I mean, who is Brian Bruney, right?

perhaps the deal is contingent upon them picking someone the yankees want and then immediately trading him as a PTBNL

Yup gotta be this
Which is why you have to figure the Yankees have some particular unprotected player in mind here.

Everyone hates us, for whatever reason.
What did we do to the world? I’ve seen comments from, like, Indians fans, that were very negative towards the club, and the people on it. What’s that about? From the Phillies, Braves, or Yankees, I can understand. From teams like the Marlins, Red Sox, or the Diamondbacks, it makes sense, given some of our collective back-and-forth history. But the Indians? I mean…
