Real, actual baseball news from Mets camp
Quoting Ben Shpigel: Another Mets pitcher, J.J. Putz, has been throwing for a few week, and he had his first session this morning with his new catcher, Brian Schneider. With the pitching coach Dan Warthen watching, Putz threw about 40 pitches, including a few that had some of the nastiest spin I’ve ever seen. The bullpen catcher Dave Racaniello was kneeling a few steps away from Schneider, and he said it was a splitter — "a really, really good one."

That's all well and good...
but is Putz in the best shape of his life? That’s the only spring training news I care about.

That's a great link
But, hey, it’s nice to have actual baseball news again.

I heard an update the other day...
that ibanez now has the body of a 14 year old, and is starting to grow hair in “funny places”
He should be major league ready in 9 years.

He had the body of a 25-year-old only a few months ago
Is Ibanez going all Benjamin Button on the Phillies?

Started my new season of MLB 2k8
I made most of the major offseason transactions around the league, and just about all the ones for the Mets. Santana threw 7 one-hit innings, so I decided to bring in our new murderer’s row out of the bullpen for the 8th and 9th to close it down. Putz gave up 2 runs before getting an out, letting the Marlins tie the game. I ended up winning in extra-innings, (Jose Reyes triple, scores on sac fly ftw) – but, needless to say, that fake 8th inning was giving me flashbacks to last year. Oy vey…
That said, I’m pretty darn excited for the real-life version of Putz and KRod. Good to hear that Putz has been down there throwing for a few weeks now – sounds like he’s embraced his new role. I was a little worried that he’d be pissed about not being a closer.
I've never played a baseball game so I don't know how they rate players
But I imagine Putz’s ratings have to be pretty low after last season.
it's actually last years game though
so it’s based on his ’07 season. His ratings are pretty good, though not as good as I was expecting, which is actually good b/c it probably will be more realistic to his skill set now.
in 2k8
does the computer make an unbelievable amount of catches on would-be homers against you? I’ve had the game about a month and a half (yes, I’m cheap, I bought last years version), and I’m at about 2.5 robbed homers a game. It’s gotten real annoying and I find myself yelling at computer jon miller and joe morgan (even though I actually… gasp… like them in real life).

yea
I’m not a huge fan of the overall gameplay. The fielding mechanics are awful, and unless you really tweak the sliders, the computer does NOT throw balls – I try to be patient and take walks, but it just doesn’t happen. I still think the EA Sports MVP series was by far the best graphical baseball game – it just felt the most like real baseball. I hate these stupid licensing agreements. That said, I love baseball and I love baseball video games, so I put up with the flaws, b/c it’s still a fun game.
Oh, and I’m cheap too – I bought the game last October, and was actually gonna buy 2k7, but 2k8 was pretty cheap at that point. I couldn’t stand watching the Phillies in the playoffs, so I decided to buy the game and play the playoffs with the Mets in instead of the Phillies. It was way better than the real thing.
Agreed.
2k8 is horrid.
"But it's not over yet, everybody thinks it over, but if we can just get the Earth to reverse rotation...this thing can be played again. So there you go, New York Mets......motherf*ckers." - Jon Stewart
The Show is exclusive for PS3?
Contemplating a system upgrade, and checking on exclusive titles. Hate to be stuck with a crappy MLB game in exchange for having HALO.

I'm still playing NCAA football with a mini Sony PS2 that I bought in Hawaii back in early '05.
Damned economy!

I'm still playing Madden 05.
And NCAA 05, too. Not so much cheap, I just like to get a lot of playing time out of my games.

NCAA Football 99 here
for the PS1. It’s been a few years since I bought a new video game thingy.

Bob
I’m not going to admit how many hours I’ve dedicated to: NCAA 06, 07, 08, 09. Let’s just say its disgustingly obscene.

I still play
NCAA 04 and Madden 04 from time-to-time. My sophomore year of college, my roomates and I had dynasties going in both games, and we’d import the draft classes from NCAA to Madden. We played out the complete seasons for like 3 or 4 seasons, then simmed the seasons and would only play if our teams were in the playoffs/bowl games. We were obsessed – we did so many seasons, all the real-life players were retired by the time we stopped playing it.
When I was stationed in Hawaii I had the fellas over for a sick tournament.
I got eight of my friends who played NCAA ’06 (PS2) and had them select pieces of paper (marked 1 through 8) out of a hat to determine the pick of their favorite team on the game.
We had my big screen t.v. and a small 15’’ flat screen t.v. on the dining room table set up, each with a PS2. I ordered pizza and wings and had some beer in the fridge. So there we were, 8 grown adults playing on two separate t.v.’s w/two separate systems, hollering, laughing, cussing, oooing and ahhing. The place was like a damned sports bar. We started @ 10 am and ended a 8pm.
I lost in the championship game because the big Hawaiian’s cousin kept telling the big Hawaiian what defensive play I was using to stop his bread and butter play. S.O.B.!
Afterward we were completely wiped out. Dead tired.

Semi random
But I was just reading previews for 2k9 and for the show and apparently 2k9 will include baseball prospectus stats. I was planning on getting the show if I got any game but I might have to change my mind.
I think that is easily negated by
having Steve Phillips as your broadcaster not to mention the animations and glitches in mlb 2k9 are unnatural and horrid.
Actually same here
except the Show has Road to the Show mode where you create a player and only control him, being placed into plays only he is involved, pretty fun creating Neise and only pitching his starts and such, suffice it to say, I’ve been playing more games with this mode.
that mode sounds so awesome
I played it on my PS2, but obviously it wasn’t the same as playing on a next-gen system. I’m pissed they don’t release that for Xbox. What pisses me off the most though is that EA got frozen out of the MLB market – I know it’s their own fault, since they were the ones who started the whole exclusive thing with Madden, and I know EA has gotten lazy at times, but their last 2 MVP Baseball games for PS2 before losing the MLB license were the two best graphical baseball video games I’ve ever played.
By the way, how sick would it be if one of the companies that makes these games hooked up with the guys behind Diamond Mind or Out of the Park Baseball, to make a game that has a great stats engine for the franchise mode, but that also has great graphics? Kinda like Front Page Sports for a new generation.
