No matter what Omar screws up this week, at least we have some good news...

This would be better news if he was taking Jayson Stark with him.

It's not
He may have been a little Red Sox biased, but he was still a class act, and much better than most of the clowns that inhabit ESPN
He was more than a little Red Sox biased, which works for NESN.
I’d like to see ESPN become a little less Red Sox/Yankees oriented.

I don't think Gammons leaving will have any effect on that
I imagine they’ll just find someone dumber… I mean they’re idea to improven up Sunday Night baseball booths was to ADD steve phillips.

Oh lord that is a depressingly accurate point.

I never really had a problem with Gammons,
he started using OPS earlier than some other MSM though he kind of stopped there. But his analyst was alright and, more importantly, to me anyway, his love of baseball seemed incredibly sincere. Baseball season will be a bit without him around.
the number one issue facing the Mets is finding that one guy who’s going to say "get on my shoulders and ride me to the championship."
Gammons>Everyone else at ESPN
excluding Bobby V
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
Thats not saying much, except that Bobby V kicks ass

Rob Neyer is better
but Neyer barely qualifies as a writer anymore, so other than him you might be right. Maybe Keith Law, though I don’t really read his stuff ever.

This is not a good thing
Sure, Gammons loved the Red Sox and was always an apologist for players, but it’s hard to hate him. The guy truly loved baseball, revolutionized the way it was covered and embraced a new way of looking at the game while his peers were/are referring to bloggers in their moms’ basements.
completely disagree
this is a bad thing. gammons is one of the few reasons why i’ll still pay attention to espn for baseball info. his bias is overrated (in that he knows A LOT more about the sox than any other team but still pays attention to all of them) and he is about as reliable as they come. he knows his prospects (not just the top ones), he is pretty statistically inclined and theres no “unnamed scouts” or completely made-up trade rumors coming out of gammons which is saying something nowadays. do you realize this means buster olney is now the top baseball insider there? thats scary

No this is a good thing...
Gammons will now probably start his own private blog, which will be cool. Plus, you got to feel for a guy who spends so much time with all those morons at ESPN.
Honestly...
I wonder if (and hope) his health is okay.

That's good news I think
I like Gammons, and pretty much don’t watch ESPN anymore. Gammons and Leiter will be pretty good – they just need to get rid of Harold Reynolds.
What, you don't like Reynolds.
When him and Leiter are together, they’re pretty funny. Sometimes I can’t tell if Leiter is actually taking it personally or not.

NESN says that they got him
but MLB is saying the same thing

A "Zeile" for avoiding outs
Gammons story
I saw Gammons walking along Beacon Avenue in Brookline, MA on his way to cover the 2007 ALCS at Fenway Park. I wondered briefly if he’d be able to get me into the game if I asked, but I just walked past him without saying anything. But I do love the he walks to work!
Gammons could get a little annoying with a the Red Sox stuff.
Not so much that he talked about them a lot, I get that since he follows the Sox more closely than anyone else. It was the way he would just throw our rumors about how the Red Sox were interested in [insert any team’s star player here] as if a trade were feasible or beneficial to anyone besides the Red Sox.
That said, he was better than 99% of the jerks employed by ESPN.
Goog luck gammons
Always liked that guy. Fellow Tar Heel alumni bias.

My dad was ‘55. Haven’t been back in a while but I love it down there. If you see Roy Williams tell him to call a time out now and then.
