Amazin' Avenue Fantasy League?

With pitchers and catchers about to report, that can only mean one thing: it's time for fantasy baseball.

Star-divide

I'm hoping there's enough interest for this to work. I was thinking H2H, points-based, 10-12 people, AL/NL mixed league, either CBS Sports or Yahoo.  I'll wait to see if there's a concensus preference for either one before setting it up.  To keep things friendly (and simple), we'll just use a free league, unless people really are willing to pay an entry fee.  Not that I don't trust you guys, but collecting all of the money can be a pain.  They're less customizable, but the price is right.  I'll open it up to the first 11 respondents.  Won't schedule the draft until much closer to Opening Day, so a response right now isn't an absolute commitment, but it's always more fun without dead teams.

Count me in.

I’ve been playing fantasy baseball for four years now. The first year I was involved we were drafting teams out at sea on a white board. It was exruciatingly painful but in the end it was fun as hell. The last two years I’ve been involved in a $50 per head league. No more than 10 entrants. I don’t have a problem w/a “fee”, but normally I like to see how well a commissioner keeps up w/the league prior to committing myself.

My opinions about the different ’venue’s for the leagues:
ESPN – Great interaction, easy to use / manipulate / amend. However, normally early in the season it has bugs. Can’t access it at work.

MLB – Lousy. You can only make roster changes for the week ahead. Once the week begins, you’re stuck w/that roster for the remainder of the week. Don’t care for the point system for pitchers.

Yahoo – By far my favorite. Extremely easy to use. CAN access it at work. Nuff said.

CBS Sports – Never seen their FanBball site.

I’ll be standing by commish.

P.S. I’m much easier to get along with in the FanLeague than I am here on the blog.

I'm in but I'm against H2H

I find H2H good for football but for baseball’s random, long season, I feel like the champ should be decided by accumlated points, whatever you guys feel like.

Oh and yahoo ftw.

roto is pretty bad though

first half dominance = win. too hard to come back from shitty performances by your players pre-ASB. h2h allows a chance to come back.

by gogomets on Feb 11, 2009 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

I concur

In the ESPN league last year (only eight teams) we played H2H and I was hanging in their by the skin of my teeth. W/some shrewd, post all-star trades I got back into the mix and was respectable in the playoffs.

Due to the popular vote though, I’ll conform to whatever the commish (DON’T BE A SELIG!) wants.

Me, Lou, Gina, IanB, samt, Reg Dunlop, Sokojoe, ams258, Gina, Meddler, squid92, BlackOps, englishgrey, and yellomellojello. I suggested H2H b/c I’ve used it for hockey for a couple of seasons now, but since there seems to be a preference for straight up roto, we’ll use that. Might as well make it more fun for people. Also, having an uneven number of owners isn’t a factor. There’s definitely a consensus on Yahoo, which isn’t a problem. I’ll set it up with a live draft.

Very good idea.

I think I have to set the draft ahead of time. Is there a particular day that definitely won’t work for people? I’m thinking late March, early April at the latest. Or at least a day of the week that doesn’t work at all?

by BobbyV_Incognito on Feb 11, 2009 9:19 PM EST up reply actions

Bobby! Don't be a SELIG!

Assign a day. If you ask what’s good for people, you’re going to get a dozen different answers.

Drive this bus homeboy!

The season starts a little bit later this year. Players aren’t going to want to draft early due to a number of things such as; unforeseen injuries, certain major leaguer’s playing like complete crap (even though they’re not going to see THAT MUCH time and it’s only spring training) and people also want to do some deep analysis. Especially the geeks here on AA.

So, pick a time late in Spring Training. This gives everyone ample opportunity to set aside a day and time for the draft. If people can’t budge from that day, try and be flexible. If people can’t make it due to emergencies and/or unforeseen events at the last minute, see if they’re comfortable w/you drafting for them.

Set the rules my man & let’s do the damn thing! :-)

Two things I can’t stand during fantasy baseball:

  • Participants not keeping up w/their respective team.
  • Dumping / adding pitchers everyday to add to their Win & Strikeout total. Yes, yes, yes, I know. It could also negatively effect their Losses & WHIP. But that’s rarely the case. Completely bogus. Please put a cap on roster additions / adjustments.

Hell, do what you want. It’s your league. But man, those are two of my biggest pet peeves on fantasy baseball. I’m lookin’ forward to making you stat nerds eat my dust.

If this doesn't make you laugh, nothing will.

Check out the categories a friend of mine set up for his league. Warning! Some are totally off the wall, but that’s why I like them. Something different and fresh.

Batting: R – H – HR – RBI – SB – AVG – CYC – SLAM (CYC – hit for the cycle. SLAM – Grand Slam).

Pitching: W – CG – SHO – SV – K – ERA – NH – PG (NH – No hitter. PG – Perfect Game).

I’m asking him to get rid of SHO and install WHIP. Other than that, I love it.

Yeah. The PG would basically give a player/team a point each for

PG, SHO, CG, W, ERA, NH. But you know what. It’s those weeks when your team does it that the other team does it as well. Man, I hate when that happens. The impossible happens for both teams playing against each other. You’d have a better chance at winning the lottery.

Fantasy Mets experiment

I’ve put together an all Mets squad in one of the Yahoo leagues I joined. Just wanted to see how it plays out. The squad is comprised of all Mets w/only a few exceptions. Problems I’ve already discovered with this kind of experiment:

1. In the draft (auto), didn’t get Wright or Reyes. Drafted DeRosa and Escobar. (Not bad supplements)
2. I’m gonna take it in the a$$ in the saves category, so I had to go shop around for another closer. Trying to pick up Sherrill off the waiver wire as we speak.

This ought to be interesting to see how well they can do. …Or not.

other than Beltran, Santana, and Frankie, who on the Mets is even valuable? I mean, Delgado’s got some value, but he’s probably a borderline top-10 first basemen, if that. The International cont.

Yeah, a great deal of the movie is a bit much to digest considering the fact that the inside story is hard to follow. If you’re into history, banking, dirty deals and if you have patience, it’s fine to watch. Like I said, it would take a couple of viewings to really absorb all of the info.

It's your lucky day!

I’ve seen Frost / Nixon in its stage format at the Kennedy Center here in D.C. and I’ve seen it on the silver screen. Mother fell asleep 20 minutes into the stage version. (I had to elbow her every other 5 minutes. Quite embarrassing. Still love her though). Stacey Keech performed admirably, but something was lacking with the rest of the cast.

The film version was splendid. (Damn, I just realized that Rebecca Hall “hottie” played Michael Sheen’s girlfriend in the movie Frost / Nixon. I just saw her in the movie; Vicky Cristina Barcelona as well. Now that’s a DAMN GOOD FILM!)

I don't know why that comment makes me laugh...

…but it does. Why do you hate it? Is it because of the manner in which people must traverse the spiral walkway?

Because there's nothing there.

I went there this past Christmas, and sure enough, there was an entire floor with just a blank wall which was supposed to be part of the exhibit, and the same projection of a model of a city on several walls. Plus, the photographer that was featured was awful.

WHOA! Hey BobbyV. Check out this lineup I received in a Yahoo league.*

C – A.J. Pierzynski
1B – Ryan Howard
2B – Chone Figgins
3B – Aubrey Huff
SS – Jimmy Rollins
OF – Vladimir Guerrero
OF – Nate McLouth
OF – Corey Hart
Util – David Ortiz
BN – Denard Span
BN – Adam Jones
BN – Jeff Clement

My pitching rotation is somewhat weak. I’ll have to get out my Scott Boras / Andrew Rosenhaus Screw The League guidebook of fantasy baseball to swindle some suckers out of some pitchers.

This is the kind of bull-pucky I’d expect from KingC, JNY and Anonymous. Not Bobby. Not CJ. Hell, even CPP has been more diplomatic lately. (To be honest, he hasn’t had anything to say to me in a while. Maybe he just hates my ever-lovin guts – Hey CPP! Thhhpppptttt!! j/k fella :-)

2B – Castillo
3B – De Rosa (Indians)
SS – Escobar (Braves)

The real pain in the rectum is going to be to stay up to date with Manuel’s lineup. I’m going to have to be ‘Johnny on the Spot’ when it comes to roster changes.

Analysis? Be brutal nice!
P.S. Some fool wanted a straight up trade: Ortiz for K-Rod! What the hell is wrong with some people?

Oh hells yes you have to see it.

I’ve been anxiously awaiting Inglorious Basterds for months now. That teaser was like Christmas in February.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Feb 17, 2009 6:09 PM EST up reply actions

OK, made a few changes.

Scoring: Dropped starts for K/9 for pitchers. Added K for batters. Dropped the bench from 6 to 4. I was trying to keep the number of stat categories equal for batters and pitchers, but pitchers currently have one less.

Here’s what we have so far:
R, H, 2B, 3B, HR, BB, SO, SB, OPS, RBI
W, L, SV, INN, SO, BB, ERA, WHIP, K/9

Just to confirm:
Are we H2H
or
Roto?

We're penalizing a player for striking out

why don’t we go dusty baker style and score points for moving-the-runner-overs.

I kid of course, but I did like the idea of keeping batters and pitchers even.

by Sokojoe on Feb 20, 2009 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

I'd drop the SO's for hitters.

Striking out is just like every other out.

true, but

any category that makes Ryan Howard less valuable is o.k with me (but I’m not playing, so don’t listen to me)

by cjmulrain on Feb 20, 2009 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

Right now, I'm keeping it as is.

But like I said, I’d like to keep both sides even. If we don’t add another scoring category for pitchers, I’ll just drop Ks from the hitters.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Feb 20, 2009 6:21 PM EST up reply actions

Is there a category for steroid takers?

Don’t mind me, I’m 1/2 drunk and pissed off that I’m 1/2 drunk and it’s this early and I had to call quits on the party early because of work tomorrow.

DAMMIT!

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
