Happy Birthday, Charles Darwin

February 12th is Darwin Day, and the old man would've turned 200 today. The fact of evolution by natural selection is the single most profoundly important -- yet astonishingly and elegantly simple -- scientific discovery ever made, and today (and every day) we celebrate that discovery and the man who made it some 170 years ago. Happy Birthday, Charles.

But, clearly, you don’t live in the South.

Darwin AND Abe Lincoln on the same day? A sacrilege I tells ya!

Bob Jones must be rolling over in his grave.

Evolutionism

We live in an evolution-crazed world. We are told that everything we see—stars, galaxies, planets, and living organisms, including man himself—has evolved spontaneously out of primordial self-existent matter, is still evolving, and will continue to evolve in the future. This in essence is the view called atheistic evolution. Such fanciful theorizing is both unscriptural and unscientific. The compromise position known as theistic evolution represents no improvement, however, for it likewise contradicts the Word of God. Furthermore, it is thoroughly inconsistent, for it represents a welding together of two diametrically opposed world views.

The vast majority here know that I don't like The Simpsons

But I’ll have to admit, that little clip is fantastic.

Begs the question: Have we fully evolved? Is there a point in which we begin to devolve? To wit:

From a human perspective . . .

cultural evolution, in particular the acceptance of the the Theory of Evolution, can be painfully slow. Article in the WaPo today that includes a poll result indicating that 41% of the population believed man, homo sapiens, are not the product of evolution. A tribute to Darwin, from an eloquent (and Hot!) proponent of evolution, and one of my favorite columnists, Olivia Judson.

Gallup Poll even more depressing.

Only 40% of Americans believe in evolution. The rest are either unsure (borderline morons) or creationists (total morons). All of which is neatly predicted by my first law of human behavior: people are stupid.

You mean the guy who said:

“The Bible never says anything about dinosaurs. You can’t say there were dinosaurs when you never saw them. Somebody actually saw Adam and Eve. No one ever saw a Tyrannosaurus rex.”

That guy?

btw

there’s shockingly few pictures of him as either a Met or a Red Sock(?), and none of them make it clear enough that it’s actually Carl Everett. I went with the one of him as a Duck b/c of the way he’s pointing to the sky with his eyes closed. I felt it was poignant.

Today is also Lincoln's Birthday!

The Simpsons made a good point about Lincoln’s Birthday too -

Homer: If I was governor, I’d sure find better things to do with my time.
Marge: Like what?
Homer: Like getting Washington’s Birthday and Lincoln’s Birthday back as separate paid holidays. President’s Day? What a rip-off! I bust my butt day in and day out—
Marge: You’re late for work, Homer.
Homer: So? Someone’ll punch in for me.

Cheney

Also – today is the third anniversary of the day that Dick Cheney shot a 76 year old man in the face. Not everyone is fully evolved.

that's not fair

it’s not fair to make fun of someone for not being fully evolved when it’s so painfully obvious that he’s not actually a human being.

Loved the Darwin Exhibit

Loved the Darwin Exhibit at the Natural History Museum a couple years ago. Great details about his upbringing and the historic voyage.

Lustful evolution -

As I sit here listening to sports talk radio and preparing my spring vacation I just saw this buxom beauty outside my apartment window trudge to her car. Let me paint the picture as to how I, as a man, am evolving:

1. She is tall, in shape, curvaceous, wearing a wife beater and some tight workout pants. This makes me, a man, interested and curious.

2. She refuses to tie her shoes, laces a gaggle and she is walking in a goose step fashion similar to that of the Russian Army. She is half wearing a puffy coat. Apparently in the attempt to be fashionable, however at the same time too lazy to don the coat in its entirety – perhaps trying to keep up w/the the similar trend of guys not pulling their pants up above their a$$ cracks. This makes me, as a man, less attracted to her.

3. She has climbed into her car and hastily thrown her purse and some other items into the back seat. Apparently she is just another person with too many material items that she takes for granted. This makes me, a man, less attracted to her because of her utter disregard of how good she has it compared to others.

4. Ah!…What’s this? Look at her now. She has stepped out of her car and gone to the trunk of the car to retrieve?…A different t-shirt. Now, she is trying to change from the wife beater to a normal (tight) t-shirt in broad day light. Yep, there she is, looking around to see if anyone is watching (noticing) her. Apparently, she hasn’t evolved to the stage in which it’s normal (and accepted) to change clothing within a domicile that provides privacy. This makes me, as a man, completely turned off because she is either changing outdoors as if to say: “Look at me and my purchased a$$ets” or “I don’t care about civility and I’m too lazy to walk back to my apartment and change.”

Yes. “I” have evolved. Or…Maybe I’ve just become a prude.

I'm doing a little study on the NL East and thought I'd share an interesting little tidbit. To all of the self-loathing Mets fans/lazy 'MLB insiders' and journalistic parrots who have 1) Condemned the entire Mets organization as a joke 2) Written off this core's impressive run to date and 3) Deified the Phillies as unstoppable juggernauts w/ no chance to lose this division:

Yes, those wins are weighted towards '06-'07 and yes, the Phillies' are more recent but the fact remains that no other team in that span can even come close to the Mets total of days in first place, which should be garnering a lot more respect than it has. If only because we still have nearly the same core in place that has clearly had a lot of success and health-willing can very easily do so again in 2010.
